CORNELIA THOMAS FULLINWIDER

April 23, 1957

Mrs. Cornelia Thomas Fullinwider, whose long life had exemplified an abundance of gentle service to neighbors and friends, a leadership in cultural and civic affairs and an intelligent appreciation of all that went on about her, died at 11:45 o'clock last night at her home at 530 College avenue.

She was 86 years old last April 7.  Her husband, Dr. Cassius Henry Fullinwider, a Mt. Vernon physician of wide reputation, died Oct. 11, 1940, his passing severing marital bonds of 43 years.

Mrs. Fullinwider possessed a pioneer heritage that was reflected always in her solid, sound appreciation of community progress and growth.

Her father was Enoch Elijah Thomas, a top-ranking Posey county Democratic leader, whose successful business career included operation of the first steam mill in Mt. Vernon, the Mt. Vernon wharfboat in the former heyday of river traffic, steamboating and in alter years a coal yard at Mill and West Second streets.  His political service was rendered officially as Posey county recorder, Posey county sheriff, mayor of Mt. Vernon and a member of the city's Common Council.  The deceased's mother was Anne Weever, a member of a Southern Indiana family that included men of professional distinction.  Her paternal grandfather George Washington Thomas, superintended the building of the present Posey county court house.

Illness of a year of a heart condition that had resulted in several periods of hospitalization and two months of serious illness preceded Mrs. Fullinwider's death.  But physical ailment did not dim her alert mind or cultural pursuits.

The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home where friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday.  The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Weisinger chapel.  The body will be cremated and the ashes interred later in Bellefontaine cemetery.  The family request is for no floral offerings.

Two daughters survive -  Miss Anne V. Fullinwider, Mt. Vernon and Mrs. W. R. Barr, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mrs. Fullinwider at her death was the oldest member in years of membership of First Presbyterian Church.  She was a member also of the Martha Hunter Guild of the church.

A member of one of the early graduating classes of Mt. Vernon High school, she chose school teaching as her career and taught in rural and Mt. Vernon schools, riding on horseback to teach at her rural charges.  She was a Mt. Vernon teacher at the time of her marriage.

Reading was one of her most enjoyed diversions and she was a poet in her own right, much of her writing reflecting the keen sense of humor that was so evident in her conversation.
