JOHN DOYLE

April 20, 1956

John Doyle, 88, whose lifetime home was 423 W. Seventh street in Mt. Vernon until his removal to a nursing home a few days ago, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday (19 Apr 1956) in Welborn Memorial Baptist Hospital in Evansville.

Mr. Doyle fell and fractured his hip at the Frazier Nursing Home in Cynthiana two days after he became a patient there after four years' illness at his home.  He was moved to the hospital from the nursing home.

The aged bachelor and his companion and sister, Miss Viola Doyle, 86, were born in the West Seventh street dwelling.

The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home where friends may call after 5 o'clock this afternoon.

William E. Stark, lay vicar of St. John's Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a member, will conduct the funeral service in Weisinger chapel at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Mt. Vernon lodge No. 49, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which the deceased was the oldest member will conduct graveside rites.

The sister, a nephew, Parking Meter Patrolman William Rairdon, Mt. Vernon, and a great nephew, Clarence Rairdon, Evansville, are the surviving relatives.

The deceased, who was of English parentage, was a picturesque character who exemplified in appearance and actions English traditions of solid, conservative convictions.  His parents were John Doyle, and Isabelle Cunningham Doyle, both natives of England.  The father served in the United States navy in the Civil War and purchased the Mt. Vernon dwelling following his military service.

As a youth the late deceased was a cooper.  For many years he was a Western Union lineman and worked in many parts of the country.  In later years he was custodian of the independent Order of Odd Fellows building in Mt. Vernon.
