Death Comes To Ex-Local Woman

Mrs. Matilda Fisher Deig, 84, former Mt. Vernon resident and the widow of John A. Deig prominent Posey County farmer died Saturday (20 Mar 1954) at the Kueber Nursing Home in Evansville.

 

Mrs. Deig died in 1941 and his widow had resided at 910 First avenue, Evansville near the home of her son, Sylvester S. Deig, Evansville accountant, until four weeks ago when she entered the nursing home.

 

Mrs. Deig, a very devout member of the Roman Catholic Church, transferred her membership from St. Matthew's Church in Mt. Vernon to St. Anthony's Church in Evansville following her moving to Evansville from Mt. Vernon.

 

Requiem High Mass will be conducted at 8 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Church.  The body will be brought to St. Matthew's cemetery at Mt. Vernon following the church service for burial alongside the husband's grave.  If weather conditions permit, the casket will be opened at the grave prior to interment, Father Raymond B. Smith, pastor of St. Matthew's Church, will conduct the burial services.  The Altar Society of St. Anthony's Church will conduct a memorial service at the Ziemer Funeral Home chapel in Evansville at 7:30 o'clock this evening.

 

Surviving in addition to the accountant son in Evansville, are another son, Francis Deig, athletic director at St. Thomas Military Academy at St. Paul, Minn; four grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Fischer, St. Philips and a sister, Miss Lillian Fischer, Evansville.

 

Mrs. Deig was a native of St. Philips vicinity, a daughter of Valentine Fischer and Barbara Zellner Fischer, representatives of two prominent, early Marrs township familes.

 

The Deig family resided for many years on North Main street in Mt. Vernon.
