DANIEL A CROWDER

Daniel. Crowder, 82, a retired stead engineer employed at local mills and the Mt. Vernon Water Works Co., for half a century, died at 10:45 o'clock this morning at his home at 702 College avenue.

For a period of 17 years, from 1938 to 1955, he was the official weather and river observer of the U.S. Weather Bureau at Mt. Vernon.

He was an ardent Democrat and the oldest member of Mt. Vernon lodge, No. 49, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

The deceased had been in failing health for several years and last November suffered the first of a series of paralytic strokes.  The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home and funeral arrangement were incomplete early this afternoon. (Burial was in the Bellefontaine Cemetery.)

Mr. Crowder was a member of Missionary Baptist Church at Herrin, Ill.  A native of near Carmi, Ill., a son of Daniel Crowder and Nancy Cozart Crowder, he came to Mt. Vernon as a young man and had resided here since.

Nearest survivors are the wife, nee Nola ?Egler; a son by a former marriage, Eugene Crowder, Henderson, Ky; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild and a brother, Melvin Crowder, Mt. Vernon.

From 1904 to 1920 Mr. Crowder was engineer and repairman at the plant of the former Mt. Vernon Straw Board Co.

Following a year's employment as a pumpman with Missouri Valley Bridge co., he became chief engineer of Mt. Vernon Milling Co., plant, a position he held until he became chief engineer of the Mt. Vernon Water Works, in 1931.

Failing health caused his retirement in 1953.
