Mrs. Barbara Strahle Bernd 88, a native
of Baden Germany and a respected resident of the Mt. Vernon community for 68 years, died at 12 o'clock noon Sunday (30 Jan 1955) at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She was the widow of George
Bernd, a well known local farmer, who died in 1941.
Mrs. Bernd, a semi-invalid and then an invalid for the last 15
years and confined to her room for over eight years, entered the hospital
Saturday from her home on the West Fourth street road on Rural Route 4. Her
condition had been serious for the last two weeks.
The body is at the Short-Niehaus Funeral
Home and will remain there through the funeral service set for 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Short-Niehaus
chapel. Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery. Rev. August E.
Binder, pastor of Trinity Evangelical and reformed Church of which the deceased
was a member, will be officiating clergyman.
Surviving are two sons, Henry C. Bernd, Mt. Vernon, four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Black, Mt. Vernon, Mrs. J. J. Sherlock and Mrs. H. A.
Fleming, Evansville, and Mrs. Wilbur Galdwin,
New Harmony; six grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
Mrs. Bernd, a daughter of Christian and Elizabeth Strahle came to America from her native Baden as a young woman. Her marriage to Mt. Bernd took place in 1892.
