John Conrad Schmitzer, 90, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Mt. Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mt. Vernon.

He was born February 1, 1923 in Posey County, IN to Godfrey and Margaret (Ziegler) Schmitzer.

John was a 1941 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. He had farmed with his father and later his sons and retired in 1998 after 65 years. John was a past president of Farm Bureau Inc., he served one term as a County Commissioner, and served three terms as a County Councilman. He had been a 4-H Leader and had served on the 4-H council; he had also served as a trustee for Black Township Advisory Board, and was a lifetime member with Odd Fellows Lodge and Trinity United Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary (Price) Schmitzer;

John is survived by three sons, Gary Sr. (Marilyn) Schmitzer, Robert (Vickie) Schmitzer, and David (Laura) Schmitzer; two sisters, Wilma (Glen) Jacobs and Martha Brandt; and 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Schneider Funeral Home 512 Main St. in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Cynthia Priem officiating and burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the funeral home.
