Rister was fatally burned last Saturday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Hunter, east of New Harmony. At the time of the accident, Mrs. Rister was the only occupant of the house, with the exception of a small grandson, the other members of the family being at church. She was standing in front of a large fire place when she noticed that her skirts were also aflame. Before she could tear her clothing away the flames had enveloped her body and frantic with fear she ran through the house which had the effect of causing the flames to burn swifter. The young boy acted with great presence of mind and tried to drown out the flames with a bucket of water but his grandmother's motions rendered aid inaffective. By this time the fire had full possession of the victim's garments and as they burned loose fell to the floor where they were consumed. (New Harmony Times 6 January 1922) |

OBITUARY DEATH OF A FRIEND It is with profound regret that we chronicle the death at 8:30 o'clock of Miss Mary Streamer, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Streamer, and a prominent young lady of this community. The deceased was 18 years 22 days of age, and Mary was a good and kind hearted girl. She had many friends and was loved by all who knew her. Mary leaves a father, mother, three sisters and four brothers to mourn her departure. Mary's girl friends were the pall bearers. They were Misses Eva Wiley, Carrie Hein, Edith Baker, Anna Blaylock, Nellie Walker and Lizzie Hein. The funeral took place at Bethlehem church on Saturday, April 6, at 11 0'clock, Rev. A. A. Shoultz conducting the services. The remains were laid to rest in the Bethlehem cemetery. |
