the loving family of Lynden Lester Land and Susie
Lanie Emmons
Land.
She had an older brother, Lester, who preceded her in death, and two
younger sisters, Mildred (David Merkel) and Nancy Sue (Frank Hobson).
In addition to her immediate family, her aunt Nellie Crowe’s family
played an important part of her development. There were always special
Thanksgiving and Easter dinners shared between the two families and
many Sunday afternoons were spent together. Many happy times were also
spent with cousins from the Land family. Irene graduated from West
Baden High School Class of 1951 and she spent her entire life in French
Lick. She was married to Kenneth "Kenny" Walters and
they had two children, Cheryl (Chuck) Quinn and Kevin (Terri) Walters.
She also had two grandsons, Brycen (Dena) and Yancey (Jenni) and she
was totally devoted to them
as they grew up. The family enjoyed traveling and visited most of the United States and parts of Canada. A highlight was a visit to
the World’s Fair when it was held in Montreal, Canada. Other special trips were
those to Florida
and the Keys where they enjoyed fishing. She devoted her entire life to her family and
friends. The loving relationship with her two sisters was a source of joy as well as
support for each of them as they shared life experiences. Many high school friends were
important to her and she maintained contact with them. Some of these friends continued to call her throughout her illness.
She helped run the family business until she became too ill to do so.
Irene had
many talents. She not only had the gift of painting, but also was an
excellent floral designer and used that gift when the family had a
floral business. She
designed flowers for many weddings and other special occasions. She was
also musically gifted and played the piano and organ and she played the
piano for
her church.
Irene became a Christian at an early age and was committed throughout
her life.
She was active in the Springs Valley Christian Church and could always
be
counted on to help cook and serve dinners, clean the church or be sure
it had just the
right decorations to make it an attractive place for the services. Her
church family played an important role in her life. She learned early
