Funeral services were held at the Church of the Nazarene at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday for George Sherman Hendricks, 67, who died at 10:30 o'clock Sunday morning at his home on north Meridian road, about a half mile from Mitchell, from the result of carbolic acid which he drank a short time earlier.  The services were conducted by the Rev. C.L. Thornburg, pastor of the church.  Funeral arrangements were handled by Haverly mortuary.  Burial was in the Liberty Christian church cemetery, Orange county.

Mr. Hendricks, who was a native of DuBois county, moved here about 15 years ago from near French Lick, and had been regularly employed at the Lehigh lime plant.  No motive for his act in taking his own life is known, his only explanation being that he was "tired of living."

Survivors are the wife, a son, Otto Hendricks of Mitchell, one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bryan of

Indianapolis; three brothers,  William Hendricks of Bedford, Martin Hendricks of West Baden, and Cutler Hendricks of Washington Ind.,  one sister, Mrs. Sarah Hall of near Bryantsville; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, one of whom was born Sunday night.

Lt. Clifford Hendrickson

Bodies Of Two War II Veterans Are Returned

The caskets bearing the bodies of two servicemen from this area who lost their lives in the European Theatre of war arrived in Huntingburg by train at 11:05 this morning.

Second Lt. Clifford Hendrickson, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hendrickson, Route 1, Jasper, was killed when the bomber he was piloting home from Germany crashed  in England, ten miles from it's base, on December 23, 1944.

The other casualty returned to Huntingburg this morning is Pfc Alvin A. Vaal, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Vaal of St. Meinrad.  He was killed after taking part in the invasion of Southern France when struck by a small piece of shrapnel, which pierced his heart.

Lt. Cliff Hendrickson

Lt. Clifford Hendrickson was born at Vincennes on October 4, 1917.  The family later moved to Jasper when he was six, and here he attended the public schools and high school.  Following his graduation from J.H.S. in 1935, he went to work for the Hoosier Desk Co.  At 19 he enlisted in the Marines.

After serving for about a year in the Philippines he returned to Jasper and took a job at the Jasper Office Furniture Co.  At the same time, he took flying lessons at the Huntingburg Airport, receiving a flying license in January, 1940.

In the fall of 1941, convinced that America could not stay out of the war, he decided to join the British Royal Air Force.  He went to Canada, and on October 1, 1941, enlisted in the R.A.F.  On his birthday, Oct 4, he boarded a ship for England, where he was assigned to the Polish division of the R.A.F.

After America entered the war the following December, he applied for a transfer to the U.S. Air Forces.

The request was granted, and he returned to Canada where he was demobilized on May 13, 1942.  On the same day he went to Detroit and applied for enlistment as a cadet in the U.S. Army Corps and was accepted.  He then trained at about 17 bases in the U.S. and was commissioned a second lieutenant. In August 1944, he sailed for England.

It was while piloting a bomber home from Germany that Cliff Hendrickson was killed.  According to information provided his parents by the only surviving crew member, the plane was badly shot up while dropping aluminum foil over Berlin to interfere with the German radar.

The plane stopped at Brussels for five days for repairs, and according to the surviving crewman the altimeter was 500 feet off the correct reading when the plane resumed its flight.  The plane was flying through a dense fog at night when it crashed ten miles from its base, killing eight of the nine crew members.

Surviving Lt. Hendrickson are his parents  and two sisters, Mrs. Clarita Messmer and Mrs.Wm. Horney.

His body was taken to the chapel of the Becher & Son Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel at 2 P.M. Thursday, with Rev. Cail E Kircher of the First Presbyterian church officiating.  Interment will be in Shiloh cemetery.  Graveside rites will be conducted by members of Post 147, American Legion.

TWO YEAR OLD CHILD DROWNS IN OPEN SPRING

Tot Playing With Other Children Tumbles Into Spring and Drowned Before the Mother Can Rescue Him

(Special to The Commercial)

Verne, Ind., July 10 - Tragedy entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hendrickson, living near Fritchton, on Friday evening at 7 o'clock when their two-year-old son, Woodrow Wilson Hendrickson, while playing in the yard with his brothers and sisters toppled over into an open spring near the house and was drowned.

The other children, all small tots, were too frightened when they saw Woodrow fall into the spring, to attempt to rescue him, but ran crying to the house to tell the mother of the little brother's sad plight.  Mrs. Hendrickson ran down to the spring and pulled the lifeless body from the water.  Frantic with grief she called for a physician hoping against hope that there might be a little spark of life still lingering to be fanned into a living flame, but the words of the doctor shattered all hope.  Woodrow was dead - had been dead when his body was pulled from the water.

Through some misunderstanding the coroner failed to arrive until 11 o'clock today.  The undertaker had not been here, waiting for the arrival of the coroner.  The little body was then prepared for burial.

Funeral services will be conducted from Lower Indiana church on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. Caldwell.  Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Surviving besides the parents are two brothers, Arthur William and Oscar Richard Hendrickson, and three sisters, Dorothy Aileen, Catherine Eleanor and Carrie Jane Hendrickson.

Little Boy Killed Under Steamroller

Lad Made No Outcry (The Shoals News)

James Purcell, the 6 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Purcell was fatally crushed at Sixth and Central avenue by being run over by a 5,000 pound steam roller, almost in front of the home of his parents on Sixth street. The child, though crushed from the feet to the waist, made no outcry. He died at St. Joseph's hospital, and to his parents, as he was dying, he kept trying to explain that "I couldn't get out of the way of the old thing." The lad was caught while trying to jump off in front of the roller, which was moving along at the rate of about one and one half miles an hour, according to the owner, Fred Gerdes. Gerdes had been using the steam roller to roll down a job of paving at St. Patrick's church, and was on his way home up Central avenue. He had gone just two blocks when the fatal accident occurred. Mr. Gerdes was driving the steam roller along and he says that he did not see the little boy who had leaped on the front part of the roller frame and was riding along. The lad jumped off and fell as he jumped. Bystanders who witnessed the accident said that he scrambled along in the path of the roller on hands and feet, trying to get out of the way. The machine was making such a racket as it progressed, Gerdes could not hear the shouts of warning, if any were uttered in time. It was only after the child had been caught, Gerdes said, he was warned by a little boy that the child was being crushed to death forward under his steam roller. He stopped the machine, backed it up, and the child was tenderly picked up and borne to the hospital two blocks away. Dr. J. N. Shaff said that although the child was crushed from the feet to the waistline under the roller, when the surgeon arrived there was not any visible evidence of the crushing in so far as there might be flattened flesh and muscles. The tenacious character of the child's bones and muscles was shown by the fact that they very soon resumed their normal shape. However, the child's internal organs had been fatally injured by the crushing process, and the lad succumbed to his injuries in the hospital one hour after he was hurt. He astonished everybody by retaining consciousness up to the last minute, and he talked to his parents up to the last.
