AGAN, Harold "Hoover", 66, died Monday in Naples, Fla. He was retired owner of Agan's Market, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of French Lick Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 76. Survivors: his wife, the former Jewell Toliver; two daughters, Jo Lynn Agan of Floyds Knobs and Dara Foxx; two sons, Jeff Agan of Floyds Knobs and Kim Agan of San Diego; a brother, Claude Agan of Haines City, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. AGAN, James, "James Agan, the oldest son of a family of 13 children of Milton and Celia Agan, was born November 16, 1851 and died December 23, 1946 at the age of 94 years, one month and 7 days. On January 8, 1876, he married Celia Childers. To this union were born five children, John, William, Lizzie, Ben and Emma, two of which survive him; John of Chariton, Iowa, and Mrs. Emma Trinkle of Marengo, with whom he has made his home for the last 26 years. He is also survived by seven grand- children and 14 great grandchildren. Mr. Agan united with the Primitive Baptist Church near Hardinsburg when a boy in his teens and has lived a Christain life these many years. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Agan was born near Valeen, Ind., on the 25th day of November, 1834, and lived in that vicinity until the death of his wife 16 years ago. Since that time he has been with his children in Iowa, Oklahoma and Colorado. He died December 27, 1924, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Jones of near Columbia, at the age of 90 years, 1 month and two days. He was married to Letitia M. Stewart on January 20, 1859 and 10 children were born to them: Dr. G.M. Agan of Glenwood, Iowa; A.G. Agan of Columbia; Dr. J.N. Agan of Pierce, Colorado; Emma F. Agan, deceased; Sally C. Agan, deceased; Samuel S. Agan of Custer, Oklahoma; Mary J. Vandeever of Purdy, Iowa; Charles E. Agan, residence unknown; William E. Agan, of Glenwood; Dora A. Jones, of Columbia; 24 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and one brother, Frank Agan of Valeene. Early in life he united with the M.E. church andretained membership in the same until the end of his life, and was interested in the success of the church. In his last illness he expressed his faith and trust in Jesus and his willingness to go to his God. Funeral services were held at the Oakdale church, cunducted by Rev. Holliday of Columbia. Gilliatt,son of Leroy and Elsie Gilliatt, was born near Newton Stewart, March 15, 1870 and died August 15, 1941, aged 71 years and 5 months. He and his twin sister, Eva, were the seventh of a family of 14 children. Mrs. Eva Kimble passed away this year, May 10, and now only three of the family remain; two brothers, Will Gilliatt, of Taswell, and Alonzo Gilliatt, of French Lick, and one sister, Mrs. Alice Taylor, also of French Lick. At the early age of 14 he was converted and joined the Methodist church at Wesley Chapel. Later he changed his membership to Fairview. On October 10, 1895, he married Sarah Jane Parks, of Newton Stewart. To this union six children were born; Roy Gilliatt, of this community; Mrs. Maude Deich, of Elizabeth; Mrs. May Deich, of New Albany; Mrs. Lura Apple, of English; and Mrs. Verda Hammond. The family ties were broken after 12 years, for on March 17, 1908, the mother was called away, and then on December 11, 1929, Verda was taken.On May 9, 1915, he married Eliza Eastridge, who died February 3, 1941. He leaves his five children, one step-son, 24 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. From Linda Lockhart. GOBBEL, Fred R. "FREDERICK RODOLPHUS GOBBEL, son of Dr. Frederick and Hannah Gobbel, was born in Orange County, September 25, 1857. He died May 17, 1942, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 22 days. Moving to Grantsburg, Indiana, where he began the practice of medicine about 65 years ago, he married Jane Benham, of that vicinity, on July 6, 1878. To them were born three children, Dr. J.F. (Wheeler) Gobbel, who died January 15, 1928; Mrs. Effie Rust, who died January 26, 1938; and Dr. N.E. Gobbel, who survives. His wife died on May 28, 1933. Dr. Gobbel was a graduate of the Kentucky School of Medicine in Louisville. Moving from Grantsburg to English in 1896, he continued the practice of medicine until his retirement three years ago. He was president of the Crawford County Medical Society, a Southern Railway surgeon for 35 years, and president of the English State Bank at the time of his death. During World War I he was Selective Service medical examiner for the county. Dr. Gobbel was a member of the English Presbyterian church and the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias lodges. He was a thirty-second-degree Mason, a Shriner and a Knight Templar. Surviving are his son, Dr. Novy E. Gobbel, of English; a brother, Orval Gobbel, of Detroit; a sister, Mrs. Ed Wells, of Birdseye; two granddaughters, Mrs. Flete Middleworth, of Gary, and Mrs. Comal Reisen, of Indianapolis; a great grandson, Robert Lee Reisen and two cousins, Drs. Valeene, Indiana, September 21, 1824. He was
the 4th son of a family of nine children and was
the last one of this family to pass over the river
of death. His father and mother died when he
was but a young man and in coming years the
family was taken away one by one until a few
years ago there was just one brother left, William,
who lived at the old home place. They were a great
comfort to each other and they spent many
pleasant hours together and after this brother was
gone, Uncle Levi, as we all called him, often spoke
about himself being the last leaf on the tree and

MCINTOSH, GEORGE - MARENGO----George McIntosh, 71, retired merchant of Orleans, who for a number of years conducted a store at Valeene, before going to Orleans and who was well known in Marengo, died Friday, December 15, 1939, at his home near Orleans, after several weeks of illness. After retiring from business Mr. McIntosh engaged in farming. Surviving are the widow; two children, Mrs. Lelah Johnson and Glenn McIntosh, both of Orleans; four brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Orleans, conducted by the Rev. Perry Key, pastor of the United Brethren church at French Lick, with burial in the Orleans Cemetery. APPLE, MARY GRIMES - ETHEL----Mary Susan Grimes, one of nine children, was born to Abraham and Sarah Pruett Grimes on July 5, 1873. She died on August 5, 1949, at the age of 76, at her home after a long illness. She lived her entire life on the home farm, although not in the same dwelling. On March 16, 1892, she was married to Joshua Apple. To this union five children were born. A daughter, Dorothy, died in infancy. Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Mrs. Thomas Parks, of Newton Stewart; Everett Apple, at home; Mrs. Lola Byrd, of Tell City, and Lowell Apple, of Chicago; 14 grandchildren, and a twin brother, John L. Grimes. In her girlhood, she united with the Christian Church and was baptized. After her marriage she transferred her membership to the United Brethren Church. CHRISTIAN PETER LEATHERMAN was born at Dayton, Ohio, July 10, 1814.
When he was four years of age his parents removed to Orange county,
Indiana, where on Oct. 20, 1836, he married Elizabeth Krutsinger, with
whom he traveled life's journey for a period of sixty-one years, four
months and twenty-eight days. Twelve children -- seven sons and five
daughters--blest this union, three of whom, two boys and one girl, died in
infancy. One daughter, aged twelve, died in 1860, since which,
thirty-eight years ago, there has been no death in the immediate family
until now. Mr. Leatherman professed faith in Christ in 1857, under the
pastorate of Rev. Hiram Warner in Gentry County, MO., and united with the
Christian church, and for forty-one years in sickness, in health and in
all the recessitudes of life he beautifully exemplified the eminent
practicability of the religion of out Lord Jesus Christ. All through his
illness, which continued through a period of eight months, and during
which time he was confined to his room and most of the time to his bed; he
was patient and wholly resigned to the will of God and when the end came,
on March 18th, 1898, he passed triumphantly to his reward, at the ripe age
of 83 years, 8 months, 8 days. Seven of eight children were present,
[the] oldest of whom is past sixty [years] old, and the youngest thi
[.......] The bereaved widow on [.........] her husband's death was 70
[years] [...] months and 11 days old. The aggregate age of his eight
children on that day was 383 years, 7 months and 1 day. The average age
of the eight children was 47 years, 11 months and 12 days, including the
parents it was 54 years, 4 months and 9 days. Thus the whole family have
in aggregate lived a period of time equal in duration to about five and
one-half centuries. Two of the girls and three of the boys reside in
Illinois, one girl and one boy in Missouri, and one boy in Kansas. The
funeral services were conducted by Elder Wm. T. Gordon from the Christian
church at Edgewood, Ill., and the reamins interred in the Edgewood
cemetery on Sunday, March 20th, 1898.
WELLMAN, JOHN ROBERT-----FARGO----John Robert Wellman, son of Catherine Grimes and Clark Wellman, was born August 14, 1869 and died August 10, 1949, at the age of 79 years. In 1910, he married Martha Roll and to this union five children were born. Those who preceded him in death were two brothers, Dutch and Samuel Wellman, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah McMickle and Mrs. Elizabeth Standiford. Survbivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lula Haycox, of Milltown; Mrs. Gladys Longest, of Louisville, and Mrs. Jewell Eastridge, of English; two sons, Russell Wellman, of English and Cpl. Lovell Wellman, U.S. Army, Ft. Eustis, Va.; a brother, James Wellman, of Bloomington and ten grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Providence Church Friday, with Leonard Cummins, of English, in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery. From Linda Lockhart. JONES, JERRY---Jerry Jones was the son of Henry and Eliza Ann Poe Jones and was born in Southeast Township, Orange County, March 23, 1870, and departed this life in the early morn of May 2, 1949, at the age of 79 years. He spent practically all his life in this locality and in near-by Washington and Crawford Counties. Here he completed his grade school studies and attended the Marengo Academy for his advanced school days, choosing to remain a farmer much of his life. He was well versed in vocal music, loved the hymns of praise, and at many periods in his life conducted and carried a part in the olden times "Singing School," and in church affairs through life. In May, 1892, he married Miss Cora Etta Trinkle, of his home vicinity, and into this home were born ten children, nine sons and one daughter and of this family, the companion and mother died February 7, 1947, and three of the children preceded her, namely, Russell, Hazel and one in infancy. Those of the parental family surviving are Elder Ray Jones, now county superintendent of schools of Washington County, Indiana, and residing in Salem; Earl, Escoe and May, now Mrs. May Seacat, all residing near Marengo; Roy, of New Albany; Willie, of Steward, Ill, and Eddie, of Lawrence, Ind. With these are two brothers, Charles, of Marengo, and Edward, of Colfax, Ia.; two sisters, Mrs. Mead Fancher, of Bloomington, Ind., and Mrs. Ella May, of Knoxville, Ia.; twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Union Chapel Church on Thursday, May 5, by the Rev. Cary Albritten, of Salem, assited by Elder E.N. Motsinger, of Pekin. From Linda Lockhart. BOYD, MRS. EMMA ------Emma Cole Boyd was born November 12, 1863. Her early life was spent in Orange County, where she taught school. On March 17, 1886, she was married to Elwood G. Boyd at Paoli, by the Rev. Joe Thomas, a Baptist minister. To this union four children were born, Earl Jesse, Harry Arthur, Mabel Olive and William Elwood. Almost all her life she loved and served the Lord being a very earnest Christian and was a member of the Methodist church in English. Her daughter passed away October 2, 1911, and her husband, June 17, 1929. Harry died in Indianapolis, April 16, 1934. After a long illness of two years, 16 months of which were spent in bed, she came to the end of her earthly pilgrmage on Tuesday evening, January 24, 1939, aged 75 years, 2 months and 13 days. Surviving are two sons, Earl Jesse, of English andWilliam Elwood, of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and two sisters, Cora Kuri, of Chicago, and Alice Leistner, of Indianapolis; also many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the English Methodist church with the Rev. J.C. Gray in charge. Burial was in Paoli. From Linda Lockhart. LUCKETT, WILLIAM L.----FRENCH LICK----William Lawson Luckett, son of David and Martha Luckett, was born on a farm in Henry County, Kentucky, July 24, 1860 and departed this life October 16, 1939, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 24 days. When he was a small boy he moved with his family to Orange County where he spent the greater part of his life. Mr. Luckett was the eldest of nine children, three of whom preceded him in death; Mrs.Mayme Sloan, James L. and Luther. On January 25, 1915, he married Mattie McBurney, of Eckerty. He leaves, besides his widow, one sister and four brothers, Mrs. James Chitwood, of Portland, Ind.; Dr. E.R. Luckett, of Marengo;Tilden N. Luckett, of French Lick; Dr. C.D. Luckett and John H. Luckett, of English. Funeral services were held at French Lick Wednesday afternoon. From Linda Lockhart. MCFARLAND, BENJAMINE THOMAS----Benjamine Thomas McFarand, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth McFarland, was born near Newton Stewart. May 4, 1869 and died suddenly on June 18, 1939, age 70 years. 1 month and 14 days. He was united in marriage to Selana May Smith March 8, 1891. To this union eight children were born, Manford, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Douglas, Nathan and Guilder, of Newton Stewart; Mrs. Mae Newton, of Marion; Mrs. Mary Limp, of English,and Mrs. Maude Brown, of Ethel, with whom he has made his home the last three years. He was preceded in death by his wife and son, Erice. Early in life he was converted and united with the General Baptist church at Newton Stewart, where he remained a faithful member throughout life. He was a faithful member of Newton Stewart Lodge, No. 432, Free and Accepted Masins, where he was regular in attendance and always followed it's teachings.From Linda Lockhart. |
