This bible is owned by Jeanne Gass Stump. I took these pictures when I visited her home in 1999.
Marilyn Baxter MartinThe Bible has a faded signature in the front: " James B. Gass bornd June the 4th day 1848. " It was published in New York by the American Bible Society in 1850.
Between the Old and New Testaments are Family Record pages. The first one , written in a nice hand lists: "James B. Gass born June 4, 1841 died (then, filled in by a different hand] Nov. 23 1870. Next after a dashed line,(again in the fine hand) Susan Elizabeth Dillard Gass Born March 2, 1844. (Another line is drawn) then : James B. Gass Died Nov 23 1870 Aged 29 yrs 5 mo 19 days. Then a line. Then in a hand which seems to be Amelia Gas's writing : Susan Elizabeth Dillard Gass Died June 4 1922 aged 78 yrs 3mo 2 days.
The next two pages give all the names in the family of Wm. A. Gass and Amelia A. Gass, including their six children.
Their second child was my father, Claude Ellis Gass Born Aug 25, 1894. I inherited the Bible from him.
A page bearing the letterhead of The Windsor Hotel lists six pallbearers, probably for William Alonzo Gass's funeral: J. P. Davis, Ed Plumer, Elza Breeden Elmer Dishon, Alf Ellega, and Willie Beaty. The printed part of the page has these words: The Windsor Hotel, W. A. Gass Prop. Centrally located corner opposite Post Office and Bank. Modern Throughout. Auto Bus Meets All Trains. French Lick, Indiana. At the top are the words: Established 1900, Same Management 1922. (This was apparently an old printed page, since William Alonzo Gass died April 9, 1932..) The other side of this page gives the names and dates of the children of James Byrum Gass and Elizabeth Susan Gass: William Alonzo, Clarissa Campbell, Sarah Jane, and Brother. It also gives James Byrum's death date as Nov. 23 1873--which does not agree with the Family Record pages. Also his marriage date as Oct 12, 1864.
The last half of the page lists dates for James Beaty, Elsworth Beaty, Ora Beaty, Ida Beaty , and the marriage date for Elizabeth Gass to James Beaty as June 25, 1875.
