FIRST GENERATION
1. William Jones was born about 1768, probably in Abingdon, VA.
He died Unknown.
Further research is necessary to establish William Jones as the father of James Jones from
Abingdon, Virginia. As of January, 2000, the following is known:
There is a William Jones in the 1820 and 1830 Washington County censuses for Abingdon, VA.
Marneal Gene Jones (son of Paul H. Jones) reports that there was a William Jones living in
Abingdon, Virginia in the 1780's which is probably him. This was the only William in the county.
Pauline Case Clapp (daughter of Myrtle Powell Case) reported in 1986 that Washington County
courthouse records show William King deeded to William Jones and Heirs, 1/4 acre lot in the
vicinity of Valley Street and Court Street in Abingdon, VA, on April 19, 1797 (will book 5,
page 432). Book 6 page 262 shows a deed from William Jones to the Town of Abingdon in 1816.
This is another property deeded after William Jones left Abingdon. On pages 97 & 98 of
Washington County Courthouse records, William M. Jones sold his house to Ann Barry on July
18, 1815, the same Lot #77 in the vicinity of Valley St. NE and Court Street. It has been
reported that William Jones sold his property about 1815 and may have moved to Chapel Hill,
Allen County, KY with his son McClellan, brother of James Jones.
"Washington County Marriages 1782-1820" reports the marriage of William Jones to Anne L.
Snodgrass on June 8, 1813. They were married by Edward Crawford (the same minister who
married James Jones and Rachel Gallaher). This could have been James Jones' brother William
or the second marriage of his father, William. The marriage book also lists the marriage of
a William Jones to Sarah Prewett around 1785 by Nicholas Reagan, minister.
"The Book of Southwest Virginia 1789-1800" for Washington County, VA lists a will of Thomas
Jones who could be the grandfather of James Jones and father of William Jones, entered
February 12, 1777 and probated September 30, 1777 (will book 1, page 25). Will of Thomas
Jones, wife Diana; sons Laughly, Robert, William, James and Thomas; daughters Agasy, Willia
and Elizabeth; witnesses Benjamin Gray, John Owins, Luraing Huse.
He died Unknown.

He served in the military in 1812 in the War of 1812. Wendy Henry reported that he was a
private in Captain William Smith's Company of Volunteer Artillery from Washington County, VA,
attached to the 3rd Regiment of Virginia Artillery under the command of Col. Constant Freeman.
He was honorably discharged from his service on July 5th, 1814 from Lamberts Point near
Norfolk, VA.
Ruby Jones Toliver reported that James was given a land grant by President Pierce. He
purchased T1N R3W E SE 533 on April 18, 1818 in Martin County, IN. Wendy Henry reported
that this land entry is in the archives at Vincennes. This land is somewhere near Buck Creek.
Legend has it that James had a grist mill on Lost River near where Buck Creek empties into
Lost River, and this mill was destroyed by a flood. Ruby Jones Toliver reported that James
and Rachel came to Indiana in 1817, settling at the south end of Peggy Hollow.
Wendy Henry reported that James Jones was inspector in Columbia Township in 1829, before Lost
River Township was formed. Lost River Township was formed in 1853. The first meeting took
place in the home of Rhoda Hawkins. The minutes of the meeting, written on June 8, 1853,
report that James Jones was elected township trustee.
He appeared on the census in 1850 in Columbia Township, Martin County, IN. It lists James,
Rachel, Joel and John.
He died on October 10, 1854 in Rusk, Martin County, IN. He was buried in Anderson Cemetery, Martin County,

2, 1901, to which union were born three children, Eva, 14 years, Baby Marie, 16 months, who together with the husband
survive her, and an infant who died at birth. Her father and brothers, Fred, Sam, Floren, Orville and Clyde, and sisters, Emma
Lane and Dessa Marshall survive her. During the summer of 1909 Mrs. Scarlett united with the First Baptist Church of West
Baden, under the pastorate of Rev. C. A. Wade, later transferring her membership to Paoli Baptist Church, upon removing her
home to Paoli, and the light of her faith never dimmed, she had long weeks of suffering (14 weeks in bed) and the knowledge
that she was not to recover, came to her own mind. She called to her bedside her friend, Mrs. Ed. Nuss (who had long been
like a sister to her) and explained in detail the plans she wished carried out in the funeral. She wanted to live, particularly
for her family - they needed her so - but expressed continually her readiness to die, if it be the Lord's Will. Her last audible
words were: 'Dear Precious Lord.' Jeannie was rather a self-conscious woman, not showy in her life, but quick in sympathy, loyal
and earnest, full of live for the beautiful, beautiful herself, she loved the best, in material and spiritual things. Only a girl,
in years, but who shall estimate or measure the scope of her life in influence upon the stricken home from which she has flown
like the eagle, mounting higher and higher until, all at once we realized she is not with us, she has gone to be with God. To
realize the fullness of his promises, leaving behind her the wonderful legacies of wifehood and motherhood, beautifully lived -
her own life made beautiful by suffering, until the perfume therefrom pervades the atmosphere wherein her life was lived, and
she has but gone on, out of sight, for a time, as if into another room, with Him face to face." She was buried in Ames Chapel
Cemetery, Orange County, IN.

Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. James Edward Lane reported that Charles (known as Charley) was a barber during the
early years of his life. Later, he operated a small grocery store across from the post office in French Lick, IN, until
shortly after World War II. When coffee was a nickel a cup, with no free refills, Charley had the reputation of drinking
his cup two-thirds to three-quarters of the way down, then asking for his coffee to be "warmed up". Long after his death,
there were people in southern Indiana, when they wanted their coffee warmed, would say "Charley Lane my coffee". The Springs
Valley Herald (February 3, 1905) reported " All kinds of people come to French Lick - millionaires and misers, princes and
paupers, sports with money to throw at the birds and parsimonious old codgers who are so stingy and close that Pluto with all
its penetration can't get through them. But the tightest, flintiest specimen of Shylock that ever struck this valley ambled
into Charlie Lane's barber shop the other day for a shave. He sported the somewhat generous name of Pat Scanlan, and hailed
from Peoria, Ill. Before taking the chair he inquired the price of a shave, and when told that it was 15 cents he threw up
his hands in holy horror and started to leave for another shop; but when told that it was the same price concluded to remain.
When Charlie came to the finishing touches and said 'Wet or dry?' Pat Said, 'a little oil, please.' Charlie suggested a little
tonic which Pat accepted, but when he went to settle and found that the tonic was 10 cents extra he raised a howl and swore he'd
been buncoed. Then with tears in his eyes, he declared he was a poor man with barely enough to get home on. Thinking he might
be a pauper, Charlie let him off. He is reported to be worth $200,000, and probably is, for he certainly has never squandered
his money. He left for home feeling that French Lick was a skin game from first to last." Emma Dot Connell and Charles
Edward Lane had the following children:

NOTES
1. Census data is listed as follows:
Head of Household: Census year and location, family members, and other facts where appropriate.
Family Members: Census year and location, and other facts where appropriate.
2. The spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles and census records is often
incorrect. Early censuses were done verbally, with the census taker often spelling the name
based on how it was pronounced. The spelling could be different in every census. The same
thing occurred in obituaries and newspaper articles. However, in most cases these items are
reported in this document just as they were written.
3. I have attempted to omit all living persons from this document. However, there are cases
where I am not sure whether or not the person is still living. If you see someone listed
here that is still living, please let me know.
