The Children of William and Mary Haskins Clements were:
James Clements (1827-1907)
Nancy Clements (1829-1876)
*Thomas Clements (1830?- ?)
Julie Clements ( the 1850 census misspelled her name)(1840-1896)
*Jesse Clements (1835-1913)
Hester Clements (1837-?)
Elizabeth Clements (1838- ?)
Martha Clements (1843- ?)Jesse Clements and Thomas Clements served in the Civil War. The mustered in papers said Jesse was in the Co. I of the 38th Reg. He was mustered in New Albany, Indiana at the age of 26. He had blue eyes, fair hair, and fair complexion. He was 5'9" tall. His occupation was farming. Jesse was discharged because of disease. ( There was more on the card but the film did not show the back of the card.) No date. Pension records show Jesse applied for the pension. He lived in Newton Steward on Jackson Township of Orange County, Indiana. Jesse had a chronic diarrhea.
Thomas Clements was drafted at the age of 40 years old. He was enrolled September 26, 1864 at Washington, Indiana. He had blue eyes, candy hair and was 6 feet tall. His occupation was farming. He was discharged at Chattanooga, Tennessee, June 13, 1865. ( I have not followed up on any more information in the Archives of Indiana Library for these Men)
Julie Ann Clements is my great grandmother. I received most of the information about the Clements family from my aunts. I then found information or census reports that has confirmed the information. The background on Julie Ann Clements:
Julie Ann Clements John Samuel Charnes Born: August 16, 1840 Born: August 14, 1840 Place: Orange County, Indiana Place: Orange County, Indiana Married: December 7, 1854 in Orange County, Indiana (the records are in the Marriage Books of Orange County)
Place: Orange County, Indiana Place: Orange County, Indiana Burial: Mt. Lebanon Cemetery Burial: Mt. Lebanon Cemetery (The Charnes stones are not in good shape. They were made of sandstone. The wording is being weathered away. My grandfather was a whet stone cutter. When some of the Harris and John Charnes babies died the stones were cut by my aunts family. The girls had carved that names of the babies on the stones but the names have erroded away and the stones are broken.)
The children of Julie Ann and John Samuel Charnes were:
1. William Charnes (1855-1861) He is buried in Hillham Cemetery next to John Charnes' parents: Josiah Asbury Charnes and Susannah Charnes, Josiah's wife and Mary Carrel, who was Susannah's mother.
2. Susannah Charnes (1858-1942)
3. Jesse Charnes (1861-1946)
4. Josiah Harris Charnes (1864-1938)
5. John Harris Charnes (1867-1938)
6. Mary Charnes (1871-?) My aunt remembered attending her funeral but can not remember the date
7. Nathan Asbury Charnes (1873-1950)
Sometime between 1900 to 1920 the Charnes' changed the spelling of their name to Carnes. Some of the tombstones used the Charnes spelling and some had the Carnes.
