He was the youngest son of a family of ten children, all of whom lived to be a ripe old age. Two of this family, Mrs. Esther Wininger and Mrs. Susan Breeden, survive him. On the fall of 1883 he was united in marriage to Luiza Jane Luttrell. four children were born to them, two of whom have preceded him in death; a daughter, Edith, died in infancy and a son, Clinton, died in 1936. He is survived by his widow, Minnie Lashbrooks and two daughters, Mrs. Ella Breeden and Mrs. Louis Breeden and a stepson, Earl D. Lashbrooks of Indianapolis, and four step grandchildren, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. His entire life is characterized by an endless amount of patience, and a sincere Christian love for his fellow men and his church. With his great patience he met life's disappointments and its joys. He found an excuse for a man who had wronged him, and he found an excuse for the person for whom no one else could find an excuse. In the discipline of his children it was his patience in not scolding for the 'forgotten task' which made them more keenly aware of their shortcomings and therefore the more careful next time. The needs and wishes of his neighbors were paramount to his own work. His plow was often left in the field while he aided someone else. His love of people was so great that he wanted to be surrounded by them. Sunday morning he would attend church, then he delighted in persuading as many people as possible to accompany him home. When this church was yet in the 'dream stage' he was a trustee, and no one knows the time and money he spent in its construction and maintenance. Many times he stretched the available funds himself. He loved to attend church services and was active up to the last few months in his attendance. In his dealings with others his fairness was of the caliber which refused $10 for a haystack which he thought was worth $7. With advancing age he never lost the youthful outlook, his enjoyment of younger people and children remained outstanding. His admonition was 'Teach them to be good.' One of his last concerns was for the care of his widow and with the clear perception that he was leaving this world he asked God to bless the little grandchildren whom he loved so dearly. So ends a life which will be unforgettable in this community as long as this church shall stand." He was buried at Moore's Ridge Cemetery in Orange, Indiana, United States.

The same issue reported "There is a Reaper whose name is Death and with his sickle keen he reaps the bearded grain at a breath and the flowers that grow between. Once again the Reaper has been abroad in the land and taken a beloved relative, sister and friend. Eliza Jane Luttrell Lashbrooks, one of a family of two children, was born to John and Susan Luttrell on April 27, 1865 and departed this life December 19, 1935 at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 22 days. Jane never knew a mother's love and care as death claimed her mother while she was yet a small child. Her father followed not many years after. In her early years she dedicated her life to the service of her Master by uniting with the Christian Church at Cane Creek, Indiana at the age of 18 years, later becoming a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Moore's Ridge of which church she remained a faithful and devout member until her death, ever taking great joy in worship in the Sunday School and Church. Many of her friends remember her last testimony in which she expressed a desire to meet them all in Heaven. On September 20, 1883 she was united in marriage to James C. Lashbrooks. To this union were born four children, Ella, Clinton, Edith and Pauline, all living except Edith who died in infancy. Jane had been in declining health for a number of years, but even in her suffering she always had a cheerful word and jest for her many friends. On Friday 13 she was stricken with pneumonia and in spite of all loving hands and medical science could do, she passed away December 19, 1935. Thus ended the earthly life of a beautiful Christian character. Volumes could not tell of her many virtues. They are written on the hearts of her friends. Little children loved her, one of her little friends begging to be allowed to see her after her death said, 'Mother, I love Jane.' The loving tribute of a little child of which higher praise there is none. Hers was truly a rich full life. Rich in the love she bestowed on her family and friends, full of the many kind and gracious deeds she found to do. No one ever appealed to her for help in vain. Her home has been many times shelter and a refuge for the friendless and homeless, and those who have known her warm hospitality are legion. She died as she live in faith believing, telling her daughter, Pauline, in her last illness, she was ready to go. She leaves to mourn an aged companion, two daughters, Mrs. Ella Breeden and Pauline Lashbrooks, a son, Clinton Lashbrooks, 7 grandchildren, James, Max and Rex Breeden, Jack, Eleanor, Mary Lou and Noel Lashbrooks, two step-grandchildren, Fern and Paul Apple, a daughter-in-law, Ruth Lashbrooks, and a son-in-law, C. H. Breeden, who she loved as her son. We can not feel that she is lost to them or to us or that she is far, 'Since near at need the angels are.' We believe that somewhere in God's universe she is alive and well today, that she is loving her dear ones as tenderly as when she was here and we know she would not have them mourn." On April 4, 1916, he was united in marriage to Miss Erma Moore, and they spent their years of companionship on a farm near Chambersburg, east of Paoli. No children were born into their home, but shortly before the death of Mrs. Lashbrooks in 1946 there came into their home a young lad, to whom they gave a parental care as to an only child, and whose love was wholly returned as to parents of his own by this child, who came to be then among his school friends, and is today, known as Tracy Lashbrooks, who today mourns the passing of these parents as they have gone from his embrace. Following the death of the Companion, and later the entrance of the son into army service, and later to the school of life. The bereaved citizen continued in the rural home, finding cheer in the friendliness and appreciation of neighbors and friends, and the occasional visit of the only son he knew and loved. A few weeks prior to his passing he became ill, and was removed to the Clark Hospital at Paoli for further care and treatment, and here on Sunday, April 15, 1957, came his passing, at the age of 74 years, 3 months, 10 days. Other than his son now residing in New Albany with the wife and baby son, there remains one brother--William Lashbrooks--of Paoli, and the many friends and neighbors of his life acquaintance. These will remember him for his quiet manner of a clean, Christian neighborly and friendly life of honesty of purpose, and his love for home, companion, son, and the community he called his home." While we all sorrow and sympathize with his loved ones there is no greater consolation than to know that when our loved ones are called away, they are prepared to go. Funeral services were conducted at this place Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Floyd Crocker with burial in the nearby cemetery. W. O. Ritter had charge of the funeral." The Springs Valley Herald (June 11, 1936) reported "At this, the flood tide of the year, we are reminded that death knows no time or season, but has all seasons for its own. Clinton, son of Eliza Jane and James C. Lashbrook, was born in Orange County near Moores Ridge January 8, 1888 and passed away at the St. Edwards Hospital in New Albany May 29, 1936 at the age of 48 years, 4 months and 21 days, having spent his entire life in the vicinity of Moores Ridge where he resided at the time of his death. On June 22, 1915 he was married to Mary Haworth. To this union was born three children, Jack, Eleanor and Mary Lou. On March 25, 1926 this companion was taken by death and he was left to be both father and mother to his three little ones. This duty he discharged faithfully and well. He was again married to Ruth McCarty Apple on August 29, 1931. One son, Noel, was born to this union also it may be truly said he take taken the place of a father to two little step-children, Paul and Ferne Apple, having loved them as his own. He was a member of the Moore's Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church since the year 1924 and was a faithful attendant until death. On May 25 while going about his work an accident occurred which later caused his death. He was taken to a hospital where everything which medical science could do was done but his injury proved fatal and he passed away on the morning of May 29. Despite the great suffering his mental facilities never failed and he was able to leave messages that are a great comfort to his dear ones. His greatest regret was that his family must be left without his protecting care. He leaves to mourn his wife, Ruth, four children, Jack, Eleanor, Mary Lou and Noel, an aged father, J. C. Lashbrook, two sisters, Ella Breeden and Pauline Lashbrook, a brother-in-law, C. H. Breeden, two step children, Paul and Ferne Apple, and countless other relatives and friends. The mother preceded him in death by only five months. In his death the community has lost an exemplary citizen, the father a dutiful son, the sisters a beloved brother and his family a devoted husband and father. But we know that their loss is Heaven's gain. Those who were near him in his last hours heard him pray. He left testimony that all was well with his soul and asked his dear ones to meet him in Heaven. Although we here are left with sorrowing hearts let us look beyond this scene of death to that glad reunion at the gates of the Eternal City where last Friday morning a mother awaited to welcome her son to his Heavenly home." He lived in the Briner Springs area and moved to French Lick before the age of 10. Louis loved to recall laying in his bed in the old farm house and listening to the sounds of the creek that flowed in front of the house. He could also tell some funny stories of how he and his brother Lowell made life miserable for the chickens in the yard. After moving to French Lick, the family raised a large garden on their property. Louis had a wagon and would pull the wagon full of onions to the various stores throughout the Valley. Louis graduated from French Lick High School in 1929. While in school, he worked at the tomato factory and caddied at the French Lick Springs Hotel for $1.25 per round of golf. After high school, Louis enrolled at DePauw University in Greencastle, where he graduated in 1932. Louis and Pauline celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this March with a card shower. Louis enjoyed receiving and reading the many cards sent from family and friends as his health would not permit him to leave his home. Louis had a nickname that came from an old television western he enjoyed watching. It seems that Bret and Bart Maverick always referred to their father as "Pappy" on this show. Thus, the nickname was born. To family and friends, Louis was "Pappy" and that is how his memory will remain. Pappy loved to have a big garden. He loved sweet potatoes and always had two rows in the garden. One year he planted pumpkins and had so many Pauline couldn't keep up with the supply. Some of those pumpkins ended up decorating yards in Indianapolis for Halloween. Pappy also loved his gladiola flowers. Like the sweet potatoes, there was at least one long row growing in the garden. Every year new bulbs would be added to his collection and the garden would be an array of many colors. Pappy supervised the bulb planting this past spring from his chair near the window that overlooks the garden. Pappy faced his illness with the same determination that he had faced life - not giving up. He fought hard to make the most of his remaining time with his family. During the months of the illness, Pappy became good friends with Reverend Albert Howard. They spent many hours discussing the illness that both men were fighting. Pappy lost the battle with his illness on June 19, 1997, at 3:35 p.m. with his beloved wife Pauline and his friend Reverend Howard at his side. Charles Louis "Pappy" Breeden was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Morton Price Breeden and John Lowell Breeden, one son David Louis Breeden, and one grandson, David William Breeden." This is indeed the passing of a worthy life ere the noonday sun has come, bit in its passing, all, with one accord may well unite in praise of this short life, and in sympathy at the broken tie and the untimely end. And since we cannot now add to the word of commendation which have so oft been spoken, it must indeed be true that a noble life has come to a close. Clarence was a devoted student, a profound thinker, an a deep reader. At an early age he planned for a good education and a life of usefulness and service to his parents and to his community. But because of failing health, he was compelled to give up his High School education at the end of the third year. He was a talented musician, having at various times held positions as a cellist with leading orchestras in Louisville, Kentucky, at Orlando, Florida and elsewhere. At the age of fifteen years he became a member of the Christian Church at Warsaw, Indiana, where he then resided and held his membership with that church the remainder of his life. He loved the church and Sunday School services wherever he might be. Moreover, he loved the truth not for policy's sake, not because it might be expedient, not because implanted in his heart, there was ingrained in his soul a love for higher things: the love for that which is true, for that which was genuine. Truly, a life is not measured by its length of days, but by human heart throbs, transcendent purposes and noble deeds. Measured by such a standard, his was a long life, well rounded and mature. Of his immediate family the father, mother, and one brother, Winfred, survive, with whom his memory will abide a benediction and a blessing, and to whom every friend and acquaintance extend their deepest sympathy. To you who mourn, the memory of the life and kindly deeds of Clarence is yours to cherish and to emulate. He has left behind him a tribute to the young men of his acquaintance, to his family and to his friends - that rich heritage of a good name, a dutiful son and brother, and a life spent in obedience to HIM who is the Master of our destiny. And as we soon shall stand about the open grave we may well say 'We can follow no further.' Funeral services were held at the Paoli M. E. Church at 2 o'clock p.m. Thursday, June 16, by Rev. Guy Sounders assisted by Rev. Bassett of Paoli and Rev. George Dalrymple, of Corydon. Interment in Paoli Community cemetery." Notes
1. Census Data: Rather than repeat the detail from a family census entry in each person’s record, it has been recorded only in the Head of Household record, and only the census year and location are recorded in the family member records (with a few exceptions, like adult children living with their parents). If you are reviewing a person who is not the Head of Household, be sure to look at the Head of Household entry to see if there is additional information.
2. Name Spelling: The spelling of names in source documents is often incorrect, with the name being spelled the way the writer thought it sounded. The spelling could be different in every document. In most cases the name is reported in this document as it was written, but some gross misspellings have been corrected.
3. Direct Ancestral Line: The direct ancestors of Wilma Sue McCarty Lane are highlighted in blue.
