From the Shively family bible about Phillip: "He was under the influence of predestination doctrine. He became interested in religion at ten years old, seeing that the preachers of the different denominations all claimed perfection and contradicted each other. He read the Bible through for himself, and seeing a complete oneness in the teaching and testimony of the inspired men and the fullness of salvation in Christ by the Gospel, he humbly received it as the law of his life. Having no one to baptize him, and being where a congregation were met, he preached to them the way of salvation as taught in the Gospel of Christ four days before he was baptized. He was baptized, he and his wife, November 18, 1832, and commenced preaching the Gospel of Christ the Lord Nov. 14, 1832. He was ordained by prayer and laying on of hands by elders Jacob B. Goodspeed's "History of Lawrence, Orange and Washingtogn Counties", published 1884, also mentions Phillip Shively in connection with Cane Creek Church: "Other ministers have been Christopher Flick, Phillip Shively, John Mavity, Christopher Cox, Thomas A. Cox and B. T. Goodman. In the old log church during the fall of 1843, Phillip Shively and Christian Hostetler conducted an interesting revival in which about forty members were added to the church. Another by B. T. Goodman was held in 1850 and nearly sixty converts were made among the best citizens of the community, and it resulted in great influence for good on the morals of the neighborhood."
