THREE DIE IN PLANE CRASH - Two Indianapolis Doctors Victims in Crash Last Evening
Miss Elizabeth Gottschalk, R. N., of this place, who is supervisor at Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, and Mrs. C.E. Luginbill, R. N., and Dr. M. L. Habegger, of Berne, knew the doctors, having studied under them while in training. Richmond, Ind., Dec. 6 [1934] - Three persons were killed and one injured Wednesday night when the airplane in which they were riding crashed in an attempt to land at the Richmond airport. The dead were identified as Dr. A. M. Mendenhall, of Indianapolis; his daughter Evelyn, of Richmond; and Dr. John Carmack, of Indianapolis. Howard Maxwell, of Indianapolis, their pilot, was injured. The Mendenhalls and Dr. Carmack had flown to Detroit Wednesday and were to have stopped at the Richmond airport before proceeding on to Indianapolis. They had asked Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hammer, of Richmond, to be at the local field and point their automobile in the direction of the wind, with headlights burning, so the plane could be landed. The field is not equipped for night flying. The Hammers said they heard the plane, and before they could get their automobile turned to give the signal, the ship fell to the ground about 300 feet west of the flying field. The pilot managed to extricate himself from the wreckage and was brought to the Reid Memorial hospital here. Miss Mendenhall was a newspaper columnist on the Richmond Palladium. Dr. Mendenhall was an obstetrician and formerly was head of obstetrics division of the Indiana University hospitals in Indianapolis. Dr. Carmack was head of the ear, nose and throat department at the hospitals.

Rev. Gaylord V. Saunders

Thurs. Feb. 8, 1934
SLAYING OF WABASH MINISTER IS OF SPECIAL INEREST IN BERNE
Not only was the slaying of Rev. Gaylord V. Saunders, former Wabash pastor, one of the strangest cases of murder in the history of Indiana, but the crime is of special interest here. Rev. Saunders, until a few months ago, was pastor of the M.E. Church at Wabash, and officiated in the wedding of Everett Sheets of Decatur and Mrs. Florence Schindler of this place in what is said to have been the last wedding he performed. That was in August. He quit the ministry to take a course in undertaking and embalming at Indianapolis. Indiana has been rocked time and again by murders, but his one, for sheer cold bloodedness, is said to surpass most recent crimes of this kind. His widow, according to her own confession, hired Joseph T. Mathers, aged 19 of Indianapolis to kill Saunders for ten dollars. Mrs. Sunders claims that her husband acted queerly, had made an attempt in January to commit suicide and that she was afraid to live with him any longer. The three persons held for the crime are the slain pastor's wife, Naomi Saunders, aged 36, Theodore Mathers, aged 19, roommate of Saunders, and Masil Roe, aged 19 former classmate of Mathers. Vilas Zuercher

(Handwritten date of Thursday, June 7, 1934)
ZUERCHER LAD BURNS TO DEATH Vilas Zuercher, 15, Victim of Bad Accident Tuesday Evening
The Solomon Nussbaum family of northeast of town received a message late Tuesday night telling them of the tragic death of Vilas Zuercher, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zuercher of Rittman, O., formerly of near here. The Zuercher family formerly were close neighbors to the Nussbaum family. Details of the accident have not been learned, but the brief message stated that the lad was attempting to build a fire in a stove when an explosion occurred, throwing burning fluid over him and before his clothes could be extinguished he was fatally burned. He died a few minutes afterward. The mishap occurred Tuesday evening. The boy is a grandson of Dan Zuercher of this place, and was born in this community. His mother was formerly Viola Musser of near here. Besides the parents, eight brothers and sisters survive, the youngest one being only a few days old. The unfortunate lad had been crippled for several years. Details and the time of the funeral have not been learned here, but it is believed the funeral was held this afternoon. Those from here who motored to Rittman were: Mrs. Ajule Brunner, Harry and Raymond Musser, Mrs. Dan Zuercher and Fred Zuercher of Decatur. They were motored to Ohio by Clemenz Wulliman. The Zuercher family has had a hard struggle against sickness, accidents and other misfortunes. It is not known where the accident happened, but it is believed it was in the Zuercher home, although some say the boy was employed some other place.
