Miss Elizabeth Barnhart

A young woman named Elizabeth Barnhart, an idiot inmate of the County Poor House, aged about thirty five years, was burned to death Saturday morning about 5 o'clock. She had been an inmate four years. During the day, these idiotic people are allowed to wander about the premises, and this poor unfortunate, on the occasion alluded to, went too near the oven in which bread was being baked, and her clothing caught fire. The clothing being woolen did not burn very freely; but she inhaled the smoke and hot air, which caused her death in a very short time. Her body was not very badly burned, and death would not have resulted had she not inhaled the smoke. She gave no alarm, and her clothing had burned some time before her condition was discovered. Her parents were sent for and the remains interred in the cemetery on Poor Farm grounds. - Lafayette Journal

Christine (Bade) Branning

MOTHER DIES SOON AFTER BIRTH OF BABY - Mrs. Christine Branning Passes Away at Lutheran Hospital from Tumor of the Brain
A few hours before Mrs. Christine Branning, 38, wife of Fred Branning, 3231 South Harrison street, died of tumor of the brain at an early hour yesterday morning at the family home, she gave birth to an eight-months child. For two days, medical men had seen that the tumor would cause the woman's death. The stork was winging his way to the home. It was a race between death and the life of the living baby. Mrs. Branning had been unconscious for hours. The stork's flight was heard and the attending physician did all in his power to facilitate the youngster's arrival. Medical skill won and a short time before the mother died a new soul was brought in the world. The babe was taken to the Lutheran hospital where reports last night were that the baby was doing well. Mrs. Branning was born in Wisconsin. She had been a resident of Fort Wayne for the last decade and belonged to the Emmaus Lutheran church. She is survived by her husband and three daughters, Freida, Estella and the baby girl, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bade and three brothers, Fred, George and William Bade.

INJURIES IN FALL ARE FATAL TO DAN LUGIBIHL - Services at Pandora, Ohio Today for Local Resident
Daniel Lugibihl, 69, a resident of Berne for the past 15 years died t 10:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne where he had been a patient since Monday. Lugibihl made his home with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Reusser. Death resulted from injuries he received in a fall down a flight of steps in the Reusser house early Monday morning. Lugibihl suffered a severe fracture of his skull and a massive brain hemorrhage which resulted in two blood clots on his brain. He was taken to the hospital at noon Monday where surgery was performed. Lugibihl never regained consciousness and all efforts to save his life failed. He was placed in an oxygen tank but never rallied. An autopsy was performed Thursday morning which revealed the extent of Lugibihl's head injuries. He had not been sleeping well lately and apparently wanted to go downstairs in the Reusser home when he had his fatal fall. His head struck a window sill and also the corner of a mopboard in his headlong plunge down the steps. A native of Ohio, Lugibihl came to Berne in 1940. He did various kinds of odd jobs. In his early years here he cut corn for farmers and in recent years he operated a power lawn mower and roller and took care of numerous lawns in town. In addition, he was employed part time by the City of Berne to clean the streets. Born July 2, 1886, near Pandora, Ohio, in Putnam County, Lugibihl was the son of Christian and Marie Schumacher Lugibihl He joined the Grace Mennonite Church at Pandora in 1906 through baptism. W. T. Mason

Many of our readers will remember the young man, Mr. W. T. Mason, who attended school at this city, under the management of the Messrs. Hopkins. His home was near Lafayette. Last Sunday a week ago, he was killed by lightning, at about 5 o'clock in the evening. He was an excellent young man and was engaged to be married to a young lady of this city, who went to his late home to be present at the funeral. Mr. Mason, after he attended school here, read law in this city, in the office of N. Vanhorn for several months. He also taught three terms of school in this county. He was at home alone at the time of his death, and had gone out, as is supposed, to take a walk. The lightning struck a hedge within ten feet of him and he was found upon his face, killed by the concussion. He lacked one month of being 21 years old. He had extraordinary talent for one of his age; and would have been taken for a person considerably older. Mr. J. O. Garr, who attended school with him and was his warm personal friend, accompanied Miss Eva Nicholson, of this city, to the late home of her affianced, the deceased, his parents knowing and approving the engagement, having telegraphed the sad news and an invitation to come. Her acquaintance with the deceased began at the house of Mrs. Garr, the mother of Mr. J. O. Garr. The latter, on account of his strong friendship, offered to accompany Miss N. and the two went, but they were so delayed the funeral had occurred before their arrival. Mr. Mason had only been six days gone from a visit here at the time of his death, and it is remarkable that in the very last conversation he had with Mr. Garr, the subject of being struck by lightning was discussed, and Mr. Mason expressed the absence of all fear of lightning. Mr. Garr and Mr. Mason's mother accompanied Miss Nicholson to the grave. Of this visit, most affecting as it was, we will say nothing because the awful solemnity of such an occasion can only be felt, not described. At the time of his death the ink was not dry upon an envelope which contained an affectionate letter addressed to Miss Nicholson. It was sealed and was given to Miss N. while she was there. Who can imagine the heart throbbing and heart aches that must have been experienced while she read that letter, the writer, her affianced husband, having been consigned to the tomb?

John May died at Williamsport on Sunday morning of last week of delirium tremens. He was attacked the night before. He died in a fit, raving terribly, and lacerating his face with his finger nails. He had an attack a month or so since, and was then warned by his physicians that the next would likely prove fatal, but it seems that his appetite was so strong that he was powerless to heed the caution. For a long time he has kept the only saloon in Williamsport, and it was discontinued at the last sitting of the County Board.

Stuart Sauders

Handwritten-Sat. Sept. 17, 1955
Schoolboy, 8, Hit, Killed In Crossing So. Anthony
The first school-child fatality of the 1955-56 school year was recorded here about 9 p.m. Friday when eight-year-old Stuart Sauders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill J. Sauders of 1526 Eckart Street, was struck by a taxicab in the 4200 block of South Anthony. The child, a second-grade student at the John S. Irwin School was declared dead on arrival at Parkview Memorial Hospital. Dr. H. Paul Mill, Allen County Coroner, said the boy had a fractured skull and a broken neck. An inquest will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. A charge of failing to yield the right-of-way has been filed against the cab driver, Manford Widmeyer, 47, 622 Southview Ave. Police released Widmeyer on his own recognizance pending the outcome of the coroner's inquest. The child and his mother were on their way home from shopping in Anthony Wayne Village when the accident happened. The mother, Mrs. Betty Sauders, had crossed Anthony Blvd. about 100 feet north of McKinnie Ave., form the east to west curbing. She told police she thought her son was with her when she crossed the busy highway. When she reached the west curbing her attention was attracted by the screeching of brakes and as she turned around she saw her son lying in the street. Widmeyer told Traffic Lt. Joseph Meyer that the cab was traveling only 20 miles an hour and didn't see the boy until he was at the cab's fender. Widmeyer said he applied the brakes but the hood hit the child. Surviving are the parents and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sauders, of Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Virgil Cottrell, R.R. 1, Hicksville, O. The boy's body is at the Evans Funeral Home at Payne, O., where it may be viewed after 7 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, the Rev. D.V. Mrs. Catherine Scanlon

Mrs. Catherine Scanlon, living in the southeast part of town, is one of the oldest persons in the county. She lives with her son-in-law, Mr. Fitzgibbon, and was 99 or 100 years old, the first week of last month. For about five years she has been blind and has not been able to sit up or work, but her appetite is good and her hearing is remarkably acute for one so old. She replied to inquiries promptly and as cheerily as if she were in her teens. About eleven years ago one of her sons was killed on the railroad, and her mother's heart was so deeply wounded that she wept until her sight and strength both began to fail. Her daughter attributes the loss of her sight to this grief. She is the mother to eleven children, six of whom are yet living, the oldest being 80 years of age. She removed to this country from Ireland twenty years ago, her conversation being strongly marked by the peculiar brogue of that people. To the time of her son's death by violence, she had always been of vigorous strength and good health. Unless attracted by some disease, not now developed, she bids fair to live several years.-Lebanon Patriot
