Son of James Adair Ringswald, Sr. and Nannie (Nettie) Ella (Lay) Ringswald, Jim was born on 7-25-1924 in Louisville, Kentucky and he passed away surrounded by family on 8-3-2017 in Fort Wayne, IN after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was fortunate to be able to live in his own home until just this past spring and he celebrated his 93rd birthday together with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends, just weeks before his passing.
Jim married Dorothy Louise Peak in 1947 and they were married for 56 years until her passing in 2003. Jim served in the US Army 42nd Rainbow Division in Germany and Austria during WWII as a Tech-Sergeant/Medic, followed the occupation forces afterward as they liberated the concentration camps, and attended some of the Nuremburg Trials which made an indelible impression on him. He maintained lifelong friendships with his fellow Army medical staff/crew members and regularly attended 42nd Rainbow Division Veterans' reunions at various places all around the country over the years, with just two members surviving his passing. While married with 2 young daughters and working to support his family as an assistant instructor, Jim completed an advanced 5 year engineering program at The University of Kentucky (Lexington) in just over 4 years, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical engineering in 1950 with honors. After working in Dallas, TX with Chance Vought Aircraft for a few years, Jim accepted an offer with the ITT Aerospace Optical Division in Fort Wayne, IN from which he retired after 33 years as Senior Mechanical Engineer in 1986 where he worked on numerous projects for the very early and continuing US space program throughout his career.
Jim was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church since 1955, where he served as Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, achieving the 4th degree, where he regularly volunteered for community charity fund-raising activities; helped build a home through Habitat For Humanity; volunteered at the St. Mary's Soup Kitchen for over 22 years; and regularly salvaged discarded furniture, bicycles, vacuums, etc., repaired/restored them, and donated them to various charities, including the Vincent House. He accepted a request from the St. Vincent DePaul Society to help build bookcases for the school and chests of drawers (including over 200 drawers) in his woodworking shop for the St Vincent DePaul store. James Redmond Shields was born in Buffalo, New York, on August 13, 1923 to William and Mary Shields. He grew up in Fostoria, Ohio. James attended St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, on football and track scholarships, before deploying to serve his country during World War II. Returning from serving as an officer in the Merchant Marine in World War II, James married his wife of nearly seventy years, Margaret (née Scheiber) Shields on November 15, 1947. Following World War II, James pursued a twenty-eight year career with Merrill Lynch. He took that knowledge to invest in and develop numerous companies, including WaterFurnace Renewable Energy, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of geothermal heat pumps. As James put it, "Starting a business and being successful is the American way of life. I believe that if you have the money to invest, and you can employ others, you are doing something worthwhile." For his commitment and accomplishments, James was inducted into the Greater Fort Wayne Business Hall of Fame in 2009. James believed that with great power comes great responsibility: "God has been very good to me and my family, so I consider it my duty to give back to our community, local charities, and schools. It is an honor to be able to give back to the community that has given so much to me." That philosophy led James to serve on many community boards and charitable organizations over the years, including the Board of Trustees for the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for 22 years, St. Anne Home and Retirement Community, St. Joseph's College, and the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society. In addition, he was a friend and benefactor to Bishop Dwenger High School, the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Saint Jude Catholic Parish, the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department, Matthew 25 Health And Dental Clinic, and the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana, Inc. among others.
