TAKES TWO POISONS TO MAKE CERTAIN OF DEATH - MRS. THOMAS BERRY SUICIDES AT HOME ON E. CENTER STREET
Found Lying Unconscious at an Early Hour on Saturday - EMPTY BOTTLES ARE FOUND - Large Quantities of Chloroform and Laudanum Were Used
Despondent because of ill-health, Mrs. Miranda Berry, widow of Thomas Berry, who died last February, suicides early Saturday morning by taking chloroform at her home, corner of Scott and Center street. Mrs. Berry was found by Mrs. Magner, who went to the Berry home where she has been spending the day. It was about 5 o'clock when she reached the Berry home. She found the victim lying on the floor of the house in an unconscious condition. Drs. Angus C. McDonald and T. J. Shackelford were hastily summoned, but they were unable to do anything to save Mrs. Berry's life. It was ascertained by the physicians that she had taken laudanum and chloroform. Several empty bottles which had contained poison and which were purchased at various drug stores were found.
Often Threatened Suicide.
Mrs. Berry had often threatened to suicide. Even before her husband died she became despondent at time and relatives thought it best to destroy bottles of poison they found about the house. During the past two months Mrs. Berry had been more despondent than at any previous time. She had not threatened to take her own life, however, since last summer.
It is thought by the physicians that Mrs. Berry took the poisons shortly before she was found. A granddaughter, Miss Ethel Johnson, was in the house, but did not hear Mrs. Berry go downstairs. Mrs. Berry left no note of explanation.
She is survived by a son, Samuel Elder of East Warsaw, and a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Johnson of Niles, Michigan and a half brother, who resides in Kansas.

A cold-blooded and premeditated murder was enacted on the evening of the 16th at the village of Young America, 15 miles southwest of Logansport. The victim was Enoch Brumbaugh, a young man whose parents reside in that neighborhood, and who formerly was a brakeman on the Pan-Handle Road. His murderer is a young farmer named William Green, who has long been known as a bad and dangerous man. The particulars of the affair are about as follows: Brumbaugh and Green were in attendance at a festival being given at Young America. Their particular crowd had a keg of beer and were enjoying it all undisturbed when the village band struck up a piece of music. Green was disposed to yell and dance, whereas his friends desired to keep quiet in order to hear the music. Brumbaugh requested him "to let up on the noise," and Green not doing it, Brumbaugh gave him a slight shove. This greatly offended Green and he swore and jumped around like a demon. Finally he exclaimed to Brumbaugh: "Just wait a few minutes and I will be ready for you." He then spring into his buggy, drove to his home, a half mile distant, and returning within 15 minutes, shot Brumbaugh through the body, killing him almost instantly.

George Roop received a telegram this morning apprizing him of the death of his brother, William Roop, aged 72, which occurred this morning at the soldiers' home at Marion, where he was an inmate. A letter had been received last week from William, in which he spoke of having neuralgia in the side of his face, but nothing serious was spoke of and the death message today was the first word received since then.

After the war he went west and he was the first man who transported wood by a railroad up Pike's peak to the miners. He was never married. He leaves two brothers and a sister - George, of this city; Dan, of Pleasant Mills, and Mrs. Jane Roop Winans, who lives in New Mexico. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the soldiers' home. George will attend the funeral. A letter received later today by Mr. Roop from hospital authorities stated that his brother was taken to the hospital yesterday suffering from bronchial-pneumonia, and that it was not expected that he would survive the day. The letter written before his death was not received until after the telegram this morning announcing the death.
