Dr. Richard Hill

Dr. Richard E. Hill, 87, passed away on March 17, 2017 following a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Dick was born on February 6, 1930, the only child of the late Emmett and Ruth (Bergman) Hill. Raised on a farm near Bargersville, Indiana, Dick won many 4-H awards, was president of the Junior Leaders, and was a 4-year starter and co-captain of the Union Township High School basketball championship team. His love for his parents, friends, and community of his youth held special meaning throughout Dick's life. The U.S. Army ROTC program provided an opportunity for Dick to be the first in his family to attend college. He earned a B.A. from Indiana University in 1953, followed by his service as a 1st Lieutenant in Japan and Korea from 1953 - 1955. He was later a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, and the awardee of three service medals. With help from the GI Bill, Dick earned an M.B.A. from I.U. in 1956. While in Bloomington, he met a young nursing student, Barbara Ann Snyder, who was to become the love of his life. Dick and Barbara were wed in Indianapolis in 1957. The two were inseparable, sharing all of their life experiences as partners. Dick earned a Ph.D. at Purdue University in 1970, and joined the faculty of Western Kentucky University. In 1971, he moved his family to his wife's hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was a Professor in the Business School of Indiana-Purdue University for 20 years, before retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1991. Dick saw tremendous value in higher education, and was admired by his students for encouraging them in their academics and careers. He believed that people should be treated fairly in the workplace, and used his Human Resources expertise to serve as Executive Director of the Personnel Accreditation Institute. He was appointed Commissioner on the Metropolitan Human Relations Board and served as an AARP National Trainer. Having encouraged Barbara to earn a doctoral degree and to become a Professor herself, the two shared their passion for education as an IPFW couple, continuing their support and involvement as "Mastodons" even after retirement. Dick supported the Fort Wayne community he loved through many generous sponsorships. Founding a nursing scholarship and funding specialized training programs for rehab therapists were but a few of his causes. Dick loved travelling all over the country with Barbara in their RV, and attending and hosting Hoosier Cruisers RV rallies. He was most proud of his parents, wife, children and grandchildren, and cherished his lasting friendships with childhood friends, IPFW colleagues, special neighbors, former students, and friends from Plymouth Church and the Parkinson's Support Group. Naomi E. (Leamon) Jewett

Naomi E. Jewett, 79, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother was called to heaven. We shed tears of sadness and joy as she passed away last Friday, March 31, 2017. Proverbs 31:10, "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." Born in Fort Wayne on April 7, 1937, Naomi was the daughter of W. Kenneth and Mary Plumley Leamon. Along with her nine brothers and sisters, Naomi learned the importance of family, of sticking together, of making do, and working hard at an early age. The work ethic came naturally and soon childhood play advanced into delivering newspapers with her older brother, waitressing at Murphy's, and on the endorsement of her teacher, bookkeeping at a small business. After graduating from Central High School, she became a secretary at Indiana and Michigan Electric Company. During this time, Naomi experienced a life-changing event when her brother brought home his friend, Harold Jewett, for Sunday dinner. A year and half later on May 2, 1959, the two were married, promising before God to live out their wedding vows. The bride was a breath of Spring. Life picked up speed as the children arrived, first a little boy, Dwight, and then a girl, Teresa. Naomi was a loving mother, helping in all their activities, volunteering extensively at Harrison Hill School. With both kids in school, Harold requested Naomi's help at his business Auto Collision Service. She willingly agreed, serving as CFO and co-owner in her under-the-radar, indispensable manner for over fifty years. As a committed Christian, Naomi worshipped at three congregations, first at Brookside Mennonite Church, next at First Missionary Church, and most recently at The Chapel. Along with Harold she shepherded the junior high youth group at Brookside for almost fifteen years. Working as a team, they planned monthly parties, Chicago baseball trips, and even a trip to the Billy Graham's crusade at McCormick Place. Naomi was a long-time member of the Fort Wayne Women's Business Association which honored her as their Woman of the Year. She also was a thirty year member of the Fort Wayne Christian Women's Association acting as its president. Those who knew her best would agree Naomi's gift was hospitality. She enjoyed hosting countless gatherings of friends in her lifetime. Everyone looked forward to the Jewett's summer parties at Lake Wawasee and the Christmas celebrations at their home in town. She is survived by her husband, Harold Jewett; and two children, Dwight (Beth) Jewett, and Teresa (Jerry) Norton. Naomi was blessed with an athletic grandson, Hunter and appropriately, three granddaughters, Reagan, Hannah, and Shelby who enjoyed shopping with her as much as she did with them. She was also survived by her siblings, Joan Patton, Joe Leamon, and Martha Powers. Naomi was preceded in death by her four brothers and two sisters. Naomi's life was complete and overflowing with Jesus' love. We know we will see her again. Services 11:00 am, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at The Chapel, 2505 W. Hamilton Rd with calling one hour prior. Calling also Friday, April 7, 2017 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at The Chapel. Memorials may be made to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana or The Chapel.
