COUPLE KILLED IN CAR CRASH
Port Salerno - An elderly Stuart couple were killed Saturday night when their car was struck after pulling into the path of a pickup truck on U.S. 1 near Cove Center shopping center. Sara and Ivar Hilstad, of 3874 S.E. Fairway East, were killed in what Florida Highway Patrol officials described as an alcohol-related accident. Officials did not elaborate. They are this year's 12th and 13th traffic fatalities in Martin County. The couple's daughter, Karen Ractor, 41, of California, who was in the back seat of the Plymouth Carvelle, also was injured and taken to Martin Memorial Hospital, where she was reported in
fair condition. The driver of the Ford truck, Michael Freudenberg, 25, of 1818 S.E. Harrison St., Stuart, sustained head injuries in the accident which occurred at 8:10 p.m. in front of Goodwin's Seafood restaurant, 6060 S.E. U. S. #1. Freudenberg, also admitted to Martin Memorial, was listed in fair condition early Sunday morning. Sara Hilstad, 74, who was driving the automobile, died at the scene of the accident. Her husband, Ivar, 83, died on the way to the hospital, authorities said.
According to witnesses, the Hilstad's car pulled halfway onto the southbound lane of U.S. #1 from the restaurant's parking lot, then tried to make it to the median strip crossing. The restaurant is located across U.S. 1 from Cove Center shopping Center. Freudenberg's truck struck the car on the driver's side in the left southbound lane of U.S. #1, the witnesses said. "I was in the right-hand lane about 100-150 feet behind the pickup truck, which was in the left lane. We saw the car pull out of the restaurant, so we started to slow down," said Roger O'Brien of Jupiter, who was driving home from Treasure Coast Square Mall.
He estimated the truck was going about 40 mph. O'Brien said the car had pulled out about three feet onto U.S. 1. "I thought she was going to pull back. Then all of a sudden, she pulled out. There was nothing he could do about it. It was bad," said O'Brien. He also said he swerved from the highway to avoid the accident. Troopers said Freudenberg applied his brakes, but was unable to stop. No charges will be filed in the accident, troopers said.
The sound of the impact startled customers inside Goodwin's restaurant, where family had just finished eating shrimp dinners, employees said. "One lady ran out of the restroom and went to the window and said there had been an accident," said Teresa Harwood, a waitress.
She said the Hilstads told employees they lived in Stuart, but had formerly lived in South America.

DEATH THE REAPER - Andrew Makemson Expires from Heart Trouble Sunday Night - Demise Came Unexpectedly
Andrews Makemson, a well-known resident of Warsaw and a veteran of the civil way, died suddenly at midnight Sunday and the news of his death was received with genuine sorrow by all of his friends - and they include all his acquaintances. On Saturday afternoon Mr. Makemson, who is a frequent visitor at this office, stopped as usual and conversed an hour or so with those here at the time. He was in his usual jovial mood and went home feeling apparently all right. On Sunday, however, he was taken with vomiting and diarrhoea (sic) and was under the care of a physician. He suffered all day Sunday and at midnight passed away very suddenly. Mr. Makemson had been afflicted for some time with heart disease, and this gave him much trouble at times. Andrew Makemson was one of the old residents of the east part of the county, where he followed farming until he removed to Warsaw several years ago buying property on East Fort Wayne street. He was a member of Company A, Seventy-fourth Indiana infantry and served until November 4, 1863, when he was discharged for disability. He had the reputation of being a brave and courageous soldier and everybody liked him. He is survived by a wife and four children by his former marriage. They are Mrs. Joseph Menzie, Mrs. Wilson Elder, Mrs. Lillie Shroyer and Ira Makemson. There also remain to mourn his loss three brothers, Marshall and W. B. Makemson, of Tippecanoe township, and Robert, of this city; one sister, Mrs. Adaline Alexander, of Winfield, Kan.; a half-brother, Homer, of Washington township, and half-sister of Jennie Saylor, of Pierceton. The funeral service will be held Wednesday forenoon at Union church north of Pierceton, and the cortege will leave the late home of the deceased promptly at 8 o'clock in the morning. Rev. D. H. Guild will conduct the service.

Three area residents killed in two-car mishap Thursday
A two-car collision, which occurred Thursday at the intersection of County Road 900 North and State Road 101, five miles northeast of Decatur, claimed the lives of a 38-year-old Adams County father of five, and an Ohio mother and her 30-year-old daughter. Listed in satisfactory condition at the Adams County Memorial Hospital this morning was Barry Sanderson, 4, son of the younger woman killed in the accident. Killed outright in the accident was Edmund W.L. Thieme, 38, of Decatur Route 5. Mrs. Marlene Kay Sanderson, 30, of Route 2, Ohio City, O., died at the Adams County Memorial Hospital shortly after the mishap. Her mother, Mrs. Arlene Ruth Zinn, passed away at the Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne at 6:45 p.m., as a result of the accident. Theime died as the result of a crushed skull and broken neck, and Mrs. Sanderson's death was attributed to a crushed chest. Mrs. Zinn also died of chest injuries. The Sanderson child suffered severe injuries to the right side of his head and multiple facial lacerations. The Zinn death brought to four, the number of people to die in 1971 as a result of injuries suffered in automobile accidents on Adams County roads in the new year. The county did not suffer its fourth fatality in 1970 until August 18, 1970. A total of 17 people including three in the city of Decatur were killed in accidents on county roads in 1970. Thursday's fatal accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. when Thieme , who had just left his home for work on County Road 900 North and was headed west on the road, apparently failed to stop at the intersection of County Road 900 North and State Road 101. According to Adams County Sheriff Harold August, Thieme went into the intersection and the Sanderson auto tried to swerve to avoid hitting him when the collision occurred. After the two autos collided, the Thieme vehicle was forced to the south and off the west side of 101. The Sanderson auto, a 1966 two-door hardtop Chevrolet, traveled approximately 40 feet across a field on the west side of 101 before hitting a deep ditch and going another six or eight feet before striking the embankment with the rear end of the auto. The vehicle then came south for approximately another 30 feet before coming to a stop in the ditch. Sheriff August said that the Sanderson child and one of the women were thrown out of the Sanderson car and the other woman was pulled from the wreckage before law enforcement officials arrived on the scene. Thieme was apparently thrown out the right door of his 1966 Dodge and landed some 25 feet from his car along the road's berm. The investigation into the exact details of the accident continues today by the Sheriff's Department and the State Police.
Edmund Thieme buried in Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Adams County, Indiana, where his obit is posted.

YOUNG MOTHER STRANGLES BABY - Kills Two-weeks-old Baby Because Husband Refused to Claim It
Cleveland, O., Oct. 27 - "I did not believe my baby would have a fair chance in this world because my husband refuses to believe the child legitimate." With this explanation, Mrs. Blanch Tobias, 21, of Wooster, admitted today to authorities there she strangled her two weeks' old baby Sunday. Prosecutor J. O. Fritz, of Wooster, today files a first degree murder against the mother. Admission of the killing came, according to Fritz, after Mrs. Tobias was confronted with a physician's certificate which indicated the child had been strangled to death. "I pinched my baby's nose and pressed his throat. He died right away," Mrs. Tobias told Fritz, he said. "My child would never have had a fair chance in this world; he didn't look like his father." The husband, George Tobias, denied parentage of the child. Two months before the baby's birth George and his father, Joseph Tobias, were charged with brutally beating the expectant mother.
The charges were dropped when a reconciliation was apparently effected.
