Mary Jayne (Melcher) Defenderfer

Feb. 13, 1931 - June 3, 2008
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Mary Jayne Defenderfer, 77, unexpectedly passed away at her home in Phoenix on June 3, 2008. She was born on Feb. 13, 1931, in Anderson, to Joseph and Leone Melcher. She was the second of three children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Carl Defenderfer. She is survived by her two sons, Robert Carl Defenderfer, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Joseph Carson Defenderfer, of Moore, Okla., and her older brother Joe Melcher, of Puyallup, Wash. Mary Jayne and Carl were childhood sweethearts and neighbors in Anderson. One of her family’s most prized possessions was a picture of little “Sonny” as Carl was known, and Mary Jayne taken in their Sunday best at the age of 4 years old. Mary Jayne married Carl in 1952 after he served 4 years in the Air Force. They started their family in 1965 with the birth of Rob and then welcomed Joe in 1967. Jayne was a loving and dedicated mother who was always involved with her boys’ activities, whether it was Cub Scouts, Webelos, driving Rob to basketball practice in the worst of Ohio snow storms or watching the boys in little league baseball games. As her sons grew older, Jayne took a position with Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation as an executive secretary. She is fondly remembered by many of the people she worked with in the office. While living in Lancaster, Ohio, both Jayne and Carl were involved in their church, Grace Lutheran Church. Jayne also enjoyed serving in numerous volunteer positions serving the school and community. In 1988, with both of the boys in college, Jayne and Carl moved to the historic Ohio River town of Madison, Ind. With a beautiful view of the Ohio River and Kentucky from their property, they settled into retirement. For the next 18 years, they enjoyed Madison and became active in the community, especially volunteering with Lifetime Resources, a regional outreach program helping the elderly who have difficulty caring for themselves and helping them with affordable housing, prescription assistance and transportation needs. Jayne was so proud of Carl when he was selected 2006 Indiana Senior of the Year for his volunteer efforts. Jayne was always there to support and love her husband. Later in 2006, Jayne and Carl realized a dream of moving to Arizona. They had fallen in love with Arizona and Sedona during a visit in the 1960s B.C. (before children, as Jayne would like to say). They settled in Casa Grande. After Carl’s untimely death in November 2006, Jayne moved to Phoenix (Ahwatukee) in December 2007. She loved her beautiful new home near Rob and was looking forward to the birth of her first grandchild, a girl, in August. Jayne was taken by our Lord without warning, but her family is comforted by the fact that she did not suffer. She is remembered as a loving and compassionate wife, mother and friend who always put the needs of others above her own. Her caring nature and quick wit will be missed. A celebration of her life took place on Tuesday, June 10, at Mountain View Lutheran church in Phoenix. At 1 p.m. Saturday, she will be reunited with her loving husband, Carl, at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, 6805 Martin Luther King Blvd., Anderson, IN 46013. All friends and family are welcome. The family would appreciate any memorials be made to Lifetime Resources, 13091 Benedict Drive, Dillsboro, IN 47018 in Jayne’s name.
