Fort Wayne Tragedy. Betrothed Couple Believed to Have Drunk Carbolic Acid.
A supposed double suicide in Fort Wayne, Ind., has caused a sensation such as it has not experienced in years. Will E. Colerick is a prominent young attorney, son of Henry Colerick, one of Indiana's noted lawyers, and for some time he has been devoted in his attentions to Miss Mae Hall, a handsome and well known young lady, daughter of Mrs. Hall, a teacher in the public schools. In fact the couple was betrothed, and an early marriage was expected. Miss Hall lived with her mother, and was the only child. Thursday morning Mrs. Hall left for St. Paul where she was to have been married. That evening both the young people were seen by their friends apparently in the best of spirits, and it was the last time either was seen until the discovery of the tragedy. Thursday evening Will Colerick called upon his betrothed, and from that time until Sunday morning his whereabouts was unknown. When he failed to return to his home friends became alarmed, and instituted a search. Going to the home of Miss Hall they found the door locked, but an entrance was affected, and the dead body of Colerick was found on a couch in the front room, while in the bed room near, on a couch lay Miss Hall unconscious, and apparently dead. Both bodies were partially clothed. Physicians were summoned and it was ascertained that Miss Hall was living. She was removed to Hope Hospital, but will probably die. An investigation discloses a bottle which had contained carbolic acid in the room.

Mrs. Anna Featherstone, one hundred years, four months and three days old, died yesterday afternoon at her home in South Delaware Street near McCarty. The remains were taken to the home of her grandson, Timothy Crannon, at 357 South Delaware Street and will be removed to North Vernon for burial tomorrow. The day when Mrs. Featherstone reached the age of 100 years as November 12, 1896 and an account of the celebration of that day was given in The News as follows: "Mrs. Anna Featherstone of 352 South Alabama Street was 100 years old today. Friends, neighbors and relatives entered into a conspiracy to give the old lady a surprise party this evening in honor of the event. Mrs. Featherstone is cheerful and bright and in spite of her remarkable age, her intellect is in nowise impaired. She is feeble and has been ill for some weeks, so that she is confined to her bed, but, as she says, "I don't feel a bit sick. I'm just as strong as I have been anytime this thirty years, but I have a dinging in my head that bothers me." She lives alone in her little cottage and relies for company upon her neighbors and her children and grandchildren who come often to see her.
"Mrs. Featherstone was born in Lonsborough Parish, Ireland Nov 12, 1796. She was married in Ireland to Jeremiah Featherstone. When she was 29 years old they came to this country and settled in Trenton, NJ her husband following the occupation of a stone mason. Mrs. Featherstone kept boarders and accumulated enough money so that when her husband came to work on the construction of the JM&I Railroad, she bought 350 acres of land near North Vernon, Ind. She lived there 47 years. Her husband died twelve years ago, at 87 years and after his death Mrs. Featherstone came to Indianapolis to be near some of her children who had settled here. She has had 12 children, and four sons and three daughters survive. She has four grandchildren living in Indianapolis, one of whom, Timothy Crannon is a member of the police force. She has two great grandchildren living near Sciopo, Ind. Mrs. Featherstone looks forward to her end peacefully and hopefully, and she is continually thinking that each week will be her last on earth. "I'll never, never see another birthday," she said - "I have only about a week more on this earth! Neighbors who were with her and who have known her for years say that this has been a fancy that has been dominant with her with the last five years and that, to the eye, she seems as healthy and heart now as she did then. One of the old lady's daughters is 65 years old and nothing pleases Mrs. Featherstone more than to tell her that she is really looking younger than her daughter. A number of presents have been sent to the little cottage but the one that pleased the old lady most was a lace mob-cap (sic). "It's a finer cap then I ever wore," she said. "It will do nicely for me to be buried in." Mrs. Featherstone moved from her South Alabama street cottage to Delaware street a number of weeks ago. She rented a room and lived by herself, but a daughter nearby helped her in her work. She preferred to live alone, though she liked to have persons come to see her. She enjoyed her home in Delaware street because of the life she could see passing in the street. She remained in comparatively good health since her last birthday. A cold, possibly taken in moving and her old age, caused her death.

Henry J. Weed, 90 years old, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.M. Robertson, No. 480 North Meridian street of an acute attack of bronchitis. Mr. Weed was a pleasant-faced old man with a flowing white beard, cheerful and active-minded. He was well informed on past and current events. He entertained many friends on his birthday, Jan 18. He was born in Connecticut in 1807 and as a small boy moved with his parents to Madison County, New York, where he spent his boyhood on a farm. At 17 he became one of the first seven students who attended the Cazenovia Seminary and he was the last survivors of the original class. His picture and autograph and a letter of reminiscences were sent by request of the faculty to the seminary last year. He remained at the seminary a year and then went to Albany and spent a year. It happened that Governor Clinton died just before he started home and he was the first to bring the news, a fact which made him something of a hero without effort. He was in business for 45 years at Cazenovia, conducting a general store and his three daughters were educated at the seminary. Several years ago, he went to St. Louis and part of his time was spent there and in Kansas City with his daughters. His wife died four years ago, 80 years old, after having lived with him 60 years. He then decided to spend the remainder of his life with his daughter in Indianapolis. Funeral services are to be held at her house tomorrow and then the remains are to be taken to St,. Louis. Mrs. JZ Roraback, his other surviving daughter of Kansas City is in the city, accompanied by her daughter.
