William Baade, who for years conducted a trucking business in Fort Wayne and who was widely known throughout the city, died Sunday at his home, 733 East Jefferson street. He had been suffering for some time of the infirmities incident to one of his years. He was nearly seventy four years of age. Mr. Baade was a native of Germany. He was born at Windheim on March 9, 1830 and came to America when a young man. He soon located in America and engaged first in canal boating and later in teaming. He built up a large trucking business and prospered at the same time making a wide circle of acquaintances and forming friendships that never waned. He was a man of fine character, absolutely upright and of un-answering integrity. He retired from active business some years ago but retained his physical vigor until last spring when he began to fail in health. For some time past, he continued to grow weaker and at noon Sunday the end came quietly and peacefully. Mr. Baade was one of the oldest members of St Paul's Lutheran church and his life was that of a true Christian man. He took an active interest in church affairs and was one of the most prominent men in Lutheranism in this city. Last spring Mr. and Mrs. Baade celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. George Cooper

A young man named George Cooper, son of Ezekiel Cooper, a prominent citizen and farm residing seven miles from Columbus was found lying in the woods murdered Friday evening. His body and arms were full of bullet-holes and one hole in his head, his fingers broken and hands skinned up, as if a terrible struggle had occurred with the murderer. His overcoat was found near by as was a revolver and a large club on which was blood. He had been missing since Tuesday last. No clew (sic).
(Farther down the same page) -- The Cooper murder in Bartholomew County is still causing great excitement. The post mortem developed the fact that he had been shot many times, several times after death. He was undoubtedly hauled five miles to where he was found and everything about him arranged so as to indicate that he was killed there after a violent struggle. The toils are drawing closer around young Fix, who was arrested on Saturday and the general belief is that he is guilty. The club that lay near the body was found to have been cut from an old reaper tongue in the Fix barn lot, the other pieces and the chips hewn from it having been found there also an ax with nicks in it corresponding to marks on the club, Blood was also found on Fix's buggy. The inquiry has developed that Fix and Cooper were engaged in stealing clover-seed and a considerable portion was found stored in the Fix residence. The Coroner, Monday evening, rendered as his verdict that the deceased came to his death at the hands of Evan Fix who is now in jail. Great excitement prevails and a mob is feared.

Spectators at the hearing most of whom were unaware of the softly spoken arrangements being made with the judge for the exhumation broke into startled cries as Caroline Draves, sister of the dead girl heard the court's order. Harry Holman

Harry Holman, seventeen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Holman, former residents here, met death in a tragic manner Sunday afternoon. The sad affair occurred at Rochester, the present home of the Holmans, and was described as follows in Monday's Rochester Sentinel: "About 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Harold Ruh, Lucius Mackey, Ray Shore, Raymond Dawson and Harry Holman went down the Erie tracks, a half mile west of the station to the little stream known as the Minnow ditch. They were there to catch some crawfish to use as specimens in their school studies and had stopped in the warm sunshine by the railroad track. Two freight trains were switching, one east bound, and the other west bound. As the east bound freight pulled slowly past the boys, going in on a side track one of them proposed that they ride up town. Lucius, Ray and Harry all started and ran and the two first named got on safely and Harry caught one of the side steps on the rear end of a box car, but as the lower step had been bent under the car, he missed a footing. He failed also in striking the step with his knee and his feet struck the ground, and one of them was caught by the car wheel. This caused him to lose his hold on the step, and he fell, his coat catching on the boxing of the wheel. He was then rolled over and over and dragged for a distance of nearly two hundred feet before any of his companions could get to him when Ray Shore came to the rescue and pulled the form of the young man from the wheels. Life was almost extinct and he died without speaking a word and after gasping but once." Harry is said to have been a most popular boy in Rochester and during his residence here he was a favorite among all who knew him. His parents who are now almost crazed with grief have the deepest sympathy of Decatur friends. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the residence.

Arthur Welbaum

Tri-Lake was the scene of a death 8unday, when Arthur Wellbaum, who lives nine and one-half miles south, of Fort Wayne, was stricken with cramps while swimming. According to his friends, the young man was a good swimmer, so when he went under for the first time no attention was paid to him. When he came up and cried for help several swimmers rushed to his aid, but were unable to get the body. After repeated attempts to rescue him by diving, grappling hooks were secured and the body was located after it had been in the water for twenty-five minutes. Efforts at resuscitation failed. The body was brought to Fort Wayne. He was the son of Marshall M. Wellbaum, prominent farmer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning, at 10 o'clock, from the home In Pleasant township, and at 10:30 from the United Brethren church, at Five Points.
