Frederick G. Bulmahn, John Williamson, Thomas Williamson

Valve Leaked - A Fatal Explosion of Naphtha at West Upton, Massachusetts - F. G. Bulmahn's Fate
A special from West Upton, Massachusetts says: An explosion of naphtha is a retort used in connection with a water gas plant at the straw factory of William Knowlton & Son, in this city yesterday afternoon will result in the loss of three lives. The fatally injured are: Frederick G. Bulmahn, superintendent of the Western Gas Construction Company of Fort Wayne, Ind., age 23 years. John Williamson, aged 27, of Upton. Thomas Williamson, aged 30, of Upton. Mr. Bulmahn had just completed the installation for William Knowlton & Son of a water gas plant at the cost of $25,000. This being a country town, the plant was lighted in part by gas made at the neighboring town of Grafton. Mr. Bulmahn was testing the plant when a naphtha valve sprung a leak and the fluid ran down upon the heater. The naphtha ignited and an explosion instantly followed, shattering the windows and tearing a hole in the roof. The men were blown out of the building and when picked up they were nearly nude. Later dispatches say the three men, who were terribly burned in an explosion of a water gas retort at the straw factory of Wm. Knowlton & Son at West Upton, yesterday afternoon, are all dead. Thomas Williamson passed away last evening, Fred G. Bulmahn at midnight and John Williamson this morning. Fredrick G. Bulmahn, one of the victims of the accident was a resident of Fort Wayne. He was the son of Henry C. Bulmahn, a painter, who resides at 90 Baker Street, and a brother of Henry E. Bulmahn, of the Fort Wayne Iron Works. The deceased was 23 years old and unmarried. He made his home at the Baker Street residence of his parents, but in his position as draughtsman and constructionist for the Western Gas Construction Company; he had spent most of his time for the past two years out of the city. He went to Massachusetts two months ago and was preparing to return home just about the time the fatal mishap occurred. He had hosts of friends in Fort Wayne who will be grieved to learn of the horrible occurrence. The deceased was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church and a graduate of the Emanuel Schools.

HENRY NEITERT (sic), PROMINENT FARMER OF MILAN TOWNSHIP, THROWN FROM HIS BUGGY AND KILLED
Henry Neitert (sic; (Nietert), a prominent resident of Milan township, drove towards his home from New Haven yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. When a quarter of a mile north of that town his horse frightened at some object lying in the road, and jumping to one side, threw Mr. Neitert out of the buggy onto his head. The horse ran north and was caught by Mr. Rapp, a hay baler, who immediately recognized the rig and drove toward the town, finding Mr. Neitert lying to the side of the road in an unconscious condition. The injured man was placed in the buggy and driven rapidly to the office of Dr. Null, of New Haven, who did all that could be done to bring him back to consciousness, but to no avail as Mr. Neitert was then beyond the power of human aid. Dr. Null had him taken to his home at about 2:30 o'clock. His family had been notified of the accident but were not aware of the seriousness of it and did not realize that death was to remove the head of the family so soon. At about 4 o'clock Mr. Neitert passed away without ever regaining consciousness. The doctor made the statement that the fall and injury to the head had paralyzed the entire left side of the body. The deceased was a well-known and highly respected farmer of Milan Township and had many friends throughout the county as well as in this city. He was 59 years of age and leaves a wife and four children. The two sons are Mr. Henry and Gotlieb Neitert and the daughters are Misses Louisa and Sophia Neitert. Orlando Wilder

ORLANDO WILDER was born in Sandy Creek, Oswego County, N.Y., November 25, 1815, leaving there at the age of 18, when the family moved to Hudson, Portage County, Ohio. They lived there eight months and in February 1836, his father and the others of the family started for Indiana, arriving in March, but he did not reach here until a week later, having to bring a load of household goods with an ox team, leading a cow behind the wagon. Reaching this place they located where the old homestead now is, buying the land of the government. He united with the church at the age of 13, and was, with his father, mother, and brother William, one of the constituent members of the church organized at Jackson Prairie in June 1836. He was one of the pioneers of Millgrove and one of the founders of "Vermont Settlement," and endured all the hardships incident to the settlement of a new country. By hard work and economy (nor parsimony) he accumulated a competency. He was extremely liberal with the means with which God had abundantly blessed him, liberal to the church, to the sanitary commission during the war, to home and foreign missions, and to the poor and needy around him. But comparatively few of his good works are known, for he was a man who never boasted of his charities. What is known has been told by the recipients of his bounty. He literally obeyed the injunction, "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth." He was united in marriage to Ursula Humphrey, January 14, 1844, and his bereaved widow and two children, E.A. Wilder and Mrs. Eva Roas, survive him. One brother, G.K. Wilder, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah A. Fox, are all that is left of his father's family. He died on the old homestead Nov. 8, 1891, aged 75 years, 11 months, and 18 days. In his home, in the church, and in the neighborhood he will be greatly missed and will be "evermore remembered by what he has done." Funeral services were held at his late residence conducted by his pastor, Rev. D.Q. Travis, and notwithstanding the severe storm, was largely attended by sympathizing friends, and he was laid to rest in the Carlton Cemetery. To the widow and other surviving friends, we, as a community, extend our heartfelt sympathy, but we know what is their loss is his eternal gain."
