John Garwood, a young man of Blue Creek township, and well known here, was shot and instanly killed Sunday morning by Conrad Bauman, an aged resident near Willshire. The story, as told by our correspondants at Willshire, is as follows: Garwood was in Decatur Saturday and was drinking and during the evening drove to Willshire where he continued to imbibe freely. He had been keeping company to some extent with a daughter of Mr. Bauman and about midnight decided to call on her. He drove to the house, some three miles from town, left the rig in care of his partner and going to the door, rapped loudly and demanded admittance, Bauman denied him and ordered him away, but Garwood, crazed with drink, refused, whereupon, Bauman, who had secured his shot gun for protection, opened the door and told the intruder to go away and let them alone or he would shoot him. To this the drunken man replied that he would do a little of that kind of work too and put his hand into his hip pocket. Fearing his own life, Bauman fired, the load of shot taking effect in Garwood's neck and shoulder, almost severing the head from the body. He turned and staggered toward the road, some sixty feet, and fell, dying, it is believed, almost instantly. His comrade in the buggy drove away and has not yet made known his identity, the rig having been found several hours afterward near Wren. Old man Bauman, realizing what he had done, seemed to be completely unnerved and for an hour could not move, then he hastened to the homes of his neighbors, and informing them, asked their advice. They secured Garwood's body and took it to Buchanan's embalming rooms at Willshire, then notified Sheriff Bickford and Coroner Jackson at Van Wert, who arrived about noon Sunday. The coroner's verdict as returned was that Garwood came to his death as the result of a gun shot wound, the gun being fired by Conrad Bauman, in defense of his home and life. Bauman was arrested and placed in jail at Van Wert. He entered a plea of not guilty at his preliminary hearing Monday andhis bond was fixed at $1,000. The remains of Garwood were taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Garwood in Blue Creek township and from the United Brethren church the funeral services were held Monday morning. The sad closing of the young man's life was a terrible shock to his aged parents and friends and came near causing the death of his poor old mother who collapsed from nervousness, brought about by the terrible news. John was a member of company B, and was with them in Cuba. He was a good fellow and a real gentleman when sober and his death has brought the tear to the eyes of many a friend. Bauman and his family are said to bear a rather bad reputation, but still public sentiment is with him, for the murder was committed in defense of his home and the law gives every man the right to protect his family and property. The probabilites are that he will escape punishment, but it is said he is greatly grieved and the thoughts of his deed may blast the last years of his life.
It is a sad happening and there should certainly be a lesson hidden somewhere for every young man.

Rockville, Ind., May 12 - The case of Otto Auman charged with the murder of Clifford Taylor, a Clinton taxi driver convened in the Parke circuit court this morning. Auman is a young man, 19 years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse B. Auman of Clinton and worked in the coal mines. The murder was committed the night of Feb the fifth, Taylor, who was 51 years of age, was hired by Auman, Carl Manford Griffin and William Powell, to drive them to Mecca, to attend a dance, and the next morning Taylor's automobile was found near Clinton and after bloody marks had been found in his car, investigation began for the missing Taxi driver. His body was found in Big Raccoon, the day after the tragedy and marks showed that the body had been thrown over the side of the Armiesburg bridge near Mecca. Griffin was arrested immediately after the body was found, after his sister had remarked to one of her neighbors that her brothers clothes had blood on them. He implicated Auman and Powell and Sheriff Thompson and Deputy Peare went to Clinton and took the three to Terre Haute where they were placed in jail and later Auman and Griffin were brought here. They admitted they had been implicated but charged Powell with shooting Taylor before throwing him in the Creek. They allege the driver was ordered to stop his machine at the top of Hulman Hill and that Griffin and Auman left the car for a few minutes and claim that while they were back of the car two shots were fired and when they rushed to the side of the car they found Taylor had been shot and Powell was holding a smoking revolver in his hand. Powell commanded Auman to drive the car and kept both men covered with the weapon and when they arrived at the Armiesburg bridge Powell took from Taylors pocket a roll of bills and gave each of them $10. Powell denies any charge of the murder, he seems to be a stranger in Clinton, coming there a few weeks before from Linton, where it is reported he has a police record. When arraigned in court this morning young Auman pleaded not guilty to the charge. The case is being tried before special Judge Elwood Hunt and the entire day has been taken up in selecting a jury. Griffins trial is set for Wednesday and Powell's for Friday.
