GRANGER - Clara Artusi, 94, formerly of Mishawaka, passed away on Thursday, September 15 in Arborwood Living Center in Granger with her granddaughter and Hospice worker by her side. Her loved ones take comfort in knowing her soul is finally at peace after battling an extended illness. She often spoke of the day she would meet her Maker and be reunited with those who'd made the journey before her. Clara was born on Nov 7, 1916 in Spencerville, IN as the daughter of Alfons and Stephanie (DeNeve) Neuwlandt. She grew up on a farm on the outskirts of Fort Wayne, IN, along with her three sisters, Anna, Mary and Elsie as well as her two brothers, Walter and Firman. Clara lost her mother at an early age and assumed many adult responsibilities white still just a teenager herself. She counted the family dog as her closet companion during those difficult years. She met and later married Liberto "Lab" Artusi of Mishawaka on August 30, 1941 in New Haven, IN. The couple permanently resettled in Mishawaka after Liberto served his country during World War II. Clara and Lab had two sons, Steve and Jerry. Clara retired from Uniroyal in 1979 after 27 years of employment with the company. Her primary focus in life has always been her family. She cared for her ailing father each and every day during the final years of his life. A devout Catholic, Clara attended Mass every Sunday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka. She was known to say her rosary at least once a day. Clara taught her granddaughters how to pray and gave them the priceless gift of unwavering faith to sustain them through life's challenges. While very proud of her Belgian heritage, she quickly immersed herself in her husband's Italian culture and became an amazing cook. She was an avid Notre Dame Football fan. Clara also liked to watch the Chicago Cubs play on television. She enjoyed fishing with her eldest son and granddaughters in Michigan. Her favorite pastime was reading paperback romance novels and listening to legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra. Clara was beloved by her sons, her grandchildren, their husbands and great-grandchildren, probably more so than she ever knew. She was always ready with a protective hug, a warm smile, loving words, genuine concern, delicious food and an inviting place to stay. Clara will be greatly missed by those who loved her. She was a sweet, precious woman who used her time on Earth wisely. She set an excellent example for us to follow. Her ability to overcome adversity and remain strong was truly inspirational. Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Lab; her son, Jerry; her daughter-in-law, Susan, her parents, Stephanie and Alfons; all her brothers and sisters and countless friends and relatives. She is survived by her son, Steven, and his wife, Sue of Mishawaka; her granddaughter, Stephanie (Jaren) Kilian and their two children, Abby and Aiclan of Mishawaka and her granddaughter, Jennifer (Dave) Haughs and their two children, Sidney and Benjamin of Indianapolis, IN.
Friends and family may visit on Sunday, September 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 19, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. Memorial contributions may be made in Clara's name to the Susan Artusi Scholarship Fund C/O Mishawaka High School, 1202 Lincolnway East, Mishawaka, IN 46544.

Died in Licking Township last week, Mr. Jonathan Clark, late one of the editors of the Zanesville Express. The circumstances attending the sudden decease of Mr-C. are singular and lamentable. A few months since he married into a respectable family in the township of Licking; he was possessed of handsome property and his prospects in life were flattering. Some recent disappointments in his calculations had operated to depress his spirits and on his last visit to this place (the 22d inst) he discovered strong symptoms of hypochondriacal affection and his countenance indicated the deepest dejection and gloom - which was particularly remarked by his acquaintance. He departed from town on the
morning of Wednesday last. On the succeeding day his horse was found alone near the residence of his friends in Licking Township. This circumstance excited alarm and after much search he was found in a deserted cabin, near the road, hanging by a small rope attached to the joints! In his pocket book was found a letter addressed to his wife of which the following is a copy. It exhibits the mental distraction of its unfortunate author. Dear Wife: My situation is such that I cannot
control my circumstances any longer. God in his Providence has seen fit to reduce me to such a state that I cannot get a living in this world. I repent - I sincerely repent for having caused you the pangs which you must feel. O Nancy! forgive me and God will forgive me. I must die - for I cannot get a living. My way is hemmed up. O miserable creature that I am. What have I done that I must come to this? O Lord God forgive me. Thou wilt surely be merciful to me. Nancy! My head is on fire! O forgive me! O God forgive me. I have always endeavoured to get a living but God has seen fit to close up my way. What shall I now do? I cannot write for I can sa nothing to the purpose. O forgive me - and O! will your relations forgive me! Eternally adieu. J. Clark - the fatal instrument of his death (a common plough-line) was purchased in a store
in this place jus previous to his leaving it - the coroner's inquest, summoned to view the body returned a verdict of suicide. Mr. Clark was a native of Worcestor County in Massachusetts, and had resided in this state
several years -- M. Messenger

A Coroner's inquest was held on the body of a woman taken out of the Ohio River near the mouth of Beargrass Creek on Monday last, supposed to have been murdered; having her legs and arms cut or sawed off between the hands and elbows and between the elbow and shoulder - also the legs cut off about the calf and between the knee and hip; the whole of the limbs and body were sewed up in a coarse linen bag, marked with the letters WH and a quantity of stone placed therein to sink it. The Jury returned a verdict of wilful murder. Suspicion resting on a man in this town, he was taken into custody and on investigation, appeared to the court that he was innocent - and was of course discharged. The deceased is supposed to be a woman by the name of Dale, who died and was buried on Saturday last. Supposition is strong that the corpse had been raised for the purpose of dissection; but finding it too far advanced in a state of putrefaction it was placed in the bag and thrown into the river with a hope of concealment. It is much to be regretting that any among us should so far lose sight of the duty they owe society as to be guilty of so flagrant a violation of respect to the dead! However poor in their pecuniary situation in life, or however friendless they may appear, all certainly claim the sacred right of burial and decency forbids an interruption of a corpse in any way calculated to wound the feelings of surviving relations.
We trust that the trustees of the town will take prompt measures to ascertain and bring to punishment any so base as to be guilty of robbing the grave of its sacred deposit.

Died Feb 4th very suddenly at his own residence in Carlisle, Sullivan County, Indiana Doctor Orchard Gould, lately from Bransford, Connecticut, aged 55. Doctor Gould was a graduate at Yale College, Con where he received his degree of bachelor of arts in 1783 and that of master of arts in 1786. He had been a practicing physician for more than 30 years and was one of the first of the first rank in his profession. By his brethren of the faculty, who were acquainted with his real worth, his opinion on any subject connected with his profession was received with avidity, and valued with the of experimental lamentation; while all who enjoyed the benefit of his medical preparation and attention were satisfied that no human instrument could have been more serviceable. By them his death will be long and deeply lamented. Of his original mind and acquired information, nothing more can be said in this brief memorial than that the one was bright, deep, judicious and penetrating while the other was correct, valuable and unusually extensive. As a neighbor and friend, he possessed and exhibited those social virtues which could not fail to endear him to all who enjoyed the blessings which were in separably connected with his character. As a husband he was endowed with every affection qualification that can be desired in the best of companions. As a father, he was mild, indulgent, attentive, cheerful, exemplary - indeed he was more - he was all that reason could ask - he surpassed what reasons could give - but his days are numbered and past; he has gone to that world "from whose bourne no traveler returns." An affectionate wife, and two amiable daughters sensibly mourn his departure but they mourn not as they who are without hope. It is the earnest and sympathetic prayer of the writer of this notice that they may enjoy the presence and support of that God who is the refuge of the righteous in the day of trouble and hereafter meet the redeemed in those heavenly mansions where Archangels around Jehova's praise, through every heavenly street, And lay their highest honor down, Submissive at his feet."
