Mrs. Anna Laura Newman

Indianapolis, May 22 - Mrs. Anna Laura Newman, 73, died at the City Hospital today following a brief illness of pneumonia. To the present generation announcement of her death will excite but little interest but to survivors of the Civil War the news that "Annie Laurie" has passed away will revive tender memories. Though a girl of but 16 when the Civil War broke out, Mrs. Newman volunteered as a nurse and served in the field and hospital throughout the four years of that great conflict. Her services on the field of battle particularly endeared her to soldiers of both the north and south who called her "Annie Laurie. Mrs. Newman also had some thrilling experience as a spy. She on several occasions served in this dangerous role and always gained valuable information. A resident of Lafayette, Ind. for 54 years, Mrs. Newman had only recently come to Indianapolis to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. David C. Adams, 512 North New Jersey street.

Mrs. Martha Pantlind

Mrs. Martha Pantlind, the wife of Henry Pantlind, the driver for Undertaker JC Peltier, was found dead last night at 6 o'clock at her home, 32 Wagner street by her husband when he returned at that time from his work, death being due to asphyxiation caused by the escape of the fumes of natural gas from the stone in the kitchen. Her body was found lying on the floor in the kitchen, near to the door leading into the kitchen. Dr. Barnett, the coroner, was called and his verdict in that death was from asphyxiation. He said the pipe of the stove was stopped up and that the combustion was constantly throwing off a carbon alloxide (?) gas that filled the house. Mrs. Pantlind had been demented for a number of years, laboring under the delusion that she was surrounded by spirits which were talking to her. It is thought that she had been sleeping in an adjoining bed room during the afternoon and, after awakening had stepped out into the kitchen and was overcome by the fumes of the gas. The family dog was found dead lying on the floor of the kitchen. Mrs. Pantlind was 64 years of age. She was born in Ireland and came to the US when she was a child, her parents settling in Akron, Ohio where she was raised. Her marriage occurred at Norwalk, Ohio in 1856 and two years later she and her husband came to Ft. Wayne. All of their children died in youth, the last dying 15 years ago. The funeral of Mrs. Pantland will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Peltier Undertaking rooms, Rev. Dr. Moffat officiating.

Herman Scott

South Bend, Ind., Aug 3 -- The search for William Tucker, age 28, South Bend, alleged to have shot and killed Herman Scott, age 31 of Mishawaka, Saturday night while he waited for Tucker's wife to press his trousers, extended into southwestern Michigan and the Detroit city area today, the St. Joseph sheriff's office revealed. County officers held Harvey Coleman, age 41, Niles, Mich as an accomplice after he confessed to Sheriff Steve Molnar that he lent his shotgun for $20 and drove Tucker to and from the scene of the slaying. Coleman said he drove Tucker to Niles after the shooting where the fugitive boarded a freight train enroute to Detroit. The shooting occurred at the home of Charles Vogel, where Mrs. Tucker was employed as a housekeeper. Coroner TC Goraczewski said that Scott was slain when a blast from a shotgun fired through a screen door struck him in the neck.

Dr. A. L. Scoville

Our own city is, as yet, entirely exempt from cholera, as well as all other diseases, though we can hear of the prevalence of cholera on all sides of us. It has broken out at Boston, Richmond and Centreville, in Wayne County, Ind; at the first named place nearly every case (some 10 of 12) proved fatal. The panic was so great that out of a population of 120 only two families remain in the village. All have fled. The disease at Hanover in Jefferson County, Ind is very malignant and fatal. On the 4th, Dr. A.L. Scoville, who is endeared to many of our citizens by the ties of christian friendship, died; five others are said to have died on the same night. Three deaths are said to have occurred at Columbus, on the railroad below us, on the night of the 4th. We have heard of deaths at Lafayette and various other places in our own State, but our information is not sufficiently tangible for publication. The Madison papers report but few deaths in that city some two or three per day, though we hear by passengers on the cars that the deaths are numerous; they usually say from 10 to 20 and represent the streets as being deserted. Such reports are not credible to any great extent.

John Shew

LaPorte, June 19 - Several weeks ago Fred Kochan, following his return from a wedding trip, suddenly died. The coroner's inquest developed that carbolic acid had been placed in pop which Kochan drank. At another wedding feast John Shew drank poison in liquor and investigation proved he had swallowed strychnine. The police are investigating on the theory that a wholesale plot exists to take life. A woman is believed to figure in the case. Several arrests will probably be made.

Leslie Stanton

INJURIES ARE FATAL TO LAD HIT BY AUTO - Leslie Stanton Dies This Morning at Hospital
Eight-year-old Leslie Stanton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stanton, of Columbia City, died this morning at 7:30 o'clock in the Adams county memorial hospital of injuries received. He was hit by an auto, while riding his bicycle in front of his grandfather's home in Blue Creek township. Young Stanton's death brings the county's traffic toll for the month of August to six. The lad sustained a deep gash through his side and stomach, that nearly disemboweled him. The lad was conscious, but suffering greatly when brought into the hospital about 1 o'clock Monday afternoon by the driver of the car and the boy's grandfather, Fred Bilderback. Attending surgeons and hospital attaches held no hopes for his recovery from the time of his admittance. His condition was critical from the time of the injury. He remained conscious, however, until shortly before death. Coroner Robert Zwick was called to the hospital and immediately opened an investigation of the fatal accident. A formal inquest is to be held later. Details given Deputy Sheriff Leo Gillig Monday, following the crash, indicated that eh driver of the car would be absolved of all blame. The fatal accident happened about one mile west of Willshire, Ohio, in Blue Creek township, as Mr. Byer was returning from a shopping tour in the Ohio town. The efforts of the grandfather to save the lads life went to naught, despite the fact that he used his hands to hold in the lads intestines and stomach. The hash had permitted them to fall outside the stomach walls. The death of the young lad is the latest in undoubtedly the worst period of traffic crashes on the county's highways. Five persons have died and half a score have been injured already this month.
Funeral Thursday
Funeral services for the lad will be held at 1 o'clock (CST) Thursday afternoon at the Willshire M.E. church and burial will be made in the Willshire cemetery. The lad was born March 16, 1930, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stanton at Auburn. He had been making his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bilderback, as had a sister, Dolores and a brother, William. The parents, the maternal grandparents and the brother and sister are the only survivors. His parents now live at Columbia City.

Frances Granville Sutton

The reports of the severity of cholera in Aurora are fully confirmed. We received by the Madison Belle last night, a copy of the Commercial of that town which says that there have been about 100 cases, one third of which have died. We learn, also from a private and reliable source that the disease is confined mainly to about two squares of the town; that about 100 persons resided on those two squares and that one third of them had died. Hundreds had left the town and hardly enough persons in good health were left to take care of the sick. We are told, also that in some instances the disease proved fatal within an hour or two after the first symptoms of attack. Dr. George Sutton, one of their oldest and best physicians had been confined to his room by cholera since Sunday last (note he did not pass from cholera and lived several more years). His little son (Francis) died of cholera on Tuesday. Dr. Sutton's illness at this time is peculiarly unfortunate as he has justly enjoyed the entire confidence of the whole community, to our own knowledge, for a number of years, as a most successful practitioner. The citizens have kept up the burning of coal, tar, sulphur and brimstone night and day, and kept firing cannon through the day. They have also begun to scatter lime in all the damp places and pools of stagnant water. The Commercial says that on yesterday up to 12 o'clock, no new cases had occurred and we sincerely hope that they have passed the worst. There were 11 deaths on Thursday. Perry E. Vermillion

Perry E., son of James Vermillion and wife, west of Argos, died very suddenly, Wednesday evening at the Rochester Hospital where he had been removed for an operation the day before. Mr. Vermillion went to Rochester early last week for a short visit with relatives and was apparently well until Sunday evening when he was taken with severe paints in the side. Tuesday he was removed to the hospital there and that night underwent an operation for appendicitis. About one month ago Mr. Vermillion met with a fall while working on a barn on the farm of JM Wickizer, south of Argus and it is tought the injuries then sustained aggravated the ailment. Perry E. Vermillion was born in this county June 22, 1876 being aged at the time of his death past 31 years. Had always made his home with his parents west of Argos and had a wide acquaintance in this vicinity among younger people who held him a worthy, promising and industrious young man.
