Enroute Home from Shopping - Sheriff Dorsie Likens, who investigated with Deputy James Sims and State Trooper J. M. Arlington, said Mrs. Creager, her two younger sons and the daughter were enroute home from Auburn having spent Saturday afternoon Christmas shopping and getting the family supply of groceries after dining with Mrs. Creager's mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Creager at Auburn. The investigating officers and Dr. Floyd B. Coleman DeKalb county coroner, said Lucy died instantly of a broken neck, multiple facial fractures and a broken left leg. She had undergone surgery after admittance to the hospital. Kathy is suffering severe head injuries and multiple facial lacerations. Mrs. Creager's husband, Duane and another son, Ronald, 11, were at home at the time of the traffic mishap. The 1965 Ford driven by Mrs. Creager and owned by her husband, and the 1959 Ford operated by Lucky, were demolished. Family Fund Started - A fund to aid the Creager family has been started by neighbors and friends. Laverne Creager

Little Two-Year-Old Boy Burned to Death, Laverne Creager play with matches. Son of Roy Creager of Troy Township, Met Horrible Death from Burns Sustained While at Play Monday Evening - The Brother Not able to Tell.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Creager, of Troy township, parents of little Laverne Creager, two years old, have passed through a severe sorrow when they saw their little son die in agony at about two o'clock Tuesday morning, after intense suffering from early Monday evening. When Mr. and Mrs. Creager left the house to do the evening chores they left the two boys, Laverne, two, and Kenneth, three years old, playing together in the house. Mr. Creager was looking toward the house and saw a blaze before a window. He rushed to the house and saw the little son all ablaze. Stripping him from his clothing Mr. Creager severely burned himself, but did all possible to save the life of the little son, and his death followed about eight hours later. When the brother was asked how it happened all he could say, was "matches." It is presumed that the little fellows climbed to the match box and accidently set fire to his clothing. It was a very sad death and one that no one is able to tell just how it happened.

Rawles Marshall Ely

PRR Carpenter Crushed To Death In Freight Lift
A 35-year-old Pennsylvania Railroad carpenter was crushed to death at 7:15 p.m. Thursday on a freight and baggage elevator at the Pennsylvania Railroad Station. The victim is Rawles Marshall Ely, 35, of 2130 Elyella Street. He was practically decapitated, Dr. A. R. Savage, deputy Allen County coroner said following an investigation. Ely was attempting to repair the elevator at the time of the accident. Other railroad employes working nearby said he apparently was lying face down on the floor of the lift with his head extending over an open side looking downward, and watching a cylinder in the elevator pit. He started the elevator from its ground floor level and did not pull his head and shoulders clear when the lift approached the second floor or passenger platform level. His head and shoulders were caught between the elevator floor and the concrete superstructure surrounding the elevator at the trainside passenger platform. There were no witnesses to the accident according to information gathered by Plainclothes Officer John Carpino and Patrol Officers Denton Habecker and Herbert Meyer. The first to suspect an accident were two Railway Express workers, Herbert Long, 2016 ½ Fairfield Avenue, and Clarence Hartman, R.R. 4. They were taking a load of express up a runway when a porter, Edward Dorian, 1210 East Berry Street, informed them they could not use the No. 1 elevator because it was being repaired, according to their account to police. They took the No. 2 elevator to the passenger platform level and noticed that the No. 1 elevator had stopped a foot from the top. They investigated and found Ely's body, then notified their foreman. E. R. Ehrman, R.R. 10, who lowered the elevator to the ground level. William Wood, 1817 Kinsmoor Avenue, a mail handler, said Ely approached him when he first began to work on the elevator and asked where the hydraulic pumps that operated it were located. "I think I will try the lift once more," Wood quoted Ely as saying as Wood pointed out the pumps in the basement.

Albert Habig

Albert Habig Killed When Hit By Shenandoah
Albert Habig, prominent Jackson township farmer and a member of the DeKalb county council, was killed at 12:30 p.m. Saturday when the speeding Shenandoah passenger train on the B. & O. line crashed into his truck at a crossing one and a half miles east of Garrett. Sheriff Frank E. Carpenter and Deputy Sheriff George A. Milks said the 54-year-old farmer was decapitated by the impact. His son, James Habig, 32, miraculously escaped injury. James was riding in the passenger seat in the two and a half ton straight bed rack truck driven by his father. The son resides next door to his father on the Carnahan road four miles south of Auburn. His wife is the former Doris Bowmar of Garrett. The DeKalb county coroner, Dr. R. Perry Reynolds of Garrett, and State Troopers H. E. Austin and Dean Colbart assisted in the investigation. The tragic crash occurred at an unguarded crossing of a county road and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad just north of Custer's Corners on the South Auburn-Garrett road. The father and son were southbound, en route home, when Mr. Habig failed to see the westbound train in time and pulled into the path of the locomotive. The fast mainliner, running an estimated 20 minutes late into Garrett, was traveling about 75 miles an hour, B. & O. officials said. The son told police that his father was driving at about 20 to 25 miles an hour when they approached the crossing. He attempted to stop when he saw the train while the truck was less than 40 feet from the crossing. He applied the brakes and the truck partially loaded, skidded onto the crossing at a low rate of speed.
Struck Cab on Driver's Side - The locomotive struck the cab of the truck just in front of the driver and on the driver's side. The impact sheared off the entire front of the truck, throwing the truck around clear of the track. Mr. Habig's body was tossed from the cab and lay within 10 feet of the truck. The engine, front wheels and front undercarriage of the truck were strewn for 250 feet westward down the railroad right-of-way. The son was not thrown from the truck. Engineer on the train was H. L. Tibbals, 60, of Garrett. The conductor was J. C. Wagner, 56, of Garrett and another Garrett railroader, A. A. Steinmetz, was fireman.
Sixth Traffic Fatality - The death marked the sixth traffic fatality in DeKalb county in 1954. Mr. Habig's death was the first this year involving a train crash and the second traffic death in the county in less than 10 days. Mr. Habig was prominent in DeKalb county Republican circles. He was serving the last year of a four-year term as county councilman and at the May 4 primary was re-nominated without opposition as councilman from the Fourth District. The son reported after the accident that he and his father were en route home from the Auburn Packing plant west of Auburn which they own. The body, removed to the Zimmerman funeral home in Garrett was taken Saturday afternoon to the Dilgard & Cline funeral home in Auburn.
Funeral Services Tuesday - Final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Meese Chapel Methodist church southeast of Auburn. The pastor, the Rev. A. E. Burk of Butler Center, will officiate with burial in Woodlawn cemetery near Auburn. Mr. Habig was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson township. He was born July 31, 1899 son of Phillip and Rosa Habig who reside on the Auburn-Ashley road just north of Auburn. On Dec. 21, 1920, he married Eugenia Berry. Ralph Hickman Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack
Final rites will be held today at 2 p.m. at the McKee funeral home for Ralph M. Hickman, 55, 218 ½ South Randolph street, well known B. & O. employe. Mr. Charles Secrest of the First Church of Christ will officiate and burial will follow in Calvary cemetery. The F. O. Eagles lodge, of which he was a member, held twilight services at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m. Mr. Hickman died Friday shortly before 5 a.m. of a sudden heart attack while working at the B. & O. station in Garrett. Mr. Hickman's death was a shock to his many friends as he had not been ill. Harry Cramer of 410 South Britton street, B. & O. trainmaster, witnessed the entire incident. Mr. Hickman, a B. & O. clerk, was working as relief ticket agent. The B. & O. Washington-Chicago express had pulled into the Garrett station Friday at 4:51 a.m. Hickman was loading baggage and mail from a baggage truck onto the train. Mr. Cramer happened to be watching Hickman from the second floor window of the station. He saw Hickman push the truck from the baggage car to the postal car. Just when Hickman stopped he turned around and then slumped to the ground. Mr. Cramer immediately sensed something was radically wrong and ran downstairs. He called to J. M. Moomaw of 306 ½ South Cowen street, B. & O. yardmaster, who was standing nearby, and they rushed to Hickman's side. Hickman was breathing but could not talk. Cramer instructed Moomaw to call a doctor, ambulance and the fire department resuscitator, Cramer then obtained a stretcher off the train and eased Hickman onto it. By the time the doctor and resuscitator squad arrived Cramer could detect no pulse or breathing from Hickman. The doctor stated Mr. Hickman was dead although the resuscitator squad worked on him from 5 to 5:30 a.m. A coronary occlusion caused the man's death. Mr. Hickman was born Sept. 1, 1905, in Garrett, a son of Arthur K. and Nell Hickman. He hired out as a B. & O. clerk Sept. 21, 1925, and over the years had worked in various locations on the entire B. & O. Chicago sub-division. Charles E. McCullough departed this life Aug. 27, 1909, aged 40 years, 5 months and 8 days. Aug. 13, 1892, he married Miss Zilla Upson and to them were born four children - Chester, Florence, May and Alvin. As to his religious life we will leave him in kinder hands than ours, for God deals with infinite justice and with a love surpassing human kindness. He was a most loyal citizen, weighing public interests before taking private gain. He was a sympathetic neighbor, always hearing the midnight call of suffering and dividing with distress. He was a true friend and loving husband and father. Honesty was the motto of his life and by it he held the many friends through his dealings as a prosperous farmer. He leaves in this land of time a wife, four children, his mother, a sister and two brothers, besides a great host of friends. The funeral services were held at his country home and interment was made in Oakwood cemetery. J. A. Beaton, pastor of the Christian church, officiating.
