Judge James M. Allen

Judge James M. Allen of Terre Haute, who has a large circle of friends in this city, died last evening rather suddenly at his home in Terre Haute. The Terre Haute Express gives the following account of his demise: "Mayor James Montesquieu Allen died at 5 o'clock last evening at his residence, 805 South Fifth Street, Judge Mack and Miss Bessie Allen, daughter of the mayor, being present when he died. He was born in Shelby County, Ky., March 3, 1827, and was in his 65th year. He attended the banquet given by the Loyal Legion at Terre Haute on December 17th, 1891, and has not been well since that time, having taken cold. A week ago last Monday he was able to be out of his residence but on the following day was very ill and had continued to grow worse. Yesterday his physicians gave up hope of prolonging his life many hours by stimulating medicines and stated that he could not live until this morning. At a few minutes before 5 o'clock, Messrs. W. C. Durham and Adolph Gagg left the residence to get a neighbor to attend the dying man in his last hours but before they returned-within ten minutes-he had died. The children who do not reside in Terre Haute had been telegraphed that their father was critically ill. The first to arrive was Mrs. Gott, of Crawfordsville, who was notified at the depot that her father had died. Telegrams were then sent announcing the death. The deceased leaves a family of nine children, all of whom are unmarried except Mrs. Gott. James M. Allen Jr., Mack Allen, the youngest, and Misses Henrietta and Belle Allen lived with their father, Randolph and Miss Anna Allen live in Denver, Colo. Miss Elizabeth Allen is in South Carolina. Miss Emily Allen is attending the conservatory of music in Berlin. The time of the funeral has not yet been decided upon.

Judge Thomas B. Ward

Judge Thomas B. Ward, of Lafayette, died at Plainfield yesterday. His death and the story of his struggle to overcome the drink habit which had fastened its fangs on him is indeed sad and sorrowful. A few months ago he went to Dwight to be treated by Dr. Keeley. He returned home as he believed and his friends firmly hoped thoroughly cured. Weeks passed and he reopened his law office and resumed business. About two weeks ago he became despondent and again fell into his old habits. Again he went to Dwight but was refused admission. On Wednesday he went to Plainfield, but the superintendent refused to treat him. From the doors that were closed against him he went to the hotel and in a few hours passed forever beyond the power of temptation. Judge Ward was a man of fine intellect and most attractive social qualities. He had successfully filled the position of Mayor of this city, city attorney, Judge of the Superior Court, and Congressman from his district. His career, otherwise brilliant and honorable, was clouded by the demon which has claimed its victims by the thousands.

Elmer Whitted

Lafayette, July 17 - Elmer "Bud" Whitted, a well known painter, fell 40' from the roof of Linwood School to the sidewalk below about 11:30 o'clock this morning and died almost instantly from his injuries. He was adjusting a scaffold at the time of the accident and was working in the hot sun. No one witnessed the fall of the 'unfortunate man' but the accident is partly attributed to the heat. Whitted had worked during the morning with Wallace White, but at the time of the accident White was on the inside of the building. Roy Sayler, a small boy who lives on N. 15th street was the first to reach his side. Later Miss Bertha Gunkle was attracted to the scene and she notified the police. The city ambulance was called and removed the body to the Folckemer Undertaking Parlors. Dr. Earl VanReed was called to attend Whitted immediately after the accident but Whitted was dead before his arrival. The unfortunate man's skull was fractured at the base of the brain and his neck was broken.
