Elisabeth A. (Wertz) Boden

MRS. ELISABETH BODEN DIED THIS MORNING. WAS PIONEER RESIDENT OF CITY AND COUNTY. FUNERAL SUNDAY.
After an illness of three weeks, Mrs. Elisabeth A. Boden passed away at her home on South Liberty Street this morning at eleven o'clock. She was taken ill with a cold sometime ago and on account of her feeble health she became worse and neuraligia of the stomach set in. Her stomach became such that she could not eat a thing or take nourishment of any kind. The pain was terrible and death came as a relief. Mrs. Elisabeth Boden was born in Roanoke County, VA, September 30, 1836. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Wertz. Mrs. Boden was married twice and her first husband was George A.J. Stover whom she married June 3, 1852 at Salem, VA. They moved to this county soon after and settled near Murray. On November 29, 1859 Mr. Stover died from injuries received from a kick by a colt. To this union there were four children born, all of which are deceased with the exception of George Stover, Jr. of this city. Mrs. Stover came to this city following the death of her husband. In 1866 she was united in marriage to William Boden, who died the twelfth day of last December. Mrs. Boden bore four children by her second marriage, of whom are Lewis, Mrs. William McConnell of this city, Charles, of Chicago and Mrs. Emma Reed, deceased. Mrs. Boden is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary J. Simons of this city, and Mrs Margaret Mitchell, of Colorado. The funeral will be held at the residence on Liberty Street Sunday. Further arrangements have not been made.

William Boden

WILLIAM BODEN DIED THURSDAY - WAS INMATE OF SOLDIERS HOME AND FUNERAL AT MARION SATURDAY
A telegram from Marion late Thursday afternoon informed relatives here of the death of William Boden, who was a lifelong resident of this city, with the exception of the past year, which was spent at Marion as an inmate of the National Soldiers' Home. The telegram of his death was the first word his relatives here had received to the effect that he was in worse physical condition than usual, although he had been afflicted so terribly for a long time that his death was a matter of no surprise. The deceased was born in Wells County in 1837 and at his death was seventy years of age. He was a plasterer by trade and followed that occupation for years, until physical disability prevented him from working. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 37th Indiana volunteers and served as a faithful soldier until he met with an accident while on duty which disabled him and which in his later years was assigned as the cause of spinal meningitis with which he was so sadly afflicted. While on duty on night in the army he accidentally fell into an old well which was not well covered and he was there for some time before his comrades rescued him. He recovered from the injuries at the time, but an injury to the spine was received which caused his affliction in later years. His trouble had grown worse gradually for fifteen years. Mr. Boden was married before going to war, but was married a second time in 1866 to Miss Elizabeth Wertz in this city. She and three children, Lewis Boden and Mrs. William McConnell of this city, and Charles Boden of Chicago, survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Emma Reed, is dead. The funeral services will be held at the Soldiers' Home at Marion at three o'clock Saturday afternoon and the relatives from here will attend possibly with the exception of the widow, who is sick today and fears she may not be able to go to the funeral. Interment will take place in the Soldiers' Home Cemetery. A committee from the Odd Fellows lodge of this city, of which Mr. Boden had been a member for many years, will attend the services. The lodge has given much care to Mr. Boden in his last years. Mrs. Emma Snyder, a sister of William Boden, resides at Deedsville, Ind, and one brother, James is supposed to be living in South Dakota, but no word has been received from him since he visited here five years ago.

Miss Alta Grove, aged eighteen, passed away at 1:30 o'clock Thursday at her home at Poneto, after a sickness of three months from consumption. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver P. Grove, and her father died a year ago in March with consumption, and her mother passed away three weeks ago from cancer of the face. There are still left to mourn the death of the girl two brothers and three sisters, and they feel only the affliction which has stricken their family during the past few months. Since the death of their father the children had kept up the home and kept the family together, and now the taking of one of the children adds the deepest touch of sorrow to those remaining.

The death of Mr. Daniel Hanna, living a mile south-east of Kingsland, occurred last Monday morning. His lamented death marks the departure of one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Wells County, Indiana. For about three years he had been confined within his home unable to engage in active life, being almost deprived of his sight for a long time. For about ten days he suffered from a severe cold or grippe and just before the dawn of day on the 13th he passed away from earth and entered into the rest prepared for the people of God. The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at Kingsland and his remains were interred in the cemetery at Murray, Rev. Edward Campbell officiating.

In 1843 he married Miss Nancy Law who has ever been a faithful and loving companion. Two years after their marriage they moved from Pennsylvania to Wells County, IN, where they lived until his death. In the year of 1848 he united with the Presbyterian church of Murray, and two years later was elected elder of the church, and was actively engaged in the work there until that church ceased to exist as an organization. He then united with the Kingsland Presbyterian church which he helped to organize and filling the office of elder, has been a faithful member and actively engaged in the work until ill health prevented him from performing the duties which had so long rested upon him. Mr. Hanna, whose life has been marked by noble deeds and earnest endeavors to always perform the duties that came ot him, has won the highest respect and esteem of all who knew him and his death will be mourned by a large circle of friends. Samuel Daniel Roth

Samuel D. Roth, City's Business Dean, Dies; Rites To Be Saturday
Samuel Daniel Roth, whose career in Rensselaer business circles encompassed sixty years to establish him as the dean of present day Rensselaer business men, passed away at Jasper county hospital at eight o'clock Wednesday night. The death of the man who was such a familiar figure in Rensselaer life came in the wake of several years of slowly failing health resulting from a series of complications which required the hospitalization both here and in Lafayette several times. He re-entered the local hospital a few weeks ago but failed to react to medical care and day by day grew weaker. It became obvious last weekend that he could not long survive. Mr. Roth entered into a coma about 4 p.m., yesterday and gradually slept away. Prior to yesterday, he was able to recognize the members of his family much of the time. Mr. Roth was born in Dayton, Tippecanoe county, Ind., December 2, 1875, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Roth. He attended the Dayton schools and his first work years were spent on the farm where he evinced much interest in livestock raising, in which he was to engage in his latter life after many years as co-owner and operator of Roth's Meat market, in Rensselaer. It was in the middle 1890's that Mr. Roth followed his late brother, Milton Roth, to Rensselaer. The latter had come here to take a position as a butcher in the shop of the late J. J. Eigelsbach. A year later Milton Roth and the late Granville Moody, Sr., entered into a butcher shop partnership under the firm name Moody & Roth, with Mr. Roth in active charge. It was then that Samuel Roth came here to assist his brother in conducting the market. Mr. Moody a few years later disposed of his interest in the market to Samuel Roth, after which the business was operated as Roth Brothers Market. Following the death of Milton Roth, the latter's interest was taken over by his brother, and since that time the market has born the firm name Roth and Sons. Although Mr. Roth had been in business retirement of recent years, he remained identified with the city's business circles as part-owner of the market, and thus he retained his position as dean of present day businessmen. After retiring from active association with the meat shop, Mr. Roth served for eight years as Clerk of Jasper Circuit court after which time he went to his farm two miles north of Rensselaer and resumed farming and livestock raising until recent years when he rented his farm and returned to Rensselaer for residence. Mr. Roth was married to Miss Julia Ellis App in a ceremony performed in Clinton county June 7, 1899. Mrs. Roth passed away May 31, 1952. Mr. Roth was a member of Rensselaer Methodist church in which circle he was active for a long period. The immediate survivors are three sons and two daughters, Jay Dee Roth of Miami Beach, Florida, Milton B. Roth of Chicago, Mrs. Geraldine Morgan of Almeda, California, and Malcolm W., Ruth and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Wright of Rensselaer. Also surviving him are eight grandchildren, a sister, Mrs.Ella Bousher of Dayton, and a half-brother, E. C. Roth, of Wichita, Kansas. In the passing of this citizen all residents of Rensselaer as well as those of nearby areas feel a deep personal loss, for Sam Roth was a friend to man, and a man whose character was such as to draw the instant respect and affection of all who knew him. He was wholesome and kind and considerate, a personality whose presence enriched the life of the community in so many ways. To say it simply: he was a good man, there was none finer. The funeral services will be held from Jackson Funeral Chapel at 1:30 o'clock Saturday. The Rev. H. Earl Moore of Dayton, a former Rensselaer Methodist church pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at Weston cemetery. Visitors will be received at the Chapel after 2 o'clock Friday.
