Col. B. W. Oakley

B. W. OAKLEY - His Death on Monday Night - A Sketch of His Life and Character - A Good Man Gone
Our citizens were startled yesterday morning by the report of the death of Col. B. W. Oakley which occurred at his residence on St. Mary's Avenue, at ten minutes after 10 o'clock Monday night. The Colonel has been suffering for months with a severe attack of inflammatory rheumatism to which he has been subject all of his life, but for the past few days his condition had been materially improved, and his death was not expected to occur so soon. An affection of the heart, coupled with his old ailment however, proved too much for his recuperative powers and he was compelled to succumb. Colonel Oakley, at the time of his death, was over sixty-six years of age and has resided in the city of Fort Wayne since 1844, when he moved hither from Michigan. Mr. Oakley has been engaged in the hardware business during his entire residence among us, having been in partnership from the years 18?2 to 1855 with R. Morgan French Esq., and for a number of years past with his son, Col. C. B. Oakley, with whom he was associated at the time of his death. Col. Oakley was a man of strict honor, adhesion to principle, and pleasant and suave manners. He was one of the founders and chief supporters of the Second Presbyterian Church of which he has been a Deacon for many years and in the ranks his loss will be deeply felt. In politics he was an ardent and uncompromising Republican and openly professed his advocacy to the party of freedom in a day when to do so in Fort Wayne meant political and social ostracism. He was one of the earliest anti-slavery men in Indiana and that his services were never properly acknowledged by his party is a matter of regret. Col. Oakley represented the Third ward in the City Council in 1849, 18?0 and 1867, always with credit to himself and ??. In 1867 he moved from the city to his country residence, where he has lived ever since. Col. Oakley was named in the will of the late Mrs. Esther Ewing, as one of the executors, Pliny Hoagland being the other. The will provided that in case of the death or failure to qualify of Messrs. Oakley and Hoagland, they should be replaced by Hon. Jesse ? Williams and O. P. Morgan, Esq. Col. Oakley has discharged his trust in connection with this immense estate with rare fidelity and honor. By honesty, industry and economy, Col. Oakley has amassed a competency and at the time of his death and for several years previous, he was one of the Directors of the Fort Wayne National Bank. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss, and cherish his memory. The funeral will occur on Friday. The hour will be announced in tomorrow's Gazette.

Colonel Chauncey B. Oakley

VOICE OF DEATH - Col. C. B. Oakley - Former Mayor and Veteran Soldier Passed Away Yesterday Morning
Colonel Chauncey B. Oakley died at his home, 903 West Main Street, yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, his life going out in a breath as easily as a child falls to sleep. He has been in failing health for some months, but was able to be up and out to greet his old friends about the city until a week or two ago, when he had another attack of bulbar paralysis which affected his spine. His decline from that time was continuous, and he was prepared for the end. He approached death with the same brave demeanor as when he faced it going into battle in the Civil War. When death came he was surrounded by his wife and her children, together with some Masonic brethren. Colonel Oakley was the son of Benjamin Oakley, and came to Fort Wayne with his parents from New York State, where he was born, in 1844, then being 11 years old. His father was a tin and coppersmith and opened up a shop in the then young village. The business grew while the boy went to school, and gradually absorbed good business training in his father's establishment. As the years flew by, the shop became a hardware store and the owner prospered. Young Oakley was eager for education, and after gaining what the local school could give him, he spent a year at Wabash College. Then the failing health of his father required him to return home and conduct the business. In 1862, at the call for more troops, he could no longer resist his patriotic impulse, and he raised a company for the defense of his country, being elected its captain. His company was assigned to the Eighty-eighth regiment and Captain Oakley served until disabled. The regiment with which Colonel Oakley first saw service was commanded by Colonel Humphrey, of this city. It participated in the battles of Stone River and Perryville. Colonel Oakley's health was never rugged and he was compelled to resign his commission until he could recuperate. After regaining health and strength Captain Oakley heeded another call for troops and helped recruit a company of volunteers for the 139th Indian. He was commissioned first lieutenant and appointed adjutant of the regiment. Later he returned home and assisted in recruiting the 142nd regiment, of which he became lieutenant colonel. It was in this regiment that he was the superior officer of the present Governor Durbin. It was enlisted for the war and was mustered out only when rebellion ceased. On the colonel's return to Fort Wayne he entered again into the business of a hardware merchant and gradually closed it out to become the accountant of the Packard Organ company, with which he remained two years. For a brief time he was engaged in the lumber business in Pennsylvania. Returning to Fort Wayne, he was chief financial man for the J. C. Peters manufacturing concern. Later he became secretary of the Fort Wayne Land and Improvement Company. As long as his health permitted he was frequently called in by business concerns as an accountant, but for the last few years he has not been able to endure the strenuous demands of regular employment. Colonel Oakley was elected from the fifth ward to the city council in 1890, serving two terms. He was then elected, in 1894, as mayor of the city, defeating W. H. Shambaugh, the democratic nominee. His administration was marked as one of law enforcement, and when he was up for re-election two years later, the conditions were ripe for a reunited democratic party in Fort Wayne and he was defeated by Henry P. Sherer. Since then he has held no political office until appointed deputy oil inspector for the county of Allen by his old subordinate, Governor Durbin. Colonel Oakley has been a potent factor in throwing the support of this county to Colonel Durbin in the republican state convention of 1900. When the election resulted in favor of Colonel Durbin and the latter had become governor, Colonel Oakley was a candidate for adjutant general, but in the governor's opinion his strength was not sufficient for that arduous office and it was given to a young Spanish war veteran, General Ward. Colonel Oakley desired to be made custodian of the state house, but that was also beyond his physical powers and another was appointed. Governor Durbin, who had a sincere regard for Colonel Oakley, finally was able to give him the appointment as deputy state supervisor of oils under the new law, the appointment taking effect on January 1, 1903. Colonel Oakley became a member of the Masonic order in 1866, his lodge being the Sol. D. Bayless, and was four times master of his lodge. He took all the thirty-two-degrees of the Scottish Rite and was also a Knight Templar, being a veteran member of the Fort Wayne commandery. He was also a member of the Shrine. His Grand Army connection was with the Anthony Wayne post. His church affiliation was with the Westminster Presbyterian church. The colonel died on the same day as his old friend, David McClure, in Indianapolis. The latter made a request that Colonel Oakley be one of his pall-bearers, but the same dispensation had given him also need of the living arm in the same office.

As a welder, inventor and craftsman, Willard created many pieces of needed materials over the years to fix, operated and improve the required farm equipment. He was available with a helping hand for a neighbor in need. His servant's heart was also evident by his involvement in the harvest fields of the Lord's work. Willard served his Lord at the Emma Church, where he was a member, teaching adult Sunday school, mentoring youth, and serving on committees to help gather in the harvest for God. Willard was known for his chalk drawing of Bible lessons presented in church and mission settings. As an architect and builder, Willard volunteered to be part of mission service trips to Kentucky, Tennessee and Jamaica. Willard was missional minded locally and regionally. He served on the boards of Gospel League in Chicago and Faith Mission of Elkhart. He was active in the Mennonite Disaster Service, Youth for Christ of LaGrange County and Hope Rescue Mission of South Bend. He was instrumental in the formation of Habitat for Humanity of LaGrange County. Willard served as a member on the Westview School Board for 16 years. Being a sports fan, Willard enjoyed supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren from the stands. His road trips on his Honda Gold Wing and his scooter were unforgettable. Willard wanted to ride his scooter to the cemetery, but they wouldn't let him. Willard never met a stranger and because of his quick wit and humor, conversation, then laughter, would most certainly follow. No services are planned at this time. A private burial for family will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Topeka. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be given to Faith Mission of Elkhart, PO Box 1728, Elkhart, IN 46515 or Northeast Indiana Youth for Christ, PO Box 424, Auburn, IN 46706.
