Came Here in Time of Wild Beasts and Forests - Mrs. Margaret Engle, 70 Years a Resident, Passes Away - The Deaths.
After a residence of seventy years in Wayne township, Mrs. Margaret Engle, widow of John Engle, passed away at 2 o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Stanger, 1349 Buchanan street. She was 88 years, 6 months and 22 days old and death resulted from senility. For nearly sixty-eight years Mrs. Engle lived on the Engle farm, situated just south of the county poor farm, which she and her husband purchased upon coming to this county in 1839, when, as she often loved to remark, this region was infested with various wild animals, and much of that now comprising the central portion of the city was forest land. Her husband's death occurred some years ago, but she continued to live on the farm until two years back when she went to the home of her daughter. Up until a year ago she was remarkably active for a woman of her age, but early in last year she began to fail perceptibly and for the past five weeks had been bedfast, totally helpless and able to speak but a word or two. Mrs. Engle was a charter member of St. John's Lutheran church, founded forty-six years ago, and she was always one of its most devoted attendants. Being one of the early settlers in this region, Mrs. Engle's life was most interesting and there was nothing that pleased her greater than to relate to friends gathered about her experiences of the first years in Allen county. Her memory was remarkable and she often told of how fires had to be built around the farm to protect the stock and themselves from the animals that roamed through the forests. She could relate the history of the city step by step and was often consulted as an authority on early day occurrences. Mrs. Engle was born in Elsas, Germany, coming to America in 1826 and first settling in Stark county, Ohio. Then in 1838 she married John Engle and the couple removed to this city purchasing the far property almost immediately upon their arrival. They came to be well known and highly respected all over the county. Surviving Mrs. Engle are six children - Mrs. Sarah Stanger, William Engle, Mrs. Mary Strain and Mrs. Adeline Listenberger of this city, and George Engle of Wayne township, and Alex Engle of Lima. Mrs. Anna Zindrann of this city, is an adopted daughter. John Kiefer of this city is a brother,
and Mrs. Sarah Treu, who preceded her in death three months ago, was a sister.
