Myrna Berry

DIPHTHERIA IS FATAL TO MYRNA BERRY, AGED 12
Myrna Berry, 12-year old daughter and youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Berry of 5 miles south of Garrett in Butler township, died suddenly of a heart attack caused by diphtheria as Sacred Heart hospital Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The girl had been ill only ten days and she entered the hospital Jan. 12. She appeared to be recovering from the contagious disease when suddenly the heart attack struck her. Physicians report that there are four more families in the Butler Center district that have children who are afflicted with the disease. Schools at Butler Center, St. Johns, Five Points and the Hogue school were closed last week in order to allow doctors to administer toxoid to all the school children. It was feared that all of the children had been exposed to the disease as Myrna Berry had ridden in the school bus with them. Dr. R. A. Nason, city health officer, states that no cases have been reported in Garrett. He says that the symptoms of diphtheria are fever and sore throat and that if any children develop these symptoms their parents should call a physician immediately. Children who have received toxoil shots in infancy are in 95 cases out of 100 immune from the disease for life. Myrna was born July 8, 1933, in Butler township and she was a student at the Five Points school. Her parents reside on the Heinzerling farm south of Butler Center. Surviving besides the parents are four brothers, Winfred and Argyl, at home, Alva of Fort Wayne and Lynn, who is expected home from the navy; and one sister, Mrs. George Harter of 2 miles southeast of LaOtto in DeKalb county. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the Geo. W. Iler mortuary in Garrett. The Rev. R. E. Clayton of the Waynedale Methodist church officiated and burial followed in Cedar Chapel cemetery southeast of Garrett. Myrna was a member of the Cedar Chapel Methodist church, where Rev. Jackie Preston Nettles

Jackie Preston Nettles, age 84, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018. Jackie found her church home at Capri Christian Church and became involved in many ministries including Phillips (widows) ministry and grief support She Loved to walk up to someone at church who was sitting by themselves and say, "Are you alone today?" She would then sit next to them and say, "not anymore!" She loved to share the salvation Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone and she would say, "It is not a religion, its' a relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior." She loved connecting people together, so that they could help each other up in their shared trial. Jackie's greatest ministry came when she was recently diagnosed with "small-cell lung carcinoma" and given only a few months to live. She testified to the overwhelming Peace of God that surpasses all understanding. She straight away got busy and visited with family and friends to say her goodbyes. She especially wanted to witness to her friends that didn't know Jesus Christ. Her courage and trust in the Lord's promises was inspirational to all. All that knew her loved her.
