Henry Johnson

STRUCK BY LAKE ERIE - Mr. Johnson Was Democratic Nominee for County Commissioner And Was Well Known
Henry Johnson, of Liberty township, Wells county, Democratic nominee for Commissioner and one of the best known men of his county was struck by a Lake Erie train at Bluffton, at 1:30 Monday afternoon and received injuries from which he died two hours later. When the accident happened, Mr. Johnson was driving west on South street with a big wagon and team of sorrel horses. Just east of the main track at South street and up to the curb line on each side of the street, a string of box cars was backed up so that a view of the main track in either direction was impossible. Evidently Mr. Johnson failed to hear the approach of the train for he drove right across the track almost in front of the engine and when the engine struck his wagon, he was hurled with terrific force under a box car standing nearby. His wagon was smashed to bits. Wheels were stripped free from spokes, showing the terrific force with which he was struck and the wagon and harness was torn free from the horses. They ran for a short distance but were caught and were taken to the Keller livery barn where they were found to be uninjured. Johnson's skull was crushed, one leg broken and he was injured internally. He was forty-eight years old and leaves a wife and four children.
