MAN SMOTHERS IN TANK OF OIL
Coroner Declares Death Result of Accident
TIFFIN, O., July 21 - Byron Buckmaster, 54, Cromer oil worker, was drowned in a tank of crude oil Sunday, in the Cromer oil field north of here.
County Coroner P. T. Perin returned a verdict of suicide after an investigation Sunday, but late today reopened his inquest, when witnesses indicated that they believed Buckmaster died accidentally. His formal verdict was one of accidental death.
Buckmaster climbed to the top of a steel tank on the Ida Rosenberger farm Sunday morning about 11 o'clock. He unscrewed the bulkhead, removed a pipe and toppled in, the coroner said.
Other oil men were summoned by Mrs. Buckmaster, and Harvey Perry and Milton Gibson fished out her husband's body. Officials said Buckmaster had been worried over domestic difficulties and that he had threatened to end his life. Doubt was thrown upon his theory today, however, when witnesses went to Green Springs and asked to make changes in their statements.
The body has been taken to the Ray C. Myers Funeral Home to be prepared for burial. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at the home near Cromer's. The body will then be taken to Payne, Ind. [sic] for interment.
