Yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home of her son, George L. Cates, 315 North 11st street, Mrs. Rebecca Cates, one of the best known pioneers of Wayne county quietly passed away, after suffering several weeks from the effects of severe attacks of intermittent fever which she experienced last June, shortly after arriving in this city for her
annual visit to her sons, George L. Cates and Edwin H. Cates. Mrs. Cates will be laid at rest Sunday at her old home, Williamsburg. The funeral services will be held at the Williamsburg ME Church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev. GH Hill officiating. Mrs. Cates was 85 years of age and born and reared in Willismburg. At the time of her
birth Wayne County was but little more than a wilderness. She led the hearty, wholesome life of a pioneer woman The fact that she lived to such a ripe age is probably due to this fact. Mrs. Cates had hundreds of friends in Richmond, throughout the northern part of this county and in Winchester. She was the widow of Jesse Cates, who immigrated to Wayne county from Tennessee. Mr. Cates died in 1901. He was one of the most prominent residents of this county. He began life as a farmer, but eventually drifted into the banking business. At one time he was
president of the Centerville National Bank and at the time of his death president of the Union National Bank of this city. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Cates made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. D. Clark at Winchester. Mrs. Cates is survived by the following children: George L. Cates, president of the Union National Bank; Edwin H. Cates, cashier of the Union National;
Mrs. Charles Stetson of Richmond and Mrs. W. D. Clark of Winchester.

WILLIAM COBY DIES WHEN RUN DOWN BY TRAIN ON PENNSY
William Coby (sic), aged forty-two years, porter at the Herman Miller Saloon, corner Monroe and Wallace streets, was killed instantly about 10 o'clock last night when he was run down by a cut of cars being switched on the Pennsylvania railroad at the Hanna street crossing. Both arms, his head, and right leg were severed.
According to members of the train crew, Coby went under the crossing gates and was on the center of the track when a flagman standing on the rear of the passenger coach that was being switched, shouted a warning. Coby stopped, and an instant later was crushed lifeless under the wheels.
The dead man came to this city from Garrett several years ago, and had lived with a sister, Mrs. Orla Wyatt, 145 Baltes avenue. He had not been home for three days, she said last night, when notified of his death. Besides his sister in this city, he leaves a father, John Coby, and sister, Mrs. Slendo, of Garrett, and another sister, Mrs. O. W. Robinson, of Lima, O. Mrs. Wyatt said that Coby had been out of work several weeks. Since then he had been employed as a porter at the Baals saloon, 1418 Hanna street, and also at the Muller place.
Coroner E. H. Kruse conducted an investigation last night and the body was removed to the Getz and Cahill undertaking parlors, where it is being held.
The finding of a Moose lodge card in Coby's pocket, belonging to Fred Block, 2231 Gay street, led to some uncertainty last night as to the man's identity,
but a trip to the Block home revealed that he was safe, but had lost his card and dues book.

DECATUR MAN COMMITS SUICIDE
Sherman Major, the proprietor of the First street feed and livery barn, located between Madison and Jefferson streets committed suicide at his home, directly across the street from the barn at 9 o'clock Saturday evening, by swallowing a large dose of strychnine in solution.
Major started in drinking Saturday about eleven o'clock when Marshall Peterson noticed him entering a saloon and spoke to him, Major replying that he'd had "a dark brown taste in his mouth, and intended to get it out." It is said that he continued his drinking throughout the afternoon and about supper time returned to the barn. During several weeks past it is rumored that his domestic life had been anything but happy and this coupled with other troubles may have been the cause of the deed.
After the first convulsion, before the physician's arrived, he regained consciousness and his wife asked him if he were not sorry that he took the drug. He replied, "Yes, I'm sorry now, I wish I hadn't taken it. But it is too late - I'm going to die." He had taken the drug about seven or a little later and died at nine o'clock while under the care of the doctors.
Major was thirty years, nine months and seventeen days old at the time of his death, being born on November sixteenth, 1881, at his father's farm, about a mile south of Wren. Mr. John E. Major, the father of the unfortunate man, is a well to do farmer having a large farm south of Wren, Ohio, where he lived for the past thirty or thirty-five years.
Major leaves a heart-broken wife, Ida Major, three step-children, father and mother, two brothers and three sisters. - Decatur Democrat.
