ANOTHER AGED MAN TAKES CARBOLIC ACID
Stephen Young's Wife Struggles With Him To Prevent Him From Taking His Life
Mrs. Stephen Young, an invalid for four years from te effects of a paralytic stroke, exerted all the force at her command this noon to prevent her aged husband from swallowing the contents of a bottle which contained carbolic acid. She succeeded in preventing him from swallowing the drug in her presence. Stephen Young, bent with age, then hurried to the barn in the rear of the home at ?? Howell street, along the G. R. and I. tracks, west of the city, swallowed two ounces of carbolic acid and dropped to the floor in the agonies of a torturing death.
INFORMED HER SONS
Mrs. Young informed her sons of the scene in her room, and they ran in the barn after their father. They were too late. He had drunk the deadly drug, and was in an unconscious swoon on the barn floor. Messengers were sent for Dr. G. B. Stemen, and he arrived in a few minutes with antidotes, and for half an hour he labored over the unconscious form till death ended the career of the man determined to end his own life.
Stephen Young was 75 [sic] years old and left his home in Germany at the age of six years to live in America. He owned a farm five miles west of Fort Wayne for a number of years. About twenty-one years ago, he went security for a man for $1,500 on a note and he suffered the loss of the money and to save himself from ruin, disposed of his farm and purchased the home on Howell street where he has since resided. He has devoted his time to gardening and doing odd work about. Four years ago his wife was stricken with paralysis and has been almost helpless ever since. This has weighed heavily on his mind, and he has been moody much of the time since. A short time ago he wanted one of his sons to buy a revolver. He said that he wanted to kill rats about the barn. His son then believed that his father was planning to take his own life and prevented the bringing of the revolver into the house.
HAD BEEEN DRINKING
Since then Mr. Young had been intemperate in his habits and at times has been drinking to excess. While in his cups he has discussed self-destruction. This morning he went to the Benton drug store on West Main street in Nebraska [sic], and purchased the two ounce vial of carbolic acid. He brooded over his troubles at home till a few minutes after the noon hour, when he entered his wife's bedroom and attempted to end his life in her presence. Her heroic efforts saved her the pain but did not ultimately prevent him from carrying out his determined plans.
The family is shocked over the tragedy but the unfortunate wife and mother is assisted in bearing her troubles by a family of devoted children. There are seven children in the household. Mrs. Louisa Ryan, one of the daughters, lives at home and has been the head of the household since her mother's illness. The other daughters are Mrs. Anna Desmond and Mrs. Emma Probst. The sons are Edward, John, Amos and Tillman.
For some time the financial affairs of Mr. Stephen Young have been in the hands of Secretary E. W. Cook, of the Citizen's Trust company. The funds in Mr. Cook's hands, as trustee, is money made by the deceased while he was running a thrashing machine in Allen county. He accumulated considerable money at this business after his unfortunate experience in going security on a $1,000 note. He was refused money from this fund to use for intoxicants and his moody condition has been noticed during the last few days. He brooded over the fact that his financial affairs were out of his own hands.
Late this afternoon Coroner Stults was called to the home to view the remains and Klaehn & Melching to prepare the body for interment.
