Joseph Madden

Ash Collector Ends Own Life - Former Contractor, 50 Dies in Garage
The body of Joseph Madden, 50, a former cement contractor, was found suspended from a rope in a garage back of the family residence, 432 East Leith Street about 8:10 pm yesterday by Mrs. Madden and her sister, Mrs. Edith Godfrey, who lives next door. Dr. A. P. Hattendorf, Allen County Coroner, returned a verdict of suicide by handing after an investigation of the case with Plainclothes Officers William Morgan and Walter Davis. Death had occurred about 8 pm Dr. Hattendorf estimated. Relatives reported that Madden had been despondent over unemployment and financial difficulties but had aroused no suspicion that he contemplated suicide. Madden, a former worker in the Pennsylvania Railroad Shops here, had been collecting ashes over the city in recent months with a light truck. He was heard to drive the machine into the garage about 7:45 pm. Members of the family noticed the lights switched off in the building 10 minutes later and when he did not make an appearance, made a search. Officials said it was apparent that Madden had climbed to the roof of the truck and attached a length of thick rope to a rafter and about his throat. He then stepped off the truck. Officers James Smith, Ralph Bubb, Frank Conroy and Arthur Shull found one of the victim's legs on the running board of the truck and the other just touching the floor. The rope was cute and the suicide victim was carried outside where an examination showed him to be dead. The body was taken to Mungovan & Sons Mortuary at the conclusion of the coroner's investigation. Mr. Madden, a lifelong resident of the city, was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and served in the United States Navy during the World War.
