Daniel R. Wisel

Daniel R. Wisel, 101, Last Steuben Civil War Vet Dies; Colorful Career Recalled
Angola, Jan. 2, Death that rode by his side in many skirmishes of the Civil War, but always passed him by tonight claimed Daniel Reed Wisel, 101, one of the most colorful figures in the history of Steuben County. Uncle Dan died at 7 o'clock tonight at the farm home in Salem Township where he had lived for the past 63 years. Death was attributed to influenza. He was the last Civil War veteran of the county. He was born March 9, 1836 in Salem Township. Uncle Dan joined the Thirteenth Ohio Cavalry at Edgerton, O., and served two years until the war's close. His right ear lobe once was grazed by a bullet and a musket ball left a scar on his face which he thereafter covered with a flowing beard. During the war, two horses were shot from beneath him and he was under fire for 28 occasions. Near the close of the war, he was in the Battle of the Wilderness and in the skirmishes about Petersburg and Fredericksburg, Va. Mr. Wisel was reputed to be the first white child born in Salem Township and the second born in Steuben County. In 1838, the veteran with two cousins drove an ox team and covered wagons to California They traveled five months after crossing the Mississippi River. In the west, Mr. Wisel for a time was a gold prospector. In 1860, Uncle Dan cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln and cast his ballot in practically every presidential election since that time. At the close of the Civil War, Mr. Wisel sat on a fence near the famous apple tree under which Grant and Lee were negotiating preliminary terms of surrender. He recalled in later years that he was unable to hear much of the conversation but remembered the historic meeting vividly. At his death, Uncle Dan still cherished the saber and the carbine he carried in the service of the Union Army. He had also among his souvenirs two bullets which had welded together when they struck in midair on the battlefield at the Wilderness Campaign. One of the final public tributes paid the veteran occurred May, 1936, when Pioneer Day was celebrated in Angola. On that day pioneers of the Northwest Territory celebration caravan visited here and joined in the ceremonies when a granite marker was unveiled in Mr. Wisel's honor. Unlce Dan made his home in Salem Township with his daughter, Mrs. Cora Zent. One son, Elmer of Salem Township, one grandchild and five great-grandchildren also survive. His wife died in 1923. His body was removed to the Weicht Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock in Union Chapel near Salem, with Rev. J. E. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Wright Cemetery. Full military services by the Angola post of the American Legion will be held at his graveside.
