Gracie Allen Dies After Heart Attack
58-year-old Comedienne Headliner 34 Years
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD (AP) -Gracie Allen, whose scatterbrained comedy helped make Burns and Allen a top act in show business for 34 years, died Thursday night after a heart attack. She was 58.
Spokesmen for the family said Miss Allen died at 11:15 p.m. and that her husband, comedy actor George Burns was at her side at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.
Contacted at the Burns home in Beverly Hills, William Burns, George's brother, said the popular comedienne had been in seemingly good health before being stricken.
He said she had experienced mild heart attacks in the past. They didn't, however, seem to slow her down much. Ten days ago she and her husband were among guests at the gala wedding reception for Edie Adams, and her new husband, Marty Mills.
She appeared effervescent and cheerful, as she has been since her retirement in 1958. Until then, the strain of sustaining her nitwit role sometimes made her tense and withdrawn.
Miss Allen was born in 1906, the year of the great earthquake in San Francisco. Named Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen, she was one of four daughters of Edward Allen, a song and dance man then booked in San Francisco.
At 3 ½ she had made her stage debut. But she continued in Catholic schools until she was 14, when she began a dancing act with her three older sisters.
Later, she joined an Irish song and dance act and at one time went to secretarial school in Hoboken, N.J. It was in New Jersey that she met George.
Born Nathan Burnbaum in 1896, Burns had been through the vaudeville mill and claims to have weathered 50 partners before encountering Gracie.
She saw him on a hill at Union Hill, N.J. where he was booked as Burns and Lorraine. They met after the show and George revealed he was seeking a new partner. He suggested that Gracie join him.
Gracie recalled later; "Of course George had written this act for himself, with himself as the comedian and I as the straight man. But
the funny thing-my straight lines got the laughs." (Fri. Aug. 28, 1964)

Senator Hartke's Sister Is Killed
NAPOLEON. Ohio (UPI)-Miss Ruth Hartke, 57, Dearborn, Mich., sister of Sen. Vance Hartke, D-Ind. Was killed early today in a two-car collision on U.S. 24 about 13 miles east of here.
Miss Hartke was well-known in Adams county Democrats. She attended the senator's reception at the annual Indiana Democratic Editor's summer meeting at French Lick three weeks ago, and only last week had telephoned Se?? H. Schurger, local coordinator for the Hartke campaign, urging him to attend a meeting last Friday in Indianapolis.
Miss Hartke, who was supervisor of primary education in the Dearborn public schools on the outskirts of Detroit, was on her way back home in preparation for the opening of the fall school term after a trip to Indiana.
She had been active in Sen. Hartke's campaign for pre-election in a second sex-year term in the Senate in recent weeks and had made speeches at party rallies on his behalf.
Henry County Sheriff's officers said they did not know how the accident happened, since there were no witnesses. They said Miss Harken's car collided with one driven by ??? Kahil, 36, ??, Stendhal, Ohio. Kahil was taken to Napoleon Hospital in fair condition.
The accident happened only three miles from the scene of an accident Monday in which five persons were killed in a head-on collision. Miss Hartke had been in Indianapolis during the weekend and was enroute to Dearborn for a breakfast engagement.
A school teacher all her life, Miss Hartke taught in grade school at ?? Ind., family home of the Hartke's northeast of Evansville. Once the senator was in her classes.
Miss Hartke had worked as a volunteer at Hartke's campaign headquarters in Indianapolis during the past summer while schools were on vacation. She helped organize volunteer groups around the states to work on the senator's behalf.
On three occasions, Miss Hartke made public appearances for her brother when he was prevented from carrying out commitments because of conflicts. Twice at Bluffton and English, Ind., she spoke briefly. At Greencastle, Ind., she appeared at a fair.
Hartke's office immediately cancelled his engagements through Thursday. The senator went to the family home at Stendhal to be with his widowed mother, the retired postmaster of the small Pike County town.
Miss Harke was a graduate of Evansville College. She received a masters degree at the University of Michigan and had done advanced study at the Universities of Michigan and Maine, Columbia, Wayne State and Michigan State.
She taught school for 23 years and taught the semester when he was in the second grade at Stendhal. She was a member of the State Education Committee, of Michigan at the time of her death.
The breakfast whew s scheduled to attend was for supervisory personnel of the Dearborn schools. The accident6 happened about 1:15 a.m. EST, only seven miles from the town where Miss Hartke's cousin, the Rev. Waldo Egbert, serves as pastor of St. Austine's Church in Napoleon.
The body was taken to the Walker Funeral Home at Napoleon. It was to be taken to Indiana later today. (Tues. Sept. 1, 1964)

ELMER W. RABER, son of Peter and Anna (Mosiman) Raber, was born March 12, 1892 in Livingston County, Illinois, and departed from this life on April 4, 1948 at his home in Woodburn, Indiana at the age of 56 years and 22 days.
In 1914, he was united in marriage to Pearl Mabel Oyer of Odgen, Iowa. To this union two children were born: Mrs. Opal Brayton of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Mrs. Ola Gerig, of Woodburn, Indiana.
As a young man he accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Defenseless Mennonite Church of which he remained a faithful member until death. He had been in failing health for a number of years; his death, however, came very sudden, and as an unexpected shock to his loved ones and to the community, but we know that what God does is well done.
He leaves to mourn his departure his two daughters, Mrs. Opal Brayton and Mrs. Ola Gerig, of Woodburn, his mother, Mrs. Anna Raber, and one brother, Roy, of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. Esther Oyer and Mrs. Mamie Oyer of Woodburn, and Mrs. Irma Albersmeyer of Fort Wayne and three grandchildren, besides a large group of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his father and two sisters. Bro. Raber met with some real disappointments in life, the greatest of these was undoubtedly the early departure of his companion when his children were yet small. No doubt because of that experience he had many lonely hours in life, and yet apparently he had grace to arise above the circumstances and manifest a cheerful disposition to all with whom he came in contact.
'Sleep on, our loved one, sleep on and take your rest,
Pillow your head upon the dear Savior's breast,
We loved you well, but Jesus loved you best,
So sleep on, dear one, just sleep on, and take your rest,
And since it's only sleep we'll not say goodbye,
For some bright morning we'll meet you in the sky.
With all our loved ones who have gone before,
We'll be with our dear Savior to part never more.'
Funeral services were conducted at the Mennonite church in Woodburn, by the pastor, Rev. E. M. Rocke. (May 15, 1948)
