Last Wednesday night, at the family home, 172 East Berry Street occurred the death of Mrs. Abbott, the wife of Mr. W. T. Abbott, the well-known real estate dealer. William Tobey Abbott

WM. T. ABBOTT IS NO MORE - A pioneer Fort Wayne Businessman Dead
Lived here since 1858, and was once County Auditor - Death follows a brief illness - The Funeral Announcements.
Mr. William T. Abbott is dead. This announcement came as a sad surprise to all of the older class of residents of Fort Wayne Tuesday morning, among whom his friends were numbered by the hundreds. His illness dates back to about five years ago, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. Although he was able to attend to little household duties, he has not enjoyed good health since, but he was confined to his bed but three days. From the time of the sudden change for the worse his condition grew serious very rapidly until yesterday morning at an early hour he passed away at his home, 155 Ewing Street. His wife preceded him some ten years ago, since which time his daughter, Miss Mattie Abbott, has been his constant companion. The other children are Mrs. C. H. Cannon, of Milwaukee, Mrs. C P. Merrill of Farmington, Maine and Mr. Frank H. Abbott of Walla Walla, Washington. Mr. Abbott was born in Farmington, Me., on the second day of May, 1828. He resided in that city until two years after his marriage to Miss Brenda Whittier, when they came to this city, traveling by the old stage coach line. Arriving here in 1858, he decided to locate permanently and went into the dry goods business on Columbia Street and at that time was one of the most prosperous merchants of whom the thriving city could boast. Later he took as a partner in his growing business, Mr. Wade Shoaff. They did a large business up to 1873, when the partnership was dissolved on account of Mr. Abbott's election to the office of County Auditor, on the Democratic ticket. He held the office for four years, at the expiration of which time he engaged in the real estate business with the Messers/A H. Carrier and Julius J. Emo, with whom he was associated until his broken health compelled him to lead a quiet and private life. Mr. Abbott was one of the early members of Trinity Episcopal Church and for years he was a vestryman in the church. The funeral will take place Friday but the exact time will not be known until the absent members of the family have been communicated with.

M. Katherina Abel

Death of Miss Kate M. Abel at Noon Tuesday - She had Suffered Long
About noon today at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Caldwell, 31 West DeWald Street, occurred the death of Miss Kate M. Abel, after an illness dating from last spring. She had been a great sufferer. Her affliction was in the nature of an abdominal tumorous growth, from which there was no hopes of permanent relief. The young lady underwent an operation a few months ago, the attending surgeons at that time being convinced that the end must come soon. While the members of the family were in a measure prepared for the last summons that must remove from their midst a beloved sister, they are none the less overwhelmed with sorrow at the reality. They will have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement, for Miss Abel was a young woman beloved and admired by many. She was for five years prior to her illness, a teacher in the Miner School, where her painstaking efforts in the direction of molding young minds made her esteemed by her pupils as well as her associates in the school. The deceased was an orphan. She was thirty-two years old and was a sister of Mrs. D. H. Caldwell, Mrs. Hattie Gallopin, of Kansas; Miss Mary Abel, principal of the South Wayne School and John Abel, the attorney.

Carl M. Achleman

FIVE-YEAR-OLD BOY IS KILLED
Carl Achleman Dies Almost Instantly when Run Down by Heavy Truck - Was Riding Tricycle
Run down by a heavy truck as he rode his tricycle along the curbing at Crescent Avenue and State Boulevard, Carl Achleman, aged five, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Achleman, 2126 Crescent Avenue, was instantly killed this afternoon. The lad suddenly swerved out into the street as the truck came down Crescent Avenue, its driver, Edward Short, of Auburn, told Dr. Edgar E. Mendenhall, Allen County Coroner, who made a hasty preliminary investigation of the accident. The lad died in his arms as he picked him up, Short told Dr. Mendenhall, but attendants at St. Joseph Hospital said death, caused by a broken neck, occurred shortly after his arrival at the hospital. Short said the truck loaded with heavy iron castings, was proceeding slowly on Crescent Avenue en route to the Wayne Tank and Pump Company but that he was unable to stop it when the lad swerved his tricycle out from the curb line. Miss Louise Meyers, 2118 Crescent Avenue, who witnessed the accident, declared the driver was blameless, because of the lad's sudden action in swerving his tricycle. The body and tricycle was dragged several feet before the truck could be brought to a stop. The truck driven by Short is owned by J. A. Krom, 1205 Orchard Avenue.

Byron Carr

Father of Monroe Man Blast Victim
The father of a Monroe resident was killed in an explosion at his home in Argos early Wednesday morning. Byron Carr, a Citizens Telephone company linesman in the Argos district, was killed by the explosion and his wife, Gladys, was critically injured in the blast. They are the parents of Charles Carr, a resident of Monroe, and an employee of the Citizens company in Decatur. The elder Carr, president of the Argos town board, and his wife were hurled some 75 feet from their bed into a neighbor's yard as the pre-dawn explosion leveled their one-story home which was only recently built. Carr died a short time later in the Parkview hospital in Plymouth, and his wife is listed in critical condition with burns over 30 per cent of her body. About 30 minutes before the explosion, the town marshal and a utility repairman were at the Carr home to check on a complaint of a strange odor. They left, however, after it was thought the Carr's had smelled sewer gas. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the blast Wednesday evening. The explosion ripped off a garage door and tore away siding on the house next door, and also broke windows in houses as much as 500 feet away. (Thurs, Jan. 30, 1964)

Patrick Bouvier Kennedy

Patrick 5th President's Child Lost
Patrick Bouvier Kennedy is the fifth child of a President to die during a term of office. Children of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Calvin Coolidge also died while their fathers were serving as President. The little Kennedy, the second son of President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, was only two days old when he died early today in Boston. The other children who died during a presidential term were older. Two, in fact, were adults. The first was Charles Adams. He was married and 30 years old when he died in 1800, toward the close of his father's second term in office. Mary Jefferson, known as "Marie" and "Polly", also was married when she died in 1804 during the first term of Thomas Jefferson. The Jefferson daughter-Mrs. John Wayles Eppes-was 25 when she died. William Wallace Lincoln was 11 years old when he died at the White House in 1862 during his father's first term. President Calvin Coolidge's 16-year-old son died on July 7, 1924. The boy, Calvin Coolidge, who was not "junior" because his father's full name was John Calvin Coolidge, developed a blister on his toe while playing tennis with his brother on the White House courts. The resulting infection spread, and young Coolidge died of blood poisoning, less than a year after his father had assumed the presidency on Aug. 3, 1923. Of his son's death, Coolidge wrote in his autobiography; "When he went, the power and the glory of the presidency went with him." (Fri. Aug. 9, 1963)

Rites Held For Son Of President - Kennedy Joins First Lady at Hospital After Boston Burial
OTIS AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (UPI)-President Kennedy attended the funeral of his infant son in Boston today, then returned here to be with his grieving wife, Jacqueline. Mrs. Kennedy remained in her hospital room here recuperating from the Caesarean section. She was unable to make the trip to Boston where funeral services were held for Patrick Bouvier Kennedy. The President arrived at the base in a helicopter at 11:36 a.m. (EDT) and rode with Mrs. Kennedy's sister, Princess Lee Radziwill to the hospital. Mrs. Kennedy's stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Auchincloss, their two children and Princess Radziwill followed the President into the hospital. The First Lady saw her son only twice before he died in Boston early Friday.
Graveside Services Brief
The President walked to the side of the tiny white coffin and with his head bowed placed his hand on the top for a moment. After a few seconds, the President followed the other mourners to the waiting cars. The graveside services took less than 10 minutes and the Presidential party then returned to the nearby residence of Richard Cardinal Cushing who said mass in his private chapel. Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York City also attended the mass, according to the White House. He was apparently the only non-family member there, apart from clergymen. Mrs. Kennedy's doctor, John W. Walsh, who delivered the premature infant Wednesday, remained with the First Lady at Otis Air Force Base Hospital while services were being held in Boston. It was understood Dr. Walsh had requested no visitors be with Mrs. Kennedy during that time because of the heavy strain on her Friday when she had a series of callers. Walsh, it was reported, wanted to have time to attend to Mrs. Kennedy's medical needs without visitors nearby. (Sat. Aug. 10, 1963)
