HENRY LANKENAU - Best Known German In Adams County - Soldier and German Teacher For Over 25 Years
Monday morning Henry Lankenau, one of the best known citizens of Decatur, a veteran of the civil war, passed away, had been in failing health
for more than a year during which time he had suffered much from asthma, to which later were added paralysis and heart trouble. Friday evening
the last attack came. At the time his condition became most critical and it was known that the end was not far distant. Mr. Lankenau at
death was still a comparatively young man, being but sixty-seven years of age, but his life had been one of much usefulness. He was the
son of Frank and Catharine Lankenau and was born in Bremen, Germany, September 19, 1843. His father was a shipbuilder there, but a year after
Henry's birth, decided to come to this country, which they did, landing at New Orleans. Later they followed the Mississippi river northward
and finally came to Indiana, settling in Ft. Wayne, where the elder Mr. Lankenau worked at the carpenter trade. Henry was the eldest of the
family of eight children. At the opening of the Civil war he enlisted in the union ranks, early in the summer of 1862. His company was sent
to the front, and saw much active service. During the siege of Atlanta by the federal troops he was taken a prisoner and sent to the Andersonville
prison, where he endured all the hardship and horrors for months, and in other southern prisons. He returned to his home in Fort Wayne broken
in health, and after recuperating took up a printer's life for a few years, and then decided to become a teacher. In 1875, he went to Van Wert
county, Ohio where he taught four years and then returned to Indiana, settling in Adams county. He became teacher here of the St. John's parochial
school in Preble township, where he served faithfully and well for twenty-one years. In this time he became known as one of the most efficient
teachers in northeastern Indiana and many of the prominent men in the township today owe their introduction into the world of education to Mr.
Lankenau's kindly and intelligent instruction. After the close of his service there, he moved to Decatur. For a number of years he served
as probation officer of Adams county. Funeral occurred Tuesday from the Lutheran church.

Joseph Ault, son of John and Elizabeth Ault, was born in Belmont county, Ohio, August 2, 1828, and passed into rest from his home near Spencer,
Ind., October 16, 1910, at the ripe age of 82 years, 2 months and 14 days. He was united in marriage to Bulah Lewis, March 15, 1851, and to
this union one son was born, Esq. J. T. Ault of Jefferson township, this county. Shortly after the birth of this child, the wife and mother died.
April 5, 1855 Mr. Ault was married to Lavina Tipton, who lives to mourn the loss of the husband with which she walked for over 55 years. Ten
children - six sons and four daughters - blessed this union. Two sons and one daughter preceded their father into the other world. Mr. Ault
was a member of the Methodist church of Spencer. Having been for many years afflicted, he found it impossible to take that part in the public
worship the Lord which he desired, but his earnest thought was with the church and Christian people in their effort to build up the kingdom.
He was a tender husband and a loving father and passed to his rest trusting in the Lord. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved
wife and children. He leaves an aged companion, five sons, three daughters, and twenty grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and neighbors
to mourn his departure, but our loss is his eternal gain, so we say the Lord's will be done. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. R.
Ashby, pastor of the Methodist church at Spencer, at the home and interment at the beautiful Riverside cemetery at Spencer.

ASLEEP IN BUGGY; INSTANTLY KILLED
FORT WAYNE, Nov. 10 - Asleep in the buggy in which he was driving home from this city, Ira Bunnell, aged fifteen, a student in the Fort Wayne high school, was instantly killed at 6 o'clock last evening when his conveyance was struck by a north bound car on the Bluffton division of the Fort Wayne & Wabash Valley lines at stop fourteen, seven miles south of here. The buggy in which the boy was riding was demolished, his body was carried and thrown fifty feet from the crossing and was horribly mangled, and the horse was killed.
The youth made his home with his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Winters, a short distance west of the scene of the fatality. The only cause that can be assigned to the accident is that the boy did not hear or see the approaching car and drove into the tracks ignorant of his danger.

LIFE SENTENCE GIVEN RICHER - Murderer of Orphaned Boy Pleads Guilty - Wife is Granted Divorce
FORT WAYNE, Nov. 10 - Entering a plea of guilty to a charge of murder in the second degree, Moses E. Richer, charged with killing his ward, Charlie Coats, was sentenced in the circuit court yesterday morning to life imprisonment in the Michigan City penitentiary and fifteen minutes later his wife, Judith Richer, was granted a divorce from him. Her maiden name, Steiner, was restored to her. Richer will be taken to prison this week.
Before being arraigned, Richer deeded to his wife his farm near Grabill, valued at $10,000, paid off all his debts and arranged that his personal property go to his blood relatives.
The only statement made by Richer was, "I was a man before this happened, and I intend to be one in prison." The remorse that has been with him since committing the crime caused him to break down when taken from jail to court and he wept continually.
Richer took Charlie Coats from an orphan asylum and for some reason did not like him. For some months he abused him, finally, during a fit of rage, kicked and trampled the lad to death. Attorney Samuel L. Morris, employed to defend Richer, caused him to enter the plea yesterday.
