TWO NEGROS KILLED - Mother, Two Children Fatally Hurt In Collision on U.S. No. 30
A two-car collision 500 feet west of the Black & White Service Station on U.S. Highway No. 30 at 9:30 am yesterday claimed the lives of five
persons. The victims, three members of one family were: Mrs. Velma D. Harter, 32, of R. R. No. 5, Fort Wayne, the driver of one car and two
children, Joan Adele, 13 and Richard Lamoine, 15. Robert P. Jackson, 32, colored, of 1325 Horace Street, the driver of the other car involved and a companion, Willey Dupree, 27, colored,
of 1324 ½ Horace Street. They died at the scene of the accident. Burton Max Harter, 9, a son of the accident victim, was reported in
critical condition last night at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The accident, which officials described as one of the worst in the county’s history, occurred a few minutes after a steady rain started
falling. Though no eye-witnesses of the fatal crash could be located by state and county authorities, the collision was temporarily laid to a skid
that caused Jackson to lose control of the high-powered sedan he was driving to a northern Indiana lake. He and Dupree, both employees of
the Schiefer Auto Company of this city, were to paint a lake cottage for one of the company’s salesman, officials learned.
USES THREE AMBULANCES
According to evidence obtained at the scene of the accident, Jackson’s car swerved across the pavement, fouling the eastbound lane of traffic in which Mrs. Harter was driving toward the city.
The impact tossed Jackson from the driver’s seat and he was found dead beside the road. The crumpled body of Dupree was found in the
back seat of the wreckage. One side of the heavy machine had been sheared away when it came to a stop in the center or passing lane of
the national highway. Mrs. Harter and her children were imprisoned in their telescoped automobile, which left the road and came to rest on the berm.
Both the Julian Schone ambulances and another that happened on the scene, brought the injured and the dead to Fort Wayne. Mrs. Harter died at 11:35 am at the Methodist Hospital, according to
Dr. A. R. Savage, Deputy County Coroner, she suffered a crushed chest, fractures of both legs and head injuries. Joan, a student at the
Franklin School died at 9:35 am in an ambulance en route to the hospital and her brother died at 11:15 am at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The
daughter suffered a skull fracture, a leg fracture and chest injuries and her brother a fractured skull and a broken leg. Jackson suffered a crushed chest and a fractured skull, Dr. Savage
reported and the death of Dupree resulted from a crushed chest and fractures of the arm and leg. Besides the husband, Mrs. Harter is survived by the three children,
Burton, Max, Charles Norman and Janet Carol, all at home; the mother, Mrs. Della Growcock of the same address and a half-brother, Arthur Growcock.
Jackson was born in Enterprise, La., and had been a resident of Fort Wayne since he was 14. He was a member of the Westfield Methodist
Church. Surviving besides the wife are two children, Robert Jackson, Jr., and Billy Pearl Jackson; a sister, Beatrice Wilson of Fort Wayne and
the mother, Adella Jackson, also of this city. The body was taken to the Schone Funeral Home where it will remain until 3 pm Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the residence and interment will be in Lindenwood Cemetery. Dupree, whose body was taken to the Micheaux Funeral Home, is
survived by three brothers, Arthur and Paul Dupree of Dublin, Ga., and J. T. Dupree of this city; two sisters, Emma Lou and Mattie
Dupree of Dublin, Ga., and the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dupree also of Dublin, Ga.
