Eli Wagler, 60, R.R. 1, Grabill, died Friday at 6:45 pm. in Parkview Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for five weeks. He had leukemia and had been sick for about six months. Mr. Wagler was a farmer and a bishop in the Amish church. Surviving are his wife, Rosa; three sons, Henry, Camden, Mich., Harvey and John, both of R. R. 1, Grabill; seven daughters, Mrs. Barbara Zehr, R. R. 1, Spencerville, Mrs. Lizzie Lengacher, R. R. 1 Grabill, Mrs. Rosa Lengacher, R. R. 2, Grabill, Mrs. Anna Zehr, R. R. 1, Spencerville, Mrs. Kate Lengacher, R. R. 1, Spencerville, Mrs. Maggie Yoder, R. R. 1, Grabill, and Mrs. Mary Lengacher, R. R. 1, Grabill; 42 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Daniel Wagler Lagootee; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Gingerich, Lagootee. Funeral services will be Monday at 9 a.m. in the Eli Wagler residence, with the Rev. Levi Graber officiating. Burial will be in the Amish Cemetery, R. R. 1, Spencerville. Charles Waldman

Rites for Charles Waldman, 75, who died early Saturday at his home, 3701 Winter Street, following a year's illness, will be held Tuesday at 8:30 am at Mungovan & Sons Funeral Home and at 9 am at St. Peter's Church. Rev. John A. Bapst will be in charge and burial will be in Catholic Cemetery. A native of Reading, Pa., Waldman resided in Fort Wayne since the age of 18. For 42 years, he was employed as a boiler maker for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Waldman is survived by two sons, John and Charles; two daughters, Miss Florence Waldman and Mrs. Henry Fox, all of Fort Wayne and four grandchildren. His wife Mary died in December, 1938. The body may be viewed at the mortuary after 10 am today.

Zeph Walker

WORLD WAR VET DIES SUDDENLY
Zeph Walker, 420 Bass Street, a World War veteran, died at Hartford City Tuesday morning shortly after his removal from an Indianapolis bound interurban car. He had boarded the car in Fort Wayne for the Veteran’s Hospital in Indianapolis, officials were advised. He became seriously ill when the interurban neared Hartford City, and died in the ticket office before he could be moved to a hospital. He was a member of Battery D, Rainbow Division, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The body was brought to Mungovan & Sons Mortuary here. Survivors include the widow, Theresa; seven children, Kenneth, Jeanette, Bud, Evelyn, Vonna, Mary and Flora Rose Walker, all at home; the father, James Walker of the Illinois Road; four brothers, Grover of Zanesville, Joseph, Alva and Carl Walker of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bollinger, Mrs. Bessie Kopp and Mrs. Mary Spangler of Fort Wayne.

FARMER FOUND HANGED IN BARN
North Manchester, May 18 – The body of Charles Walther, 46, was found hanging from a rafter in the barn at his farm home southeast of here early today. The body was discovered by his wife. Coroner Todd Bender of North Manchester is investigating. Walther was a World War veteran and had spent most of his life in this community. He is survived by the widow; one son, Harry J. Walther of near North Manchester; two brothers, Clarence and Glen Walther of near North Manchester and one sister, Mrs. L. E. Hillman of Huntington. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm (CST) at the Bender Funeral Home here with burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Lillian Gail (Osborn) Wamsley

Lillian Gail (Osborn) Wamsley, 84, of Warren, IN. She was born May 2, 1933 to Chester Gleland Osborn and Sylvia Ellen (Sturdevant) Osborn. She died Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, IN. She married Paul Dean Wamsley November 1954; who predeceased her June 1977. Survived by daughter, Deanna Colbert of Naples, Florida; son, Terry Wamsley of Portland, Texas; and grandchildren, Josef Dean, Alexander David and Noelle Dawn Wamsley. William Warren

Wabash, May 14 - The death of William Warren, 62, was caused by a heart attack suffered while he was working on a WPA road project Monday afternoon, according to Coroner Todd Bender. Warren was stricken while working on the Dora Pike east of Wabash. He was a native of Miami County, but had lived in Wabash for 18 years. He is survived by his widow and the following nine children: Lawrence, Edward, John, Orville and William, all of Wabash, Mrs. Gerald Gartner, Mrs. Edgar Perry, Mrs. Charles Friedersdorf and Mrs. Frank Scott, also of Wabash.

CRASH VICTIM’S RITES MONDAY - Noble County Driver Dies of Injuries
Kendallville, May 18 – Funeral services for Dale William Wells, 32, who died early today at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Wells of southwest of this city, of injuries suffered, last night in a truck-automobile collision, will be held Monday at 2 pm at the parents’ home. Rev. A. P. Beale will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Wells was injured when his automobile collided with a light truck occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hampshire of near this city on a country road northeast of here. Complaining only of minor injuries, he was given treatment by physicians and returned to his parent’s home. His condition became worse during the night and he died this morning. Coroner Myron C. Hutchins of this city investigated and said death was caused by concussion of the brain.

Nelson David Zuercher

Zuercher, Nelson David, son of Daniel and Barbara (Sprunger) Zuercher, was born near Berne, Ind., July 10, 1887; died at the Orrville (Ohio) Dunlap Hospital, Sept. 2, 1963; aged 76 y. 1 m. 23 d. On Oct. 3, 1913, he was married to Eva Sommer, who survives. Also surviving are one son (Homer), one grandson, one great-grandson, one sister (Adella-Mrs. Fred Bachman), 3 half brothers (Edward, Calvin, and Elmer), and 2 half sisters (Della-Mrs. Wilbert Bear and Elma-Mrs. Jeff Rouch). Three brothers, 2 half brothers, and 2 sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Kidron Church, where funeral services were held, in charge of Reuben Hofstetter, Isaac Zuercher, Bill Detweiler, and Lester Graybill.

Leonidas, Mich., May 24 – Miss Alvena Ahrndt, 53, a resident of this community all her life, died last night in Sturgis Memorial Hospital following a stroke of paralysis. Miss Ahrndt was a member of the Colon Lutheran Church. Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ahrndt of Leonidas; one sister, Mrs. Vance Sweet of Cleveland, and a brother, Charles Ahrndt of Colon. Huntington, May 20 – Mrs. E. E. Allen has been notified that her grandson, Lieut. Harry Allen of Long Beach, Cal., was killed when struck by an automobile at Seattle, Wash., yesterday. North Manchester, Jan. 20 - John Almack, 85, died at 12:30 pm today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jocie Landis of North Manchester, after an illness of six months. He was a lifelong resident of this community and formerly was a timber cutter. Warsaw, May 29 – M. Irven Andereck, retired railroad worker, died Tuesday night at his home after suffering a stroke of paralysis. Justin E. "Barney" Arata, MD

Justin E. (Barney) Arata, MD, 96 of Fort Wayne, passed away on November 27, 2017. He was born in Mishawaka, IN on October 31, 1921 and was the son of Alphonsus P. and Mary Geneva (Schroeder) Arata. Dr. Arata graduated from St. Monica Elementary School and Mishawaka High School, where he lettered in football. He completed his undergraduate work at Indiana University, in Bloomington, where he was awarded Phi Beta Kappa for scholarship. He then entered Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was class president and earned the Alpha Omega Alpha scholastic award. After completing medical school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. He interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California and then joined the Pacific Fleet as a medical officer. He participated in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini in 1946. After his discharge as a Lieutenant, junior grade, he returned to Fort Wayne where he completed fifteen months of postgraduate education at St. Joseph Hospital. He then moved to Gregory, South Dakota, where he worked as a locum tenens physician in general practice, for nine months. This was followed by his surgical fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He returned to Fort Wayne and joined the surgical practice of Dr. C.G. McEachern. He was called back to military duty during the Korean War and was assigned to the U.S. Air Force as a surgeon, on the island of Bermuda. In 1954, he returned to private surgical practice in Fort Wayne where he continued practicing until his retirement in 1991. Dr. Arata was Board Certified in General Surgery, a member of the Fort Wayne Medical Society and the American College of Surgeons. He and his partner, Dr. Alan Perry, founded the Arata Medical Group as well as the first Health Maintenance Organization in Indiana, Summit Health. Dr. Arata was a past President of the Indiana chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He was a staff member of all three Fort Wayne hospitals and served as President and Director of Medical Education at Parkview Hospital. He was a past board member at Bishop Dwenger High School and was inducted into the Bishop Dwenger Hall of Fame. He served as a team physician for Bishop Dwenger for thirty years. He and his late wife, Mary I. Arata were founding members of the Doctors Mayo Society, a Laureate of the Mayo Alumni Association and a founding member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Arata, along with Dr. Dave Schleuter and Carol Burns, RN, established the organ donation program in Fort Wayne. At one time, the program supplied over fifty percent of all donated kidneys for transplant in the state of Indiana. He was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Arata was a founding member of the St. Vincent de Paul Boy Scout Troop. He volunteered at Matthew 25 Clinic for many years. He and his late wife, Mary I. Arata, funded several bronze sculptures created by Professor Sufi Ahmad, in both Mishawaka and Fort Wayne, and donated to the communities. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Lincoln Post #82 and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Upon his retirement, Dr. Arata was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana. He was also presented the Kentucky Colonel award by the Governor of Kentucky. He was Board Chairman of EMS Summit Circuits in Logansport, Indiana and was involved with several other businesses in Colorado and Wyoming. Dr. Arata was predeceased by his wife of sixty-two years, Mary Imelda Welsch Arata. He is survived by their seven children, Catherine Schlesinger of Charlotte, NC, Nancy Teagarden of Wolcottville, IN, Dr. Michael (Jane) Arata of Fort Wayne, Patrick Arata (DeeAnn) of Fort Wayne, James E. (Maureen) Arata of New Haven, IN, Mimi (Dr. Michael) Conway of Tucson, AZ and John (Jane) Arata of Gahanna, OH, his wife, Patricia Semple Arata, three step-children, fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Adelaide Caleal and Agnes Laux and a brother, Dr. James A. EQUESTRIENNE KILLED IN FALL
Mrs. John D. Archer, 31, Thrown By Horse in Franke Park Mrs. John Douglas Archer, 31, of 3419 Wells Street, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital about 12:15 pm yesterday of an internal injury received when tossed from a horse in Franke Park about 11 am. Death was caused by a ruptured spleen, reported Dr. A. R. Savage, Deputy Allen County Coroner. Mr. and Mrs. Archer were riding through the park on horses obtained from a nearby stable when the latter lost her stirrup. The hose became unmanageable and bolted, throwing Mrs. Archer to the ground before the husband could ride close enough to give aid. Mrs. Archer got to her feet immediately, the husband said, and started brushing her clothing. She warned her husband to retrieve the horse; else it would trot to the barn. When Archer returned, he found his wife unconscious on the ground. She was lifted into an automobile and driven to the hospital, where she regained consciousness for a time. An examination disclosed only minor bruises and abrasions. Mrs. Archer became unconscious again at the hospital and died. Mrs. Archer, secretary and active in affairs of the Parent-Teachers Association of the Lincoln School, attended South Side High School and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and the Women’s Guild of the church. Surviving besides the husband are two sons, Billy and John Frederick, both at home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Reed of R. R. No. 4, Fort Wayne and a brother, Elmer E. Reed, also of that address. Among the surviving cousins are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ash of Fort Wayne. The body was removed to the Getz & Cahill Funeral Home where it may be viewed after 7 pm today. Services will be held there at 2 pm Wednesday with the Venerable James McNeal Wheatley, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating and interment will be in Lindenwood Cemetery.

Huntington, May 20 – Henry Arnold, 59, native of Huntington who lived here until about 20 years ago, died yesterday in a Cleveland hospital following an operation. His mother, Mrs. Jacob Arnold and sister, Miss Mary, of this city have left for Cleveland where funeral services and burial will be held. He was a building contractor there. Before leaving Huntington, he was employed at the Reichenbaugh-Wickenhelser store. Surviving are the widow, a daughter, the mother, three brothers, Herman Arnold, Fort Wayne, George Arnold, Cleveland, and Joseph Arnold, Chicago and three sisters, Mrs. Cecelia Schilling, Fort Wayne, Mrs. James Fosselman, Cleveland and Miss Mary.

Napoleon, O., May 23 – Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm at the Wesche Funeral Home here for Charles Welton Augenstein, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Augenstein of this city, who was drowned in the Maumee River near here when a boat caught fire. Five other occupants of the small craft were saved by two men who witnessed the accident from the shore and swam to their assistance. Dr. J. A. Born in Escanaba, Michigan, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Henry Carr and Adelle Parks. Phyllis was the owner and operator of Three Generations Unlimited for 30 years prior to her retirement in 2015. Phyllis was full of energy and had a "Do Not Give Up Attitude." Her sassy and spunky sense of humor will be missed. She cherished making memories with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joseph Ward Barney, 83, died Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Joe was born in Fort Wayne, to the late Lewis Joseph Barney and Marie (Kraner) Barney. He was drafted in the Army in 1957. Joe was a service writer for C&P Machine for over 20 years and a member of the South West Conservation Club. Joe enjoyed spending his time at Pawster Park with his dog, Annie. Funeral services for Charles G. Barbara A. (VanHoozen) Becker

Barbara A. Becker returned to her Heavenly Father November 12, 2017. She was born on October 26, 1934, in the living room of the home her grandfather built in Aboite Township. She was the daughter of Doris and Margaret (McMaken) VanHoozen, who preceded her in death. She grew up on a forty-acre family farm with her younger sister Joyce (Ken) Offord and brother, Richard (Debbie) VanHoozen, who both survive her. She graduated from Jefferson Center High School, where she was senior class president. She then worked at Western Union where she met Joseph C. Becker. They were wed on October 9, 1954, and were married 53 years before Joe's death in 2007. Together they raised six children, Michael (Ellen) Becker of Fort Wayne, Kevin (Karen) Becker of Oxford, IN, Mark (Christi) Becker of Chelsea, MI, Doris (Mark) Biddle and Robert (Heather) Becker, both of Noblesville, IN, and Patricia (Joe) Bond of Fort Wayne, all of whom survive her. As the children got older, Barb worked at GTE, where she spent many years until her retirement. She was a charter member of Saint Henry's Parish and was a member of St. Charles Parish in her later years. She had a zeal for life, lived her faith, and loved her family and friends. She was always thankful for her blessings. She was a gift to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. In addition to her children and siblings, Barbara is survived by 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two grandchildren preceded her in death. CRASH VICTIM’S RITES ARRANGED - Woman Fatally Hurt in Wreck near Avilla
Kendallville, May 27 - Funeral services for Mrs. Letha Boszor, 50, this city, who died at 7:15 am today at Lakeside Hospital here of injuries received last night in an automobile collision near Avilla, will be held Wednesday at 2 pm (CDT) at the residence and at 2:30 pm at the Evangelical Church here. Rev. Ambrose Aegerter will officiate and burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Mrs. Boszor suffered a skull fracture and other injuries when the car driven by her husband, Claude Boszor, 50, collided with an auto driven by Carl Engle, 54 of near Avilla on State Road No. 3, a mile and half south of that town. Boszor suffered fractures of several ribs and was reported in critical condition tonight at the hospital. Their son, Paul, 22 and Miss Dorothy Young, 18, of this city, other occupants of the Boszor auto, are at the hospital with less serious injuries. Engle escaped unhurt. Myron C. Hutchins of this city, Noble County Coroner and State Police Officer William Hunter are investigating the accident. Surviving Mrs. Boszor are her husband, the son, two daughters, one sister and one brother.

Paul Bouza

Paul Bouza passed away Friday, November 24, 2017 at Eagle Valley Meadows in Indianapolis. Paul Alan Bouza, 64, passed away on Friday November 24, 2017. He was born on February 20, 1953 in Talcahuano, Chile, to the late Manuel and Elsie Bouza. He was preceded in death by his brother Douglas. Paul spent his early childhood in Chile; completing his formative years in the Detroit, Michigan area. Paul was an All-State Guard and Defensive End for the North Farmington Raiders, who went undefeated in 1970 and won the Michigan High School Football Championship. He completed his education with degrees from Lawrence Tech and the University of Detroit. His career in finance put him to work at companies such as Microdot, Zanxx, Kendall & Davis, AmerCan, and BRC Rubber and Plastics, where he retired from his role as Chief Financial Officer. He was a long time member, Paul Harris fellow, and President of the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club. He travelled across the globe to assist with community outreach programs with the club. He enjoyed golf, acoustic guitar, and spending time with his family. Survivors include his ex-wife of 32 years and dear friend Karin (Forish) Bouza; son, Chris (Beth Mastee); daughter Lindsey (Carolina Procter); brothers, John and Richard; and sister, Marilyn; and grandson, Leo. Mason Bowen

Hicksville, O., May 26 - Mason Bowen, 90, died today at his home here after a long illness. He was born at Fort Wayne and spent his early life near Leo, coming to this community 60 years ago. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Martha DePew Bowen; two sons, William Bowen of Hicksville and John Bowen of Garrett, and one daughter, Mrs. Ida Grace of Saginaw, Mich. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 pm at the Perkins & Reeb Funeral Home here with Rev. Joseph Ferguson of Auburn officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery here.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Bronxville, N.Y. for Robert A. Bradley, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Studer of 650 West Third Street, who died last Friday at his home. Survivors include the grandparents; the mother, Mrs. Mabel D. Bradley of Bronxville and a sister, Miss Alice Bradley, at home.

Charles Brown

Charles Brown, 78, died at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday morning at the home of a son, Gilbert F. Brown of 1603 Alabama Avenue. Born in Ireland, he came to Chicago at the age of 16, and had resided here the last three years. Survivors include the son; two brothers, Gilbert and William Brown of Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Shea of Chicago. He was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Chicago. The body was taken to Mungovan & Sons Mortuary and was sent to Chicago last night for burial.

Everett Lloyd Brown

Everett Lloyd Brown ("Brownie") 86, of Fort Wayne and previously of The Villages, FL and Payne, OH, passed away on December 5, 2017. Everett was born on May 15, 1931 in Monroeville, IN to the late Nellie Baker Brown Beezley and Lawrence Brown. Everett retired from the Air Force in 1972 after serving for 20 years as a meteorologist. He continued his work as a meteorologist with the Civil Service at Fort Wayne International Airport until retiring in 1986. He had always enjoyed a good game of euchre, having played in August with his grandson and sons. He still used his computer daily for email and keeping financial spreadsheets. Everett's survivors include his children, Larry (Joni) Brown of Fort Wayne, Kevin Brown of Indianapolis, Karen (Steve) Elliott of St. Augustine FL, and Doug (Kaori) Brown of Kailua Hawaii; grandchildren, Amanda (Andrew) Riebe and Jae-Sun Brown; great grandchildren, Mae and Walter Riebe, and sister, Rita Adam of Convoy, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Salway) Brown in 2014. Per Everett's wishes, no formal services will be held. Preferred memorials to donor's choice.

Norma Jean (Smith) Brunson

Norma Jean Brunson, 96, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Miller's Merry Manor in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born in Garrett, IN, to the late Walter Arthur Sr., and Martha Catherine Smith, Norma graduated from Garrett HS in 1939. She was the owner and operated the Silhouette Beauty Salon in Kendallville for many years. Surviving are her son, Michael Brent (Debbie) Brunson of Plano, TX; sister, Frances Dickinson of Fort Wayne, IN; granddaughter, Angela (Allen) Freeman grandson, Brent (Tempest) Brunson and greatgrandchildren, Douglas and Evan . Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William E Brunson, and her brother, Walter Smith Jr. Service is 1:30 pm, Saturday December 16, 2017 at D. O. Clarence Buntin

KILLED WHILE ASLEEP IN HIS BUGGY
FRANKFORT, Ind., Sept. 23 - Asleep in his buggy, Clarence Buntin, 17 years old, was killed by a Monon train today at a crossing near his home at Kirklin. Buntin was returning from a call on his fiancee, Miss Wallace, at Circleville. (This recalls an identical accident that occurred to young George Durr about fifteen years ago, who was killed by a train 2 1/2 miles north of Berne one Sunday night, while returning home from his lady friend).

Clyde Burres

Word was received here yesterday of the death of Clyde Burres, a relative of John S. Burres of 3126 South Lafayette Street, at his home at Farmland. The deceased was a retired mail carrier. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock at Farmland, with burial there.

Stephan Craig Burton

Stephan Craig "Steve" Burton, 75, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Steve was the son of the late Clyde and Marie (Calcoff) Burton. Steve graduated from South Side High School, class of 1961 where he was active in basketball, football, and track. During the summers he played baseball where he competed in the Pony League World Series in Williamsburg, PA in 1957. Steve was a 3rd generation City of Fort Wayne Police Officer where he served for 28 years. Following his service at FWPD he was a police officer at IPFW for 18 years. He had been a current employee at Citizens Square in Fort Wayne. He was a 50 year member of FOP Lodge #14, South Side Alumni, and a lifetime supporter of the Fort Wayne PAL Club. Steve played softball and basketball on the FWPD teams. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on Purdue and the Colts. He also enjoyed taking care of his yard and his cars. He loved his family and enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren's school activities. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Jane Burton; sons, Jeff (Amy) Burton, Tim (Chanel) Burton, Andy Burton; grandchildren, Reed, Ryan, Reese, Marce, Molly, Jake, Chase, and Natalie; sister, Susan (Greg) Topper; brother, Brian (Amie) Burton; and sister-in-law Linda Bloom. Service is 2:00 pm, Wednesday November 22, 2017 at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road with calling from 10:00 am until the service.
