CALAWAY, Thelma L. Morocco is mourning the loss
of civic and church leader, social news correspondent and friend Thelma L.
Calaway, who died Saturday afternoon, February 18, 1984, at the age of 70
following an extended illness.
Mrs. Calaway had been a member of various organizations
since she came to Morocco in 1944 with her husband, John, a former longtime
Morocco Town Board member who preceded her in death in 1982. She was a
charter member of Morocco’s Projects Unlimited, an organization that raises funds
for various community improvements and programs. She also was a member of
the Morocco Garden Club, Enos Bunco club and the Newton County Republican
Women’s Club. Morocco Community Productions, a group that presents
musical or dramatic programs annually, also counted her among their
membership. Mrs. Calaway also was involved in various activities
throughout the years at the United Church of Morocco, and she had served in the
past as a deaconess.
But, perhaps she was best known as the author of the
“Morocco Locals’ column, a duty she had performed since practically her first
days as an employee of the Morocco Courier. Mrs. Calaway was hired by the
former operators of the newspaper, Lee and the late Vern Ellis, about 27 years
ago. In the nearly 20 years that Ellis worked with her, she said they
“never had one cross word.” At the beginning, Mrs. Calaway had several
other duties besides the “Morocco Locals’ column, including answering the
telephone, waiting on customers, doing general office work and helping at times
to fold the papers after they came off the press. Mrs. Ellis recalled
that they “always had such a good time together,” and she noted that Mrs.
Calaway was “certainly a good worker for us.”
When the Morocco Courier was purchased in 1976 by Keith
Robinson, then owner of the Rensselaer Republican and other area newspapers,
Mrs. Calaway continued her duties as writer of the “locals.” Sometime during
her years at the newspaper, she also began gathering Mount Ayr news.
Mrs. Calaway only announced her retirement as correspondent
for the Morocco Courier, which is now owned by Dear Publications, Inc., last
week. As yet, a new “Morocco Locals” author has not been named, but Donna
LaCosse has taken over the Mount Ayr correspondent duties.
Mrs. Calaway, who lived at 326 W. State, died at 1:10 p.m.
Saturday at George Ade Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 14, 1914 in Anderson,
she was the daughter of Horace and Medora Ray Reason. She married
