Sell Cemetery

The Sell Cemetery is located in Washington Township, Newton County, Indiana, on CR 50W between State Road 16 and CR1 000 S. It lies southwest of Brook.

In 1888 Daniel W Sell donated ground to a newly formed congregation of Pennsylvania Dutch families so they could build a church, which they called the St. Paul German Reformed Church. In 1925 the congregation disbanded and the property reverted back to the Sell family. Adjacent to the church was the Sell Cemetery.

In 1984 twenty two people were found buried under 19 headstones of which 16 were legible. The earliest burial that can be read was that of Mary B Sell, daughter of M.P. and A.C. Sell, who died Nov. 2, 1878. The last burial was that of Susan S Sell (1836-1917).

Daniel Sell (b. 1827) and his wife, Susan, were natives of Pennsylvania, and resided nearby until 1876 when they moved to a farm north of Kentland and later continued operation of the farm in Washington Township.

They were the parents of Edward, Anna, Ella, Webster, and John. Their farm has been owned and operated by the sell family for more than 100 years.

The cemetery is located in section twenty three (23). To reach the cemetery from US Highway 41, take State Road 16 east towards Brook. Turn south (right) onto CR 50W. The cemetery is located about one half (1/2) mile south on the right side of the road.
