Groves - Jessie

What a lady!  Jessie was born in Fountain County 6 Feb 1894 the daughter of William H and Charlotte Grenard Groves, her father coming with his parents to MoCo at age 17 from his birth place in Fleming County, Kentucky.  Jessie was an only child and her parents encouraged her to do what she desired.

It was nursing – all the way.  She did nurses’ training at the old Culver Union Hospital in Crawfordsville, Indiana (IU Archives) and when but 19 moved to Indianapolis alone where she held a position as Night Supervisor at Long Hospital where the IU School of Medicine was just beginning.  Still at Long, two years later she became the Operating Room Supervisor.  At one point, she was supervisor of the Health Facility at Martinsville Sanitorium and later had the position of Operating Supervisor at Riley Hospital.  From there During her career, she was active in the Indiana State Nurses’ Association serving on various committees and offices, spending several years as treasurer.  More than once she was a featured speaker, one of her specialties the Red Cross.  She went to Indianapolis where she remained until retirement in 1950 after being a witness in the trial of Walter Runyan for killing Arlie Stull.  A fluke in the system let Walter off the hook but for quite a long time it was the talk of the county.

Jessie spent 30 years at the IU Med Center.  She passed at age 100 and 1 week, being buried with her parents at Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, her name on their stone as well.  Rest in Peace, dear Jessie and whatever the deal was with Arlie Stull and Walter Runyan you gave your all nursing others!
