West Point – John Raymond “Zach” Zachary, 82, a retired streetcar motorman and bus driver, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday in Home Hospital. He had been in failing health seven years. Mr. Zachary resided at Rt 1, West Point. Born at Ladoga, he moved to Tippecanoe County as a child. He went to work in 1915 as a motorman for the old Lafayette Railway and Street Co. and continued as a bus driver for Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corp until retiring in 1958. In 1942 he was married to Helen Sipos Petway who survives. He was a Marine Corps veteran of WWI, having served in France and in 1941 he was appointed honorary recruiting officer for the Marine Reserves. He was a member of the National Guard, Battery C, 150th Field Artillery and after his medical discharge, he entered the Navy Seabees. Mr. Zachary was a member of West Point United Methodist Church, past commander and life member of the Marine Corps League and a past commander of VFW Post 1154. He also was a former member of the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving with the widow are a son, Gordon Zachary of Lafayette and two stepdaughters, Mrs. William (Patricia) Speaker of Maine and Mrs. Leslie (Carol) Howey of Rt 1, West Point. - kbz
