Kingman - James Carroll Yater, 76 of Kingman died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday September 9, 1998 at Home Hospital, Lafayette. He was a former resident of Grange Corner of Rockville. He was born Dec 9, 1921 in Fountain County, the son of Bervie Merrell and Golda "Goldie" LaRue Cain Yater. He married Ruthann Thomas on June 6, 1947. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert D (Gilberta) Yater of Elwood, Neb and JB (Joyce) Yater of Kingman; two daughters, Mrs. Leroy (Teresa L) Blakenbeckler of Veeersburg and Mrs. Joseph (Nancy A ) Shoemaker of Waynetown; four brothers; Morris Cliston Yater of Poland, Ind; Vernon Glenwood Yater of Yeomen, Ind; Hershell D "Bud" Yater, Darlington, Ind and Gerald P. Yater of Greencastle; a sister, Mrs. Mary Alice Leaman of Lafayette; 9 grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren, 8 great granchildren and six step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 grandsons, Bradley Yater, James R. Shoemaker and David L. Shoemaker; two brothers, Eldon & Lloyd Yater and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Larestn. He attended Marshall HS and was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. He had been an auto mechanic owner of JC Yater & Son Garage in Kingman. He was a member of C'ville America Legion; life member of C'ville VFW and life member of Midwest Chapter #3 Ranger Batllion Association. Funeral services at 2 p.m Sunday Sept 13 at Shoemaker Funeral Home, Waynetown. Officiating is Rev Kenneth Majors & Rev Timothy Yater; visitiaton 4-8 p.m. Sat Sept 12 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Wallace with graveside military honors by the Crawfordsville VFW and American Legion; Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 2901 Ohio Blvd, Suite 153, Terre Haute, Ind 47807 or Wolf Creek Cemetery, in care of Shoemaker Funeral Home, Waynetown.
